  1. Frank, If you end up with the ZX box for the trip out here, we can help you get into a standard 5 speed when you get here, should you not like the gearing in the ZX box.
  2. Steve has owned this car for several years now. It and several others have been in the way. The race cars are becoming higher priority, hence the storage re-shuffle......
  3. Didn't anticipate needing to take pictures of a silver Z that looks exactly like, well I suppose, many early silver Zs. Patina, patina, patina, if you know what I mean. Steve also has, if memory serves, the first Z that came through Jack Scoville's dealership. And Al Epperly (Steve's dad) did a lot of work on Jack's championship winning roadster. The Epperlys have had their hooks into the Datsun scene clear back when......
  4. Swung by ZTherapy's shop today and was presented with what was actually a barn find in the #30 car. It was getting a bath before going back into storage in another building. A real piece of history. Pretty cool. In another shop, new body work was being fitted to a vintage IMSA car one of the fellows recently found and is returning to origional livery....... Carry on.....
  5. The 3 or 4 screw deal is merely the number of screws holding the dome on. Your 70 carbs are more than likely 4 screw and the 72 carbs are 3 screw. At least that's what they would have been from the factory. The factory air cleaner is a fine, very functional piece of gear. It has good air horns built in, both carbs draw from a common air cource and cooler supply air can be had through the "snorkle" from forward of the engine heat.
  6. Tim, Understand that these guys wont let you go for long without pictures. Just seems to be the way it is. nyuck nyuck Oh, and while your Z was away, those carbs got all wore out.......
  7. First step in my mind would be to do the local radiator shop thing to evaluate the rebuildability of your radiator. Why would you question the value of a new tranny mount?
  8. You finished second to them? That's all you need to say. Let everyone else figure out the details.....
  9. Sometimes my responses may come off sounding too obvious but I find myself thinking in terms of "who may be reading this that may not be as up to speed on our services" as you the "learned" ones. Call me and we can work out the particulars. For enough money, etc etc etc
  10. Boy is this timely. A different venue from a rally but spomething for you up east to follow up on perhaps. www.loringtimingassociation.com covers a young effort for land speed runs a the old Loring Air force Base at Limestone Maine. It's like a bazillion acres of 9 foot thick concrete that was poured for a heavy bomber base and has since shut. This place is amazing how many cold war dollars it sucked up over the years only to become a weed farm now. Flew in and out of there back in the 60s to pick up supplies when I was stationed in Canada for a year. Concrete for just about as far a one could see.... Gotta be some Datsun records laying around on the ground out there. You guys just need to go get 'em.... If that link doesn't work, just do search . Didn't mean to hijack your thread richard.
  11. Just to freshen up this topic, our carb pieces are run through a high impact machine polish which is designed to close up the cell structure of the aluminum replicating the finish when new. It is not our intention to change the look of the product by doing a chrome polish. We'll leave chrome polish to the owners.
  12. A mechanic can check fill level easily enough. 90 wt gear lube for a standard. One chamber only. Hope BFE doesn't turn out to be your new home. Bummer....
  13. Bring your camshaft by for a visit..... Nyuck nyuck
  14. Just playing Devil's advocate here, but what's wrong with the speed and power you have now? Have you got compression figures on that engine? How many miles on the engine. Hot rod stuff you might throw at a half worn out engine probably wouldn't be money well spent..... A freshen-up (rings, bearings, valve job) might be the best bang for your buck at the moment. At least you'd be getting what there is to be had from the 2.8 in a form that would be drivable. And you guys thought I was going to suggest he needs new carbs, huh?
  15. Aw, the mukluk telegraph. 'tis a wonderful thing, is it not?
  16. Unless you're putting out some serious torque, fifth (~25% over) will be worthless on anything other than flat ground and you'll be rowing back and forth between 4th and 5th just to keep the RPMs in a usable range.
  17. I just measured a long shaft dog leg five speed and it as well measures 31". Soooo length and maybe driveline length shouldn't be an issue and shifter placement should be good. Now against a tranny in your 510 pile just check bell housing bolt spacing and orientation (because some applications tipped the engine some) and pull your driveline and count splines on your tail shaft. One thing I love about Datsuns is that they standardized many many things one model to the next.
  18. We sent out an impromptu call for Datsun owners to show up at the shop for a photo to go with a birthday card. Twenty two cars and trucks showed up on a Monday week before last.
  19. Have you got the JUST SUs DVD? If not, save everyone a whole lot of time and get it. Two initial things to check for before ripping into float settings. Make sure the center linkage captures the linkage on both carbs and 2 with the choke lever released make sure there is slack in the cables whaere they attach to the carb linkages.
  20. Sounds like you're pressurizing the coolant system with combustion air from a cylinder which, in turn is popping the lid off. You might pull plugs and see if one is wet. Once you turn the engine off the pressure in the coolant sytem may force coolant back into the offending cylinder thus rendering the coolant sytem after awhile, pressureless. Aging head gaskets between iron blocks and aluminum heads (different expansion and contraction rates) just flat go away over time.
  21. We called an impromptu gathering earlier this week at the shop for a picture taking opp to send along. Got a robust turnout of 22 Datsuns of various models.
  22. You got the final filters in the float bowl lids cleaned out, correct?
