Whats your fuel economy?
to Sailorbob, with the four speed my 60mph rpm range was 3k after 5 spd, 2250. I can't say what increase in mileage I got, but it sure made cruising a lot nicer.

Whats your fuel economy?
76 w/5spd, 80mph and below 22-25(about 350 miles per fill). Over 80, forget it!

I have to find these!!!
I was watching Back to the Future yesterday and I think she should put her Delorean wheels on her Z. Just get four fronts and have her hubs and axles reworked for the bolt pattern if different and if the backspacing is close enough. Or use a full set then it will have that shelby daytona coupe look mmm......nice!

Pix of the white 70
I think that is the perfect Z. Clean, simple, elegant. Very well done.

so I'm planning to get an S30 Z! 240 or 280?
As for the trannie ratios, Stephen is right. Ever since I put in my 5 speed my 1st gear burouts have not been as spectacular, but that 2300 rpm at 60mph cruising speed is great!

so I'm planning to get an S30 Z! 240 or 280?
A S30 is a S30. Sure they got a little heavier as they aged and I'm with you Bu, I wish I could do the 240 bumper swap on my 280. Other than that I wouldn't change a thing. The FI is simple and effective and like Sailor-Bob says, pulls very good. 100mph with 5 speed. That being said I would really like to get a 240 and drop in a 280/5speed combo. I bet it would really fly then! I don't envy the choice you have to make and I feel your pain about selling your Z. I've been close a couple of times (money trouble). Whatever you decide, you are going to love it and don't sell it. We can always get more money, but Zs are quickly becoming a thing of the past. Best regards, Dan

Winter Project Questions Head Gasket
The real beauty about the Z engine is it's simplicity. That being said Darb, I would say the most dangerous thing to look out for would be breaking the exhaust bolts. I have a broken one on both my Z and my Maxima. Other than that you also have to consider, if your head needs done then your bottom end will surely suffer from the tighter valve sealing force in the combustion chamber and rings will start to lose their already marginal sealing ability. I say if your gonna do the head do it all and be done. If you want to just get by for a while longer just do the head gasket and the valve stem seals till you save up the dough for a complete rebuild. Now that I've givin you more to consider, good luck! 240Z Seat Replacement Options?
to RolfSis, there are many places to get the kits to replace the seat covers with . Black Dragon. If you look around long enough there is even a company that makes replacement covers and the foam to rebuild the original seats good as new, but expensive. About $300 for the pair, but you can do it yourself as the seats do come apart very easily.

Any 5-speeds in the NW?
to Go240Zags-yes and occasionaly I've found GenI cars there not in any shape to write home about though. To Austen, I replied to your PM and to Stephen, you are right. Thereason I didn't use my 4 spd stick was at the time I didn't know it would interchange and I didn't have any bushings for it. ( I was still a new hand at all this Z stuff-damned Zs)

Any 5-speeds in the NW?
To 76Datsun280z, if you are near Spokane, Wa, Pull and Save has more than a couple in their yard. $50 each, but save a couple for me. If that's not an option look for an 82-84 Maxima. They are direct bolt-ins you just have to bend the shifter back a little to clear the floor opening. The speedo gearing is even the same. I did it to my 76 and 100 mph in third is quite thrilling, not to mention dropping 800 rpm at 60mph. Hope this helps. Dan

wiring diagram
For only 17.95 + shipping you can get this diagram for your specific model year http://www.colorwiringdiagrams.com/datsun.htm. I have one for my 76 which is so much more complex than your car and it was the best money I have spent on my Z. If a person can't follow this wiring diagram thay need to shut up their car and take it to someone who can do it for them. I highly recommend this document to any classic Z owner.

240Z bumpers on a 280Z
I was trying to be funny when I said I didn't have high speed stability problems. Crosswinds are the bane of my 280 as well. I don't think it's the bumpers cuz it got pretty light without the bumper on it as well with it on. I do however like the look of those 240 bumpers and if I could I would switch. I know there are a lot of purists here and some might tell me to go to Hybridz for modifying my car. I say if anyone has changed anything on their car from original factory condition then they are driving a hybrid as is the case with the majority of us anyway.Just my .02 and I agree with sblake01, if your happy with your mods then I'm happy with them cuz they're your car not mine.

1971 240Z Family Treasure & letting go decisions
I say follow your dreams. While powerful, the s30 certainly isn't any more powerful than any of the newer cars being sold today, just in a much more fun package! Sounds like hubby might be a little jealous:rolleyes:

240Z bumpers on a 280Z
The only high speed stability problem I have with my 280 is my brain starts to drool like a mad dog with the speed:devious: leaving my decision making process very unstable
