Back-Fire from Hell
There is no emissions test required in NC. I am thinking of just plugging both holes and bypass the EGR valve permanently. Would that damage anything? Thanks. 280Z on its way to becoming a daily driver

Back-Fire from Hell
Ok, I actually had a part fall off my 1977 280Z over the weekend. I was working on my car and trying to figure out why I keep getting lost power, black smoke ect. I had the car idling in the garage and it was back-firing. The next thing I know I hear a loud POP (backfire) and the engine dies. I then notice that the pipe that connects the intake and exhaust manifold is on the ground. It is a metal pipe---looks like a copper pipe with a large heat shield bolted to it. This pipe runs from the back side of the exhaust manifold to the underside of the intake manifold and connect to what I think is the EGR valve. Anyway now when I crank the car blue fire shoots out the open hole in the exhaust manifold and then the car dies---Help can this part be replaced, repaired what is its purpose. Can I just plug the two holes??? 280Z on its way to becoming a daily driver

Progress
Alright, I have removed the intake manifold and the fuel rail. I am now attempting to get the exhaust manifold off. I have one bolt that is welded tight. I am afraid it is also rounded off so I might have to cut it off and tap it out. I have never tapped a broken bolt before. How difficult is this? Thanks for the help 280Z on its way to becoming a daily driver

Progress
Ok, I was finally able to remove my drive-shaft and replace the real oil seal in my 4 speed. No more leak I also spent some time on pressure washing the underside with engine degreaser to try and track down my oil leak. Well I have now determined that I have what looks like a leak from my head gasket The leak begins behind the intake and exhaust manifold and runs down the side of the block to drip on the floor of the garage. I also may have a leak in my oil pan gasket but not sure still checking. I am about to start pulling the top off my engine but wanted to ask a quick question. If you remember from my previous posts I am having an issue with backfiring, black smoke and loss of power on acceleration. Would a leaking head gasket cause this? Thanks for all the advice as I am not a mechanic but ohh can I take things apart 280Z on its way to becoming a daily driver

Rebuild L28
Thanks for the advice guys. I am going to do a complete engine and under carriage cleaning this weekend. I hope it is something simply like a gasket or PVC value. Will keep you posted. 280Z on its way to becoming a daily driver....

Rebuild L28
Ok for those who do not know I purchased a 1977 280Z that had been sitting for 4+ years. The car fired right up with a new battery so I had it towed to my house to begin what I thought was going to be a simple refresh-update to become a daily driver. I paid way too much for the car but they are so hard to find and the body was in such good condition I impulsively gave the PO 3 grand for it. (he saw me coming and stuck me hard) I have put another $500 into it. I drained the tank installed new filters, wire's, plugs, alternator, battery, vol regulator and front and rear brakes (new calipers and wheel cylinders). I have been working on a EFI issue (blows black smoke every now and then) and am seriously thinking of switching to a carb but that is another thread in itself. My main problem now is that I changed the oil last weekend and I have developed a persistent leak that I can not track down. I know its not the drain plug or the oil filter and I am really afraid one of the main seals is gone. Now I am looking at a rebuild. What kind of money can I expect to spend on a complete top and bottom rebuild. My goal would be to use as many parts as I can and only replace what I absolutely have too. I have never rebuilt an engine before but I can follow directions well and I know the basic principals. Thanks for all the help. P.S. Its for Sale :stupid: 280Z on its way to becoming someone's daily driver (I hope)

Front Caliper Removal
I just finished bleeding my new front calipers. I ended up using the 24" breaker bar and a lot of leverage to get them off. Thanks for all the help.

Rear Oil Seal
Alright, I have my Z on jack stands and have soaked the hell out of the 4 bolts that connect the drive shaft to the differential. The only problem is that the bolt are all facing the wrong way. The nuts are toward the back of the car and I can't get a wrench, socket, hell even my fingers on them. The bolt does not seem to have a head so I can not even try and loosen them from the front. Any suggestions. I really do not want to dismantle the entire rear but I honestly can not see how to get the drive shaft off. 280Z on its way to being a daily driver

Front Caliper Removal
I am replacing my stock '77 280Z front calipers and can not get the damn bolts broke loose. I have socked them with penetrating oil but I guess I need to let them soak longer. Short of a hacksaw and a blow torch any suggestions on how I can loosen them. Thanks. 280Z on its way to being a daily driver

Rear Oil Seal
Ok I have a 1977 280z 4 speed and I have developed a leak. I have a small but persistent leak where my driveshaft and transmission link up. According to Chilton's there is an oil seal on the back end of my 4 speed. How hard would it be to replace this seal without having to remove the transmission/engine. I got under the car and noticed that drive shaft bolts up to the yoke at the differential. Can I unbolt the shaft there and remove it from the transmission? If so how hard would it be to remove and put in a new seal? Thanks for all the help. 280z on its way to becoming a daily driver (I hope)

Interior/Dash Wire Harness
Well after a few days of tracing wires, checking fuses and basic exploring, I have come the realization that my interior/dash harness is shot. The previous owner has cut/spliced and basically turn my wire harness into spaghetti. Is there a source for a replacement harness for my interior/dash that will not require a small bank loan to finance. I am really looking for plug and play if I can get away with it. I understand enough about the electrical system to be dangerous but not enough to troubleshot. Any help would be greatly appreciated. 1977 280Z---on its way to becoming a daily driver (I hope)

Vacuum Hose Schematic
Hello All, I have a '77 280z and am looking for a vacuum hose schematic. I have downloaded the 77 shop manual and also the electronic fuel injection guide for the 280z but neither one has a schematic. For some reason that escapes me the previous owner had disconnected various hoses and I have no idea where they go. Thanks. Tom
