  1. Bob, My suggestion for you would be to call and talk to Vince at Senik Paint in Costa Mesa about his input on this subject.
  2. Have to ask the obvious. What are the return springs on the carbs hooked to?
  3. A small point but I would make a wire loop affair to hook into the sharp edged hole in the heat sheild. The sharp edged hole in the heat sheild will then over time saw thru the wire loop instead of your spring. Cheap and easy to form another wire loop.
  4. Glen, When you say "runs badly", describe what that is like.....
  5. I concur with Lance, Testing an engine that has sat for 20 years without airing it out some, is folly. Essentially what you have is a 10 year old 260 which has been sitting. If the box is sound and you didn't pay a bazillion dolars for it,`the basis from which to start is good. Any car that has been sitting that long is going to take a lot of TLC to get systems up and running and past the dry rot stage. There are several good threads on here covering the how to's on all that.

Biggest All Datsun 2 day event in the Northwest..... Go to www.datsunsnw.org for all the latest detail and registration information. Come join in the fun.....
  7. Clutchdust, Sorry to hear of the dial-in problems you're having with your SUs. There really isn't all that much on an SU to FIGHT....... They are the world's simplest carbs, but when they are worn out they can be a bear to keep tuned.
  8. Mike, Stay in touch with www.datsunsnw.org for club doings. Will have Datsun Driving CANBY Fun '06 info up here shortly.... Bruce Palmer
  9. Meet at Tonkin NISSAN Wilsonville OR 11 AM depart 11:30. Lunch enroute. All models of Datsuns welcome. www.datsunsnw.org for details.
  10. Boy, is this pricing thing all relative or what? Was talking with a friend of mine the other day who happens to be going through a roadster at the moment and he told me it costs about $1800 for the front end parts for a Datsun Roadster these days. That's just parts!! $200 for ball joint make a set of $600 carbs look pretty cheap. Oh well...... Happy New Year Y'all
  11. .. and buzz up to Canby in June For Datsun Driving CANBY Fun '06 June 10 & 11. Details to follow.
  12. Uh, guys let me clear up another misconception. I am not the owner of ZTherapy, just really good friends with the owners. I have managed over the last 30 years or so to put several hundred thousand miles on Hitachis and SUs before that. My other business interests allow me the time to talk to customers and I hope to bring some counsel to the customers with carb related issues. I can help some of you make intelligent decisions, Steve Epperly is the one who can make these carbs work and a Z car haul the mail. Thanks for the promotion but I like things just the way they are.... When I go past what I can say with a degree of certainty I'll kick the inquiry to Steve. As long as our last job continues to sell our next job we feel we have to be doing something right......
  13. I'm not sure what all the reference about the roller bearings is saying, but I just want to pass on the fact that we are still using bearings. They are a far superior design to what the former owner used, but are bearings none the less. We are also having a write up put together highlighting results of needle comparisons done on Steve's Z last summer. Been in the hands of an engineering student at Oregon State for compilation but he keeps saying something about school work getting in the way...................... Now if we could just get this data aquisition equipment to write a report....
  14. NWDOA is coming back to life. The remnants of the old club kept the Bluelake Park deal going for a lot of years and with the advent of the move to Canby and the romping turn out last year we decided to re-kindle NWDOA and make it into a club run by the members for the members and to act as the umbrella organization for the annual Datsun Driving Canby Fun event. Second meeting and election of officers will be Nov 16 at the Clackamas County Fair ground at 6:30. All Datsun owners are welcome. First year dues are only $18 for calendar '06, so ya beat that with a stick. Information on the club will be updated at www.nwdoa.org so check in often and by all means come build the Z car presence......
  15. Well said, When you stop by the shop I'll buy ya a Grape NEHI....... Wonder what happens if I crank on this little gizzy? Don't lose your head to save a minute. You need your head, your brains are in it. Burma Shave 1947
  16. That's why when you pull the choke on to get it to run it's like screwing the nozzle down at least a couple of turns. Get those nozzles cranked down a couple of turns and see what happens. We send everything out of here set at 2 1/2 turns down and I'd be interested in knowing how many cars are out there never haveing been moved from there. Just a good square one position for most applications. A tweak up or down is about all that is needed in most cases. Any major tweaking is often an indication of something else amiss......
  17. The black sooty stuff is rich. Try that again after making sure the chokes are off and not stuck part way on. A build up of varnish can cause them to stick thus making all the other settings off. The JUST SUs video and DVD is a real handy tool for understanding the whats and wherefores of these really simple carbs. You may want to check out the tune up video for the other engine related issues.
  18. If you have the standard needle and seat setup with the internal spring, turning the lid over will give a setting where the float will be way too low. You need to hang the float vertically while blowing gently into the fuel inlet tube. Move the float toward the lid and you'll feel when the shut off happens. Not allowing for that internal spring will screw things up to the point you will be found whimpering in the corner....... Question: How does the car run with the carb nozzles set at 2 1/2 turns from the full up position? I don't think you were that far off from the start, that you could not have adjusted your way out of it by adjusting the metering nozzles. What needles are you running? Where ever you end up with the nozzle you're going to want the fuel level in the nozzle (float bowl) 1/16" or so below the top of the nozzle.
  19. Arne, If you are up this way, feel free to stop by the shop and kick a tire or two. Steve is normally there weekends playing cars so no big deal if it's not on a week day. Oh yes, and check out www.nwdoa.org for the rekindling of the Datsun club in Oregon..... Bruce Palmer ZTherapy Salem OR 503-587-9800
  20. Miles, Call me tomorrow and I'll put you in touch with the owner of ZTherapy. He is very adept at ferriting out "carb" problems which in most cases turn out not to be. 503-587-9800
  21. Dan, Because of the format of the fuel nozzle, you have 38mm Datsun (Hitachi) carbs. The fuel return fitting was Roadster I believe. I think the roaster had mirror image carbs though. I need to spend more time at the shop. Hard to do when trying to shepherd a couple of businesses along.
  22. Hard to tell from looking but I can say they are 38mm from the 2 bolt mount. If they are Hitachis (metric) they came on either SSS 1600 JDM 510s or 1600 roadsters. If they are 1 1/2" SUs they could have come off anything. They look very Hitachiiiiii.....
  23. Sum total of the multiple fuel pump discussion, SUs wont handle more than about 3 pounds of fuel pressure. 51 thousand miles, those carbs are just getting broken in. Our JUST SUs video is a great tool for helping go through them cleaning them up and looking for anything out of whack. We also have a needle upgrade that helps bring them to life as well.
  24. Chris, How would this work as a change in the ZTherapy owners manual......? "If after installing your ZTherapy carbs the engine continues to cut-out on right hand turns while autocrossing...... Run only autocrosses with left hands turns." I will put this before the board. Nyuck nyuck When the snow finally melts and you get a chance to run, let us know how the right turn problem is..............
  25. Carl, I was visualizing the manly "Armstrong" brakes on the 510 when talking about the firewall escape route. Sorry lost my head..... and something else.... er, can't remember what......
