WTB: Close ratio 5 sp trans and Engine Belly Pan
None are stock.....all are modified L28’s.....HP varies from 190 at the flywheel to 250 (Stroker). Only thrash em in a straight quarter mile run.....Quaife R180 ok? I don’t really want to do an R200 swap if not necessary.

Thanks Tom.....you bet I’ll take it to a pro then. Is the Quaife unit stronger than the stock? Would that eliminate the need to go R200? How much horsepower is too much for an R180 Quaife LSD ?

Just curious Tom and Mike. What is involved in buying the Quaife R180 LSD insert that Whitehead sells and installing in our existing R180 diff? Is that a job for the do it yourselvers or is it a job for a diff shop?

Agree.....I think it’s an RB 25 or 26. The main bearing caps are all joined in the picture.....twin cam......really cool engine.

Interesting 1973 E88 240z head info
Lumens.....Here are the 73 pistons shaved and installed. If you decide to have them machined, do it before you install the rings.

Interesting 1973 E88 240z head info
Glad you found these specs on the 73 Nissan piston Blue. I had noticed the taller piston back in 2012 when I bought some .040 over 73 pistons from my local Nissan parts guy (they were still available). I tried to find out more info, and no one could help.....not even Sam Neves (built Greg Ira’s car) or Dave Rebella. I shaved the pistons .015 inches just to be safe. If the gasket is approximately .055 inches and the piston comes out .027 inches, you have .028 inches clearance. If that isn’t enough, you either shave the piston or use a thicker head gasket......question is how much (or little clearance) is enough.......anyone got that answer?

Cody's Goon

Interesting.....anyone on Hybrid Z know the compression thickness of the stock Nissan head gasket?

I agree with madkaw......one exception......if the block was machined. It would be nice to know what the safe clearance is between piston and head (drag racers install with almost no clearance), and you can get numerous answers depending on who you ask. . Valve clearance should not be a problem because 73 pistons are flycut. The stock L28 pistons come out about .018 inches with no problem. If the block isn’t decked , I would think the stock gasket would be fine. If you are concerned (if it keeps you up at night) you can always shave the top of the piston down to the sleeping point.

If you are concerned, you can always shave the pistons .010 inches or so. The crush on the stock head gasket is about .055 inches, so clearance should be adequate......I would think C/R should be bumped.....not the head lol......that's a good thing!

2+2 front end married to a 240
You can do all kinds of swaps.....been there done that. You’ll need a good frame shop ( and $$$$$$) to make sure everything lines up.
