Would the rod/disk thing not work when the car was on, and wok when it was off? Cuz thats whats happening.
  2. brutesque replied to brutesque's post in a topic in Help Me !!
I did bleed the master cylinder before I put it on. I may have pulled the rod. I think I bumped it, but it looked fine, not that I really checked. So I would just have to put the disk back in place? That might be it...

Well, I can hear some kind of squeal-ish sound coming from the hose that comes up from the booster on the side closest to the outside of the car, that connects to a hose leading to the engine. There is a metal connector thing that connects them, and they are held to the body of my car with a bracket. black hoses, about an inch in diameter. I dont think Im leaking fluid, Ive never noticed low fluid levels. I have the Haynes manual, no factory book. There is a possibility the metal thing making the noise is the brake check valve?? The squeal is fairly quiet, I cant hear it with the engine running.

How can I fix it? replace tubes..?? I am a total noob at auto repairs.

Ok, I was noticing my brakes were spongy and everything, so I asked around and decided it was the master cylinder. My pedal wopuld go to the floor, etc. So I replaced the master cylinder. And before I bled the system, I wanted to see how the brakes were doing, and they were doing the same thing. Slowly go to the floor with kind of a squealing sound. I figured that maybe I needed to turn the car on for it to work, and the pedal went to the floor with zero resistence. So I bled the system. And nothing has changed except my filthy brake fluid is now more clear with the addtition of fresher fluid. The brakes dont work at all. I had someone push the brakes and I narrowed the squealing sound to the tube that comes up from the brake booster, where it meets another. That SEEMS to be where the noise is coming from. But I could be wrong. What could this be? This is my daily driver, and Id like to be driving her again =(((
  6. I have an '83 280ZX and I am going to college. I have the option of driving her from Arkansas to Utah, or putting her on a train. I drove my car an hour straight going to a car show, and she did decently, but Im not sure she would make it the full trip this far. Would it be a good idea to drive her or would it be a better idea to ship her? What are the dangers of shipping her? If it were a better, or cheaper, to drive her, what do I have to do to prepare her for that kind of a trip? And what should I bring or make sure I can afford when I get on the road? Any imput would be great =D

zbane-- I just bought a new battery a few months ago. And my water pump was what caused me to have to get a new radoator . Would I have to replace the alternator, or is it repairable? boktx-- I have only had the pulsing issue twice, not every time I brake. When it happened to you, did it start out not very often and gradually get worse?

My '83 280 zx nonturbo has been having some problems lately. Within the past couple of weeks, at lights, my car will act like it wants top turn off in a pulsing motion. But when I drive, this doesnt happen. It has only happened twice. Also, my voltage meeter has been going crazy. The needle just goes in and out of the red area, over the 14 volt range. I have a leak somewhere in my antifreeze lines or heater core or something, and I was wondering if the antifreeze leaking on wires could cause this. Also, I have been haing issues with my brakes. Occationally, it wont catch, and I stop, I just have to go much farther down on the break pedal. My dad said I would probably need a new master cylinder. Could this be anything else? Id apreciate anyones input into my situation. I have already replaced the radiator, rotors, and other misc things. My parents dont think its a good idea that I have this car, and if I can fix these problems myself, theyre fine with me keeping her, but if I have to keep taking her to the shop, theyre going to make me sell her. And that is the last thing I want.

Yes, its antifreeze. I am not exactally car savvy . Thank you for the help! I was afraid I was going to have some terrible problems to fix... I figured it was some kind of hose, but im glad its not too serious.

My car hals been leaking some kind of fluid on the inside of my car for a while now, and I thought it was power steering fluid, and I thought I had fixed it with some stop-leak fluid. But it is still leaking. And I just caught it dripping, and its bright green. Its leaking under the dash on the passengers side. How can I fix this?

NW Arkansas... I kow of 4 in my area. A white 90's Z, a red and a white 70's Zs, and a bright yellow one that got towed from the Wal Mart parking lot here after sitting ther for 2 months. That yellow one was my first exposure to Z cars... And I fell in love <3 And, how could I forget, my own silver 280 ZX 2+2 non-turbo.
  12. I have updated information. I called my dad and had him help me test a few things. The squeaking has gone, it was the power steering being low on fluid. The "thud" is more like a whirring sound, almost like something is hitting something, but only in drive and reverse, not neutral or park. My fan is crooked-looking, which makes a sound, also, and may part of this sound. One more thing, the sound is pretty quiet. I can barely hear it over my engine.
  13. I dont know if it is the pump, Im just going by the opinion of several guys at an auto parts place. Ill check the pump, but Im not quite sure what some of what you guys just said actually means. What is the idler pulley? How long will this process take? My dad is visiting soon and can help, but we were also going to change my rear brakes ahd hes only going to be here for 2-3 days. I really have no experience in cars, which is why I have so many questions.
  14. Should I still flush the cooling system? So just not drive her at all until I get it fixed?

I just got the rotors replaced on my 280 ZX 2+2 non-turbo, and on the way home from the shop, she started making some bad noises, and I pulled over and called Advanced Auto, who said it may be my power steering fluid. I immeditely went there and filled her up. She still made part of the noise (I guess it was part power steering fluid problems) and I asked them what it could be. They said it was my water pump and that I should flush my cooling system and see if it helps. I know Z cars have problems with their water pumps, so I was expecting it. But will it actually help to flush the system? Its making kind of a cluning noise, kind of, and kind of squeaky... Can I drive her? Will it make the problem worse? I havent since I got her home last night, an dI have a substitute car for a couple of days, but after I flush the system, can I make it a week or so, however long it takes to get the part and get it installed?
