  1. Check out "Forbes Field" or "Forbes AFB" in a Google search and on Google Earth to see the track (Heartland Park) that was built there. Dennis
  2. Looks like factory carpet padding. If you choose not to reuse it, you can cut modern carpet padding to fit. Dennis
  3. Later in my career, I did a little time at K.I, too. Cruise into Marquette for all you can eat Fish Fry Friday! I think just about every base I was at is now closed or turned over to the Guard or Reserve - Forbes AFB in Topeka, Chanute AFB in Rantoul, Richards Gebaur AFB near Kansas City, March AFB near Riverside, CA. Keesler AFB, near Biloxi, still appears to be open. Thanks for the stroll down memory lane - the '71 Z was with me for all except Chanute & Clark. Dennis
  4. That certainly shows the darker side of Angeles City, New Balibago. American influence and money don't always bring out the best in people. After the US got out of Viet Nam, the Russians moved into some of the abandoned bases. The locals referred to them as "Americans without money". On a more pleasant note, there were plenty of other things to do in the PI and SEA that didn't involve the downtown bars. It was an interesting part of the world for a 23 year old. Dennis
  5. A couple days ago I asked if anyone had a picture of how they dressed when their Z was new. That started me searching to see if I had any from 1971. Here's a picture of what a well dressed new Z owner (me) wore in November of 1971in Northern Wisconsin. I was an Air Force 1st Lieutenant fresh back from living in the Philippines for a year and a half while keeping the world safe from Communism. Be sure to check out the white leather sheepskin lined jacket I had picked up in India while traveling around Asia. Also note the grey cashmere turtleneck sweater. I was cooler than the snow I was standing in. Dennis
  6. I've driven my '71 for 45 years without any vapor lock problems. Summer temps run about 115º here in the desert. Dennis
  7. And, also, no selfies just wearing stringback gloves. We need to set some limits On the other hand, so to speak, does anyone have old photos of how they really did dress when their Z was new? There must be a few of us who still have Members Only jackets stashed in the back of the closet or in a box in the attic. Dennis
  8. It sums it up. But, since my wife is a psychologist, I thought I'd ask her for a few more characteristics. Here's her list, see what fits. disregard for feelings of others a lack of remorse or shame easily lies to achieve goals egocentric Dennis
  9. Other than both having two doors and four wheels, not much else is the same. Fun collector item, however. It's kind of like the bootleg record albums that were made in Taiwan in the 1970s. I remember a Johnny Cash country album with the picture of a Black singer on the record sleeve. Dennis
  10. Buy a lottery ticket. This clearly is your lucky day. Dennis
  11. They do make nose picking a little easier . Other than that, I'd think "Pretentious SOB". Dennis
  12. It certainly was a different time. Even the pit crew guys Going over the BRE Z are nicely dressed. Gotta love the white pants. Dennis
  13. Nice find. Any worries about cutting the necessary holes? Dennis
  14. I think we all have those "I just want to get in the Z and drive without having to fix something, again" days...or weeks....or years. Kind of explains those Barn Find Zs that turn up from time to time. Be strong! Dennis
  15. Find a shop and ask what they need. When I've had it done, the shop I used only needed a line drawing that was then scanned and the engraving machine did the rest..
  16. A good engraving shop can scan a graphic, resize as needed, and then engrave it on metal. Shouldn't be too big a deal for a good shop. Dennis
  17. Not sure what kind of hubs and knock offs you're talking about, but any local trophy shop should be able to handle your engraving needs. Dennis
  18. Add me to those who say to just repair the damage and move on. It will appeal to a larger group of buyers than the BRE look. The analogy above comparing it to a real estate sale was spot on. The less personalized, the wider attention from potential buyers. Dennis
  19. The red handles would certainly liven up the interior if one wasn't concerned about orginality. I like it. Dennis
  20. As noted above by John. However, location of the tank also contributed to the process in rear end collisions as the tank was between the differential and the rear bumper and would come into contact the bolts mentioned on impact. In one of the many legal cases, the Studebaker Avanti was referenced as having its gas tank in a safer location above the differential and between the trunk and the back seat. The Avanti was used as an example to show that the proper design was common knowledge at the time the Pinto was built. i remember a political cartoon published at the time of the Pinto issue that depicted a B52 bomber dropping Pintos instead of bombs over Vietnam Dennis
  21. Could be a good deal or could be a pig. In the shop for thirteen and a half years of the fourteen years he owned it? I would probe deeper. As for the $5,000 total restoration on the '72 Z..................is there a zero missing from that figure? Dennis

  23. Yup - fiberglass then and now. Dennis
