W.A.Z-cars (Australia)
The engine work is turning out to be much more expensive than I anticipated:dead: Otherwise it going well, just slowly. Nice shots by the way. I'm surpised that the majority of the Zs were 2 seaters. Where are all the 2+2 owners?

yellow 260Z
Thanks Mr Camouflage. Bright yellow is not for everyone but I really like it. The flared rear guards are of unknown origin - the previous owner did not know where they came from. They are steel though, and look a lot better after the body guy gave them some attention.

yellow 260Z
Refined, understated, subtle, discreet. These are four things I did not want to describe my paint job. Also, the front spoiler looks a lot better on the front than in the passenger seat.

True or False
I agree that you can't trust those numbers until you get a better idea of how they were calculated. Having said that, I believe there is reliable data illustrating an increase in those crime types in the U.K. following their virtual prohibition of firearms.

Aftermarket Seats
I've heard good stories about Mazda MX5 (Miata) seats. Word has it that they are a good fit if you install them with their original runners. They come with bonus built in speakers too. edited to add: This link has some info on 240SX seats which I believe are the same as the 180SX http://www.automedic.org/smzcc/tech_tips.htm#Flywheel

Identifing engine type
The head will definitely have an identifying label on it. Mine was located between the 1st and 2nd spark plug. e.g. look around where the red ring is.

Aus - Which gearbox is it?
Can't give you an exact figure right now for weight, but I would guess somewhere around 40 kg based on the last time I shifted it in the garage. Thanks everyone for the info. I'll try the 1st gear test, Steve, but I have a slight problem in that the box does not have a gearstick. I tried to change gears without the gearstick by just moving the gearstick-attachment-bracket-thingo, but buggered if i could get it to move much at all. Is this bad?

Aus - Which gearbox is it?
Thanks mate. Based on your info I think it is pretty likely that I have the 260Z manual tranny. The guy I bought my car from also had a 2+2 into which he had swapped a FI 2.8. Assuming that he got his parts from a 280zx, then he probably also swapped in the 280ZX gearbox and has given me his old 260Z 2+2 gearbox. Hopefully this is the case and I don't have a 4 cylinder box

Aus - Which gearbox is it?
I was given a manual gearbox of unknown origin when I bought my auto 260Z. Now that I am getting close to doing the manual conversion I am interested to know what type of gearbox it is so I can work out the ratios. I pulled the speedo cogs out of both the old auto and the mystery manual yesterday. Unsurprisingly, the auto had a black cog so I have the 3.54 differential. The mystery manual, on the other hand, had a blue cog (3.7 diff). Could anyone tell me which manual Zs came out in Aus with the 3.7? Will this gearbox go OK with the 3.54? Thanks Chris

AU - Cheap Simmons?
Yeah, 180SX wheels have a significant positive offset and won't fit a Z. They have the same bolt pattern as the Z though (4 stud 114.3mm). I took a look at the Dept. of Transport W.A. website and found the information below. It seems WA, unlike other Aussie states, does not expressly prohibit the use of spacers. Alternative road wheels are permitted under the following conditions : (a) Rim width must not exceed the maximum rim width specified by the manufacturer by more than 25mm (1") (for passenger vehicles manufactured after 1st January 1973, the manufacturers rim width shall be taken as that specified on the tyre placard). In any event, rim width shall not exceed 177.8 mm (7") unless specified by the manufacturer as standard equipment for the vehicle in question. No increase in rim width is permitted for vehicles fitted with original equipment rims in excess of 177.8 mm (7") width. ( The wheel is contained completely within the body work of the vehicle which includes acceptable flares. © The wheel does not foul any part of the body or suspension under all conditions of travel (d) The vehicle handling is not impaired in any way. (e) The tyre to rim fitment must be in accordance with the Tyre and Rim Association Manual. (f) Rim diameters must be the same as specified by the manufacturer. (g) The wheel must be one designed for use with the vehicle with respect to bolt pitch circle and wheel nut tapers (h) The track must not be increased by more than 25mm (1") over the maximum specified by the manufacturer.etc. edited - positive offset on 180SX, not negative knucklehead.

Another shot of the L26. The block is marked P30 and the head E88. As I understand it this is the combo we got in australia from 74 to 78.
