  1. A lot of thought went into that project. I guess that if you want a hot rod and you don't have a '32 Ford to start with, you use what you have. Dennis
  2. Nice job on the steering wheel! It looks like new, as far as I remember Keep the tips coming. Dennis
  3. With all the other issues (not running, salvage title, can't pass SMOG, etc.), I'd also question the "rust free" claim on a 44 year old car from Chicago. Looking at the value/cost of all the replaced parts and seals that are listed, getting it running is the only way to recoup any of of the money that's been poured onto it, other than parting it out. That should be job #1 at this point. Dennis
  4. To answer your question.........Sounds like a $1.500 Z as it sits. Dennis
  5. And if the feature was instead titled "Pick The One That Doesn't Belong Here" which one would you name? Dennis

Just needs a battery and a little rubbing compound to bring out the shine in the paint. Well, maybe a title, too. What could go wrong? Dennis

Gas price dropped 20 cents a gallon since yesterday here in the SoCal desert. Now at $1.99. A few more days like that and we'll be below a dollar a gallon! I never thought I'd see sub $2 gas again. The experts seem to think low prices will be around for a while. Dennis
  8. My 4/71 one owner Z has not had the panel removed since it was originally installed in Japan. The fasteners are six plastic rivets same as used to hold interior plastic panels (one in each corner and two in the middle edges as in the picture in an earlier post) and four black Philips head screws in black cup washers in the positions shown in the earlier picture. I wonder why they used screws and rivets instead of one or the other - preferably screws as I've had three or four rivets pop out over the last 44 years. Dennis

"Nature friendly" fuel could be hydrogen, natural gas, or even farm animal waste. Ask your friend where he fills up his tank. Dennis
  10. If the new owner has it sand blasted to get rid of the rust, all that will be left will be the windows and the tires. Craigslist ads can be soooo entertaining. Dennis

Looking at the form mentioned on the DMV web site, it seems that they only release the name of the current registered owner on file, not the complete history back to original owner. Perhaps I'm wrong. Anyone ever use this search option recently? Dennis

Nice price, but there are a few red flags - lost title, needs carb work to run smoothly (maybe), all emblems removed, no picture of interior that needs to be "reinserted". But, nice price. Dennis
  13. I bought a set of those, too. Did I need them? No. Did I want them? Yes, but only since 1971 when I first saw a Z in Tokyo. Was I pleased that someone went to the trouble to make them available at a price a little over 10% of what I paid for my entire new Z in 1971? Yes. It's free enterprise and that's how the world works best. If the vendor makes a few bucks off the deal for his effort, we're both happy. My Z isn't a full restoration or a show car, but it gives me warm fuzzies to add the new lights. Dennis
  14. Like so many things in life, it's all about supply and demand. I think it's good that the option exists for those who have the need and the spare change. Dennis
  15. The G37 convertible is a very nice mix of performance and luxury. Very powerful, smooth, and probably the best sounding exhaust note I've heard in years. Plus, it's a great looking car with a design that will age well. Dennis
  16. Which continues to prove....."One man's trash is another man's treasure.". Nice find! Dennis
  17. Very nice. Being the owner of both a G37 and a 240Z, I can appreciate the ties between the two in spite of a four decade gap in driving sophistication. Dennis
  18. Well, that explains the dry cleaning charge my mechanic adds to all his bills. Dennis

Looks good. What paint did you use? Dennis

Looks good! I hope to get to mine in the New Year after I paint the rear panel around the lights. That's the plan, anyway, and my plans are always subject to change. Dennis

$70 wherever fine tools are sold. Seems a bit pricey, but when you need it, you need it. Kind of like a AAA card. Edit: I also see versions for about half that cost, but they seem a little harder to use with just a wing nut for tightening rather than the larger crossbar for better leverage. Dennis

And one won't need a passport to make the Venus trip, so it's less complicated than going to Canada. Dennis

Sometimes, adding up the cost of ownership can be a little daunting. That's where rationalization comes in. In my case, I bought my 240Z new in 1971 for $4,200. Over the following 43 years I replaced the struts three times, bought several sets of tires, rebuilt the transmission twice, replaced the transmission twice (most recently with a 5 speed), two clutch replacements, and one exhaust system. Along the way, the Z went into storage for a decade or so and then underwent a refurbishment that replaced all fluids, hoses, belts, brakes, new wheels, an upgraded AC system, and a few other essentials (including the 5 speed mentioned earlier) for about $8,500. Now, for the rationalizing. All of those costs, including routine maintenance along the way, probably are still thousands of dollars less than the cost of a new 2014 Scion FRS. So, I think I'm ahead of the game in terms of dollars expended. And, I've had 43 years of pleasure, anxiety, and adventures with the Z. Priceless. Dennis

NSA. They know where everything is. Dennis
  25. Not sure I'd trust sketchy translation of technical processes. Sometimes, close enough isn't good enough. I always think back to a Japanese tent I bought many years ago. The assembly manual was titled, "Erection Instructions". Dennis
