  1. Got some of that, too. My wife and son went skiing today in the local mountains - good snow and temperature in the 50s. All part of the charm of California. Years ago, to prove a point, some friends and I left the warm desert and headed up the mountain to go sledding in the snow. After sliding down the hill a few times and a quick lunch we jumped back in the car and headed for the beach and went wading in the Pacific before heading back to the desert. I don't miss the snow I grew up with in Wisconsin too much. Dennis
  2. May as well put the junked weather stripping to good use on a deserving Z. A foot of snow? Bummer. Mid 80s here today and no break in sight Dennis

I'm guessing that if it had four speakers, it's stereo. You have the button that goes from side to side above the radio rather than the vertical antenna rocker switch to the right of the radio? My Z was built 4/71. Dennis

One speaker for the stock AM mono radio. The first mod I made after buying mine in 1971 was to replace the radio with an AM/FM stereo aftermarket unit and add a second speaker on the right, behind the existing speaker holes. Had a little issue with mounting the power antenna rocker switch, but all worked out. Dennis
  5. Thanks for the insight. When checking the rear float bowl last week, that was one of the things I anticipated as a cause. I checked the float and it appeared to be good, not heavy, not cracked, no holes, no indication of holding fuel. Haven't checked the front float, yet. Dennis
  6. Thanks for the tips. New fuel filter, but I'm sure there's crud in the gas tank. On the rear float bowl valve, I sprayed carb cleaner through it and also checked to see if it was closing tight enough to stop gas flow. Passed. I may tear into it later today, again. Dennis

There's some interesting reading on that site. I also liked the bits about show cars at the end of the model listings. They do show a Z and mention that it replaced the roadster. Dennis
  8. Actually, both float bowls are spewing fuel. I have only opened the rear float bowl to check things out at this point. As for the rear float....it does float and moves freely on its pivot. I've shot carb cleaner through the valve as well as manually held it closed to see if it would keep cleaner from spraying through - it did stop flow. Same electric fuel pump and pressure since 1977. Rain in the forecast today through Tuesday, so it will be a few days before I open both float bowls up for another look. I appreciate your troubleshooting suggestions. Dennis
  9. Thanks Mark. I'll give it a try. We're in for a few days of rain starting tonight, so it may be a "next week" project. I have a question. When the float shuts the valve and the fuel pump is still pumping, why isn't the fuel tank return line relieving the pressure that seems to be at the fuel float bowl? Might that line be blocked/clogged? Too much fun. Dennis
  10. I took the rear carb float chamber apart today to clean things up and check the condition of the float and the fuel shut off valve. I cleaned the sediment out of the bowl with the help of some spray carb cleaner, made sure the float still floated, checked the action of the inlet needle valve. I put everything back together with a new gasket. When I started it up, I still had gas puking out. It may be time to bite the bullet and ship the carbs away for a professional rebuild. Not the way I had hoped the day would go.

Nothing wrong with recycling a good idea that's worked in the past. Happens in movies, music, books, clothing styles, TV shows, and many many consumer items. Now, if Nissan would just give it a try with a new Z, that would be dandy. Dennis
  12. Nice job! I'm sure you'll have eager customers if you decide to expand production. And you did this all in your spare time? Dennis
  13. I think a lot of people watch just for the crashes, but may not admit it. There was talk at one time a few years ago of having electric cars make an artificial amplified noise so pedestrians would be aware of them if crossing a street without first looking both ways. You're correct in noting silent racing wouldn't be as fun for most of us as a spectator sport. But, I'm sure there are hearing impaired (deaf) individuals who love to go to the races. Dennis
  14. It just hooks under the protruding lip forward of the battery tray. Since my battery is shorter than the original, I added a painted one inch board under the battery to bring it up to the height of the firewall attachment point for the top hold down frame. Dennis
  15. Just got back from the local Nissan dealer. Today, an older parts specialist was behind the counter. I gave him the part number for the float bowl gasket that was NLA yesterday. He looked it up and asked how many hundred I wanted. I ordered three at $1.70 each and they'll be here Thursday morning. Lesson learned: Always ask for the "old guy" behind the counter when ordering vintage Z parts at the Nissan dealership. Dennis
  16. Thanks! I'll give it another try at the local dealer. Dennis
  17. I went to my local Nissan dealer's parts department today to see if I could order a couple float bowl gaskets and the young guy behind the counter says they are NLA. Anyone gotten them from a dealer lately? (part# 16064-22010) I see that they're available from a few places on line, including Courtesy Nissan, but i hate to pay almost $10 shipping on a $1.25 gasket if I can get them locally. I've had better luck with the older parts guy at the dealership in tracking down Datsun parts. Dennis
  18. I'm going to get a couple new gaskets for the float bowls before I open them up and then, hopefully, clean the crud and corruption around the valve to fix the problem. The last thing I need is an EXTERNAL combustion engine. Dennis
  19. My Datsun adventure of the day was to figure out why my '71, which has been sitting for a while, was puking gas onto the hot exhaust pipe below the carbs. Looks like I'll be taking the float bowls apart for a thorough cleaning. Dennis

I had one just like #3 when I lived in Northern Wisconsin. Haven't seen another since I moved to the southern California desert about 40 years ago. Dennis
  21. For me, life is too short to ponder ways to refill toothpaste tubes. But, beer cans..........and how to reseal those pesky pull tabs........now there's a challenge. Dennis
  22. As you said..........Move on. The 2K price has 30+ years of the owner's emotional ties and memories factored in. Dennis

Welcome to the group! Always good to see another '71 being appreciated. Dennis

That could be a little touchy as it's a legal vehicle identifier linked to the title. Hopefully someone has gone through the process and can give you some pointers. Good luck! Dennis
  25. As another measure of comparison, what's the difference in price? Dennis
