I'm looking for some nice wheels to put on my Z, but I'm horrified by the price of the custom wheels that the Z is limited to without a 5 lug conversion. I'm starting to wonder about those wheel converters/adapters you can get from the US. Can anyone else in Australia confirm these are illegal in all the states?
  2. A rare shot of me outside the Z-cave...

I lay under mine for the most part. If you are going to do it from underneath get some safety glasses first! :dead: I tried the heater method but being an impatient bugger I wasn't happy with the speed of the process. I did work out a much faster method in the end, but as with all short cuts this one has it's risks. What I did was get a woodworking chisel with a blade about 1 cm wide, the cheaper the better. Don't heat the undercoat at all, in fact the colder the better. Scrape the undercoat off with the chisel using a low angle of attack and a rapid back and forth motion. In my case the undercoat came off very quickly in smallish flakes. It worked most effectively when the undercoat is somewhat brittle. Of course the main problem with this method is that you occasionally scratch the metal, but if you go easy on the chisel it will be negligable. In fact it will probably be better if you are going to POR-15 the metal afterwards. And for the leftover residue I bought a can of enamel reducer which worked a treat apart from slowly dissolving my scotch-brite scourers.

I feel for you mate. Don't be down on your self about the flowers thing. Bloody hell you moved in with her and signed a long term lease, surely that counts for more than flowers. My two cents worth is that you need to get away from her, this living together-working together situation can't be doing you any good. You have to do the right thing by yourself.

Thanks heaps for that link Caen Fred, saved me a lot of heart ache. There is no way I will get permanent racing stripes painted on if I can removable vinyl set! Thanks everyone else for the input.:classic:

I'm about to get a new paint job on the Z and for some reason the idea of a racing stripe is stuck in my head. What's the general feeling on racing stripes? Am I losing it or what?

Don't know him but he lives near me. Youngish guy, I see him on Canning Hwy round Alfred Cove all the time. Been meaning to have a chat as soon as I catch him parked. The body kit he has on the back looks alright.

I thought the price was quite reasonable given the mods and the total body restoration. I guess I am a modifier myself so I have a different perspective halz. Might help if I saw the car too Keep working on your friend Gav. Like you, if I bought another Z I would definitely spend a lot more and get one in better nick. Not that mine was too bad, just run down. I'd swear that every previous owner only did just enough to keep it on the road.

Loved you earlier post BBalls - funny stuff! I'd second Mr Camo's request for photos of some of this stuff. Put me down for a battery tray though.

I believe the diesel crank has a longer stroke. 83 mm versus 79mm for the normal L28. zhome have some good articles on the stroker topic.
  15. This must be a relatively common problem because my Z was doing the exact same thing before I stripped it down. The carpet on the passenger side was getting soaked with no visible leaks causing the soaking. I have a suspicion that it may have been due to the aircon plumbing. If you don't have air-con then read no further. If your Z has an AC like mine you will find two heater hoses running from the air-con unit back into the passenger side wheel arch. The hoses pass cut thru the wheel arch on their way to the humungous air con thing under the dash on the passenger side. ie You should be able to see the two hoses behind the front wheel under the wheel arch. They cut holes, about the size of a 20 cent coin, in the wheel arch to put these hoses thru, then sealed around the hoses with rubber grommets - the rubber grommets are probably quite corroded by now. If you have been driving in the wet the tire could be spraying water at these corroded grommets and then leaking into the passenger footwell. Needless to say, I don't like the way they fitted my air-con.:tapemouth

What Steve said: The diesel patrols in Oz used a SD33. FWIW I've seen a few LD28s for sale in W.A. so they are obtainable.

Thanks for the heads up Wexter. Well worth the four bucks I paid for just the Z section. The other section on the grey import scene was excellent too. Make sure you get a copy of this people.

  19. He went about this the wrong way. It is more than likely that the gear has been sitting there for 10 years and he could have made the present owner a minor cash offer and get to take everything at his leisure. In fact it is probably not too late to try and contact the owner, I would advise the kid to do that rather than set the cops on him straight away.

I'm embarassed to say that I did not even notice if it was 240 or 260 Haydn. It is not far from my place so I'll go past again and pay more attention. It looked to be in absolutely schmicko original condition though.

Thats a bit sad, leaving your Z on the side of the freeway. If you find the owner and make an on the spot cash offer he might be so depressed about breaking down that he would take it. I have spotted quite a few 2 seaters around my way lately. There is a beaut red one that was parked on the road to Point Walter yesterday, very nicely presented.

I think those black mirrors will look great if combined with tinted windows and blacked out chrome like Petes. It will give it a subtle modern look IMO. No way it would look ricey unless you got the chrome finished mirrors and combined it with stickers, large rear wing and a classy set of neon lights underneath.

Twin towbars on a Soarer Alfa? I knew soarers were heavy and V8 but I never thought people would start using them to pull caravans and stuff:stupid:

The numbers definitely don't match so no issues going with an L28, in fact my Z appears to be a bit of a frankenstein with the panels varying from red to blue to black in original colours. It put me off doing an original resto because the value will never be there in the long run compared to a matching numbers example. I'm about 90% sure I will go carbed L28 though. Less cost/hassle and means you can do other mods (brakes, suspension etc) over an extended period instead of having everything sorted out for the licensing. But F54 is a good idea so I can keep my options open for later. As for the rocker panels, sometimes I wished I had never looked inside them on mine:ermm: Not pretty!

Good story Mick, glad to see someone evening out the score. IMO crotch rocket jockeys are all nuts. I witnessed one planting his bike into the side of a car when he ran a red light. Pretty nasty injuries but he was lucky he got thrown over the car and missed everything except the curb as he skidded off the road.
