Low Vin 240z, is this a good thing?
Cool thing on the new floors/rockers. Rust and floor jack contact damage in there.

Low Vin 240z, is this a good thing?
Wish I could do a restoration in a couple of months. 2 1/2 years in so far and I still need about another year!

Fuel tank removal
POR'd version sanded down and painted with one coat. Very high mileage car had very good looking tank on the inside. Outside pant was flaking off. Gallery Link Gallery Link

Distributor Waveforms - Bench Testing
Amazing fun you can have with an oscilloscope. $10,000 scopes I used in college can be found on eBay for $120 now. Thanks for posting! I scoped a rough running 84 Vanagon (which uses the same injection as a a 280ZX) and when I clipped to the injectors it was a square wave 85% on 15% off which was obviously a flooding condition. Tracked the problem to a grounded O2 sensor.

Best ZCar Ad Ever?
OMG - I love my classic Z, but it may be time to look at a new one...

does this look bad?
I had dust covers on a set of ball joints fail in 4 years with maybe 2000 miles put on the car as the car was just being driven occasionally at that point. After market dust covers are bunk most of the time.

What should I do with my father in law's Z?
Agree that this is a great car to have fun with. Any idea why the rear interior panels are tan and the vinyl is white? The drivers side floor pan and floor rail will need to be replaced. Sounds like major surgery, but isn't on your car since only portions of metal need to be cut and welded, not the whole pan.

Z cars at the Concours
Hey Carl, what is the tube sticking out of the lower fender behind the front left wheel of your BRE rally car?
-
Por- 15 amount
I usually don't counter Carl, but about 1.5 - 2.0 oz's of a 4 oz can will do the outside of the gas tank. Top coating is optional since it won't be getting much UV.

Grommet for Mustache Bar
BB45 was the part number, but I could only find it on eBay. Think it was a 40mm hole so I used a 1 1/2 inch inner diameter plug. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Pack-5-Rubber-Grommets-Hole-Plugs-BB45-/120791678873?pt=Vintage_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&vxp=mtr&hash=item1c1fbebf99 Got some photos in my Gallery (he said opening a beer)...

Grommet for Mustache Bar
What are people using for grommets over the access hole for the mustache bar mount bolts? I put some time googling and came up with this. Works okay though the rubber in the center is very thin. I couldn't remember if there was even a grommet there originally. This is the bolt it is covering....

Hmmm what I did today. Well got into a nice fender bender :(
The vertical section on the inside of the headlight bucket will be bent down. That's a PITA to straighten up. If you had the bumper on, likely both sides would be bent down.

Rear stub axle just broke when tried to torque nut?
It's just what I do... Take something apart and go WTF! How did THAT happen? Larger View

Rear stub axle just broke when tried to torque nut?
Too blury to tell, but doesn't look like it has the flat nut peening area at the end of the threads which makes me think its a replacement stub axle, not the original. One possibility is the mechanic that replaced the stub axle put 500 ft lbs on the nut.

Datsun brand in 2014
WSJ picked up the article too. Probably best coverage I've read http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052970203753704577257002790582924.html?mod=googlenews_wsj

Just an old logo for the news story, I can't find any reference to a car or a logo/badging as of yet.

Datsun brand in 2014
A bit of googling... http://www.thedetroitbureau.com/2012/03/nissan-readying-return-of-datsun-brand-in-2014/ My take is a bit more confusing marketing from Nissan. Datsun reintroduction in the US would be a good counter to the Scion FR-S. Instead it goes to the ultra low market...

Datsun brand in 2014
Got an email from a colleague in Tokyo stating that the top page of today's Nikkei Newspaper, it said, "Nissan to restart Datsun brand starting 2014" - 800 - 1000cc mainly - Initial price target of less than US$6,250 (@JPY80/US$) - Initial target market is India, Russia, and Indonesia Indeed... http://e.nikkei.com/e/fr/freetop.aspx

Steel thickness difference for 240z and 280z
I bought a fender for my '72 from Nissan. The parts guy at Courtesy mentioned it was the same part number for 240Z-280Z.

Just picked up 15793 12/70 yesterday.
Looks like a great find. The seat covers are JC Whitney catalog parts from the mid 80's.

Typical Cost of a Repaint 1978 280Z
The Glasurit 55 paint and Glamour Clear clearcoat shot on my car cost about $3500, no labor - so costs can get out of hand quickly. Even the buildup primers used in block sanding are crazy expensive...

Brakes: Restored! Not just rebuilt...
Eric, my local plating shop north of Austin demands the parts be sand blasted prior to plating. Haven't done any parts with machined surfaces yet (like calipers). I guess the shop doesn't have a tumbler. Obviously blasting the machined surfaces is right out. Blasting the calipers assembled might be an option and just figure on replacing the pistons and seals. Any advice on surface prep prior to plating? Agree with the warning about relationship and bank account damage.

Nice original owner '72 survivor on Ebay with no reserve
Think the 12K price is about right if it doesn't have the rust monster. Since it does, its just an average example. I was in a biz meeting in Japan and showed some rotisserie shots of my Z. One guy who didn't speak much English said very slowly... "No no... Not Datsun 240Z, DahTuSan Fairlady Zed!" Cracked me up
