  1. I remember when the 110 paint on my Z looked that good - it was November of 1971. Dennis
  2. Welcome to the Group! Don't be shy about asking questions as you get into your project. The folks on this list have helped me resolve many issues with my '71. Dennis
  3. I've used the rubbing compound type of headlight restoration kit. It worked well. I didn't use a buffing pad on a power drill, just a rag and elbow grease. Dennis
  4. Sounds like a great "find". Enjoy the adventure and welcome to the group! Dennis
  5. Getting a little off track - but this issue takes me back almost 40 years. When my Z was still near new, one of the gaskets needed to be replaced. Datsun dealers were few and far between where I lived at the time, but British car dealerships were a bit more common. The parts department at the local British Leyland dealer sold me gaskets for (if I remember correctly) an Austin Healey 3000 that fit perfectly on the insulator block. Dennis
  6. What's the next step below "Extremely bad shape" on the condition scale? This one looks quite beat. Sad Z. Dennis
  7. Clean up and install the original motor. It contains ample fun. Dennis
  8. Nissan seems to have "formalized" part of the marking system a bit. I bought a G37 Infiniti convertible on Saturday and it came with a "Quality Inspection Certificate" signed by the Infiniti Quality Assurance Engineer who track tested the car for five miles. It includes the engineer's signature, car chassis #, and odometer reading at conclusion of testing. I'll be looking for a frame and place to hang it on the wall tomorrow. Dennis
  9. Looks like a match to the 944 seats in the ad. Good luck with the project. They should be comfortable - I put about 20 years of "butt time" in my 944 before selling it and and never had an uncomfortable moment. Dennis
  10. Drove my Z through a blizzard in Minnesota and Northern Wisconsin the day I picked it up from the dealer in 1971. It also spent a couple winters in Kansas. Some of the best (intentional) parking lot "donuts" I've ever made on ice & snow were in the Z. It's a capable winter car. The exposure to corrosive winter elements will be bad for your Z, however. If you plan to keep the Z, and have a little extra money, a sacrificial winter "Beater" isn't a bad idea. Dennis
  11. I still own my first car - bought it in 1967 and can't let go. I've had the Z since '71, the Avanti since '75, and the 914-6 since '92. My wife, the psychologist, says I'm auto-retentive. A few cars have come and gone over the years, but they were just transportation. I feel your pain. Dennis
  12. The "extra stout" lighted antenna would make that Z easier to find in a parking lot at night. Might consider one.... Dennis
  13. From an ecological point of view, I'm guessing that the tree reduces the Z's Carbon Footprint considerably. However, it probably doesn't help the gas mileage. Dennis
  14. Every time I visit this site's Home Page I am amazed by how the owner of the red Z pictured in the center of the page was able to get that tree to grow through the Z's sunroof opening. It must really mess with the center of gravity on tight turns. http://www.classiczcars.com/modules/Jig/index.php Astounding! Dennis
  15. Generally, "universal" means "close to what you really want" and your definition of "close" may be quite different than mine. So, to answer your question, yes the seller can list those cars, a few trucks, and more as they all have fenders upon which flares can be bolted. I'd spend a few extra bucks on flares made only for the Z. Dennis
  16. Be sure to ask for the club discount when you buy from MSA. The picture you see of my Z is a little dated - it's taken from a Google Earth Street Level shot from a couple years ago. Sorry, no fender mirrors in my future, but the fender flares are now bolted on. The journey continues. Dennis
  17. Anyone for "Running On Empty" by Jackson Browne? (Sample lyrics below) Dennis Looking out at the road rushing under my wheels Looking back at the years gone by like so many summer fields In sixty-five I was seventeen and running up one-o-one I don't know where I'm running now, I'm just running on Running on - running on empty Running on - running blind Running on - running into the sun But I'm running behind Gotta do what you can just to keep your love alive Trying not to confuse it with what you do to survive In sixty-nine I was twenty-one and I called the road my own I don't know when that road turned onto the road I'm on
  18. OK, since I can't write the name of Surf guitar legend **** Dale without being censored, let's call him what his mother called him - Richard Dale. Dennis
  19. Good choice of cars. Can't go wrong with a '71 Z...or at least that's what I've been telling myself for the last 39 years. Welcome to the group! Dennis
  20. Try this link for other opinions: http://www.classiczcars.com/forums/showthread.php?t=37676&highlight=door+panels Let us know what you do and how it turns out. Good luck with the project! Dennis
  21. Many parts are still available through your local Nissan dealer. MSA is in Orange, CA (sort of near Disneyland). Ebay and Pick-A-Part yards tend to solve many other needs. Dennis
  22. So, to belabor the point even more...... A few questions: • Why won't they give you the car even though you showed that you have the proper registration paperwork after it was impounded - what do they now say you have to do to get the car? • How much is the daily impound fee plus towing at this point? • Do you now have the plates that you said were "in the mail"? • What's the car worth? While I feel your pain, I think there's more to the story. Good luck! Dennis
  23. You forgot to warn about the need to put on a drool bib before looking at that site. Dennis
