  1. Guy- I'll tell you a hot combo - pull the SU's from your L28 with the Stage III cam - give that new L24 the SU's from the L28 and put Mikuni 44's on the L28 with the Stage III cam...........hot mama!! That would be one torque'n SOB! Totally bitch'n show and go!!
  2. PO's do some strange things - but there is nothing wrong with an N42!
  3. Jim- I just looked in your garage - she is going to be a beauty - your being a great steward of your Z - excellent job!!
  4. Great write up on this wiring schedule guys! I had a set of driving lights back in the '70's and have been thinking of it again! Be sure to post some pictures of your Z once you get the lights mounted. Are you going to use the under bumper mounting holes? What kind of lights are you going with?
  5. I'm confused on why you would use a Unisyn to balance the carbs but not use it for the most detailed part (not logical). There are tons of info on this site for Hitachi carbs - I would read - study - gather some information - and make a sound educated decision on how to correct your problem. Even better, there is a great DVD out that can assist you with step by step instructions on tuning - rebuilding - float adjustment -the whole nine yards............the search feature is a powerful tool. Keep us posted on your results!
  6. She is a absolute thrill to drive every time I start the ignition!! She gets a lot of nods and grins at car shows as well. I've had several people ask me to fire her up just so they can hear the Mikuni triples and the air flow...........you gotta love it!
  7. Brandon - He rolled right over my post........it didn't even phase him! He may be a little overfocused on this rebuild - but, if he drove a triple Mikuni it would bring him right into the drivers seat in a hurry - he wouldn't know what to do with all that torque and power from a little straight line 6 - SU's are fine but nothing like triple Mikuni's!! You guys need to get out of that Richmond heat and drive down the Blue Ridge Parkway (or should I say up / elevation 3500 ft) and come and drive my Z - I promise you it will put a smile on your pops face!! There is no better feeling than to pull a mountain with twisty's with my L28! Open invitation Guy - what do you have to loose other than the heat of Richmond!!

  9. Guy - You've gotta try some triples on one of your engine - it is a total surprise on how much more power and torque you can generate out of a solid rebuilt engine. My power band is 2000-5500 rpm and it is F'n fantastic!! Todd at Wolf Creek really does a great job on his Mikuni's!
  10. ..................nothing to the cam?
  11. Don - Get ready for a great ride. Back in '71 the Z's only transmission was a 4 speed. A popular mod is upgrading the transmission to a 5 speed. If you are looking to putting her back to stock I would be interested in taking the 5 speed off your hands and shipping you my 4 speed (we would need to discuss that live if you have an interest in a swap). Be sure to look under the driver and passenger side floorboards / back hatch area / battery carrier / wheel well / dog legs / rocker panel / for rust - these are the most prone areas. Passenger side brake lights show up on e-bay very often (the drivers side is usually the worse one due to the exhaust fumes). There are a few nice one's right now for a small price of about $70.00 - windshield wiper arms may still be available from Nissan - call you local Nissan dealer and see if they can order part number 26380-E4600 (just happened to have a parts manual next to me this AM). While you are getting that you may want to fresh up part number 28890-E4100 - shaft boot for the wiper arm. Get some pic's up when you get the Z - welcome to the site!
  12. If I were you I would not do another thing until you READ the Pertronix install instructions!! The tach goes to the NEG side of the coil. Sorry for the double post!
  13. I'm really surprised that a lot of folks do not run the original air cleaner boxes. I know that they are not the most attractive things out there but they do have a clear cut function with the built in air horns.......I ran those snap on air filters when I first got my car and went to visit Roger at the Z Barn. He hooked me up with a great air cleaner box with all the hardware - gave it a refresh/paint job (great link on the site by the way) and it automaticlly added power the first time I ran the car..........proper air horn size makes a big difference!! Desertmonkey - the mechanical pump is plenty to run both your carbs just so it is in proper working condition. There is a location on your passenger engine bay for your Nissan fuel filter holder to attach to. I have only ran 1 filter with no issue's but that will be based on the condition of your tank.
  14. Have you tried removing the BR and totally bypassing...........might be worth a try. I physically removed my BR and have no issues at all.
  15. Gary Agreed.....I never had challenges with my point system - I upgraded to Protronix due to looking for a hotter spark. Never an issue with points for me and very easy to set/adjust/maintain.
  16. If the geometry of the linkage throws off your linkage plaecment you could go to a LOKAR throttle cable (there's a thread on that install). Honestly I would not reduce the insulator depth - I would re-arrange the air cleaner to a different style (several filters on the market than the typical Datsun original air cleaner). The built in air horns of the original air filter housing (if you loose them) will decrease some of your power though. Those air horns have a purpose and a lot of folks don't use them for some crazy reason??
  17. I'm a little confused - IMO the spacers are really insulators to help reduce the heat transfer from the manifold directly to the carb..........not sure why you would want to remove the insulator....... I would be concerned about additional heat buildup and poor performance.
  18. Every 100 miles I roll I am pulling plugs and reading - tweaking each cylinder fuel setting to get the nice light tan/grayish top of the plug. The beautiful thing about these is there is a setting for each plug - they are dead on or not - once your plug is reading correctly you are done. http://www.ngksparkplugs.com/tech_support/spark_plugs/faqs/faqread.asp http://www.4secondsflat.com/Spark_plug_reading.html
  19. My first experience with Pertronix w/1.5 coil was not a good one - my second install with a 3.0 ohmn coil is great - hot coil and no issues at all.
  20. With the Pertronix set up it is recommended by Pertronix NOT to use the ballest resistor with a 40,000 volt coil (3 ohm), you will need to connect those two wires together or to put a jumper in to by-pass the ballast resistor. I just installed Pertronix w/3 ohm coil and mine is dead on. The first one I installed from them was defective and had to go back to points. You may want to remove the Pertronix entirely and install points (along with your ballast resistor and correct coil - and see if that fixes things. If it does, you will know it's your Pertroinx set up
  21. We had snow flurries last night...........crazy!!
  22. It's rained here in the Carolina's for the past week plus. 2" of rain yesterday and 42 degree's outside right now - damn, what month is it?!! Not much drive time at all. Missed a car show last Saturday due to rain - Huge trophies (more trophies than cars) but I'm not getting my car out with a hail warning ........others did (but naturally it did not hail)..............maybe this weekend will dry out some. Just finalized Mikuni's and trying to get some miles on her so I can finalize adjustments................oh well.......it's still raining right now! The sun has to shine soon!!
  23. Welcome! We all like projects so keep us posted with lots of pictures! You may want to check out HybridZ - those guys are a little more radical than most of us with a lot of crazy mods and fabs..........they drop in Vette engines and all kind of crazy stuff!
  24. Great looking project! Glad to see you found us - get ready for a great ride (and some elbow grease)!
