hatch rust?
^ Thank you very much for the comment. i've read that it was common and just wanted to see how much work it was to have it repaired. sounds like around $1000 for labour/materials? does that sound accurate?

hatch rust?
well i'm looking at a 2nd Z for my wife (i'm not letting go of the 280z keys) and its a '72 that is immaculate looking from the pics BUT has one spot of rust on the rear hatch near the latch. i guess its not on the hatch door itself but where it contacts the body...anyway i'm sure you know what i mean. what kind of repair cost could one estimate for just this area? the car is otherwise a FL car, VIN HLS3056308, '72 240Z, 4spd with L26 motor this is the best pic I have of the area in question, rear passanger side

New to Datsun 280Z w/ problem
for the pullies what i've done on other cars is pull them off and put one on your finger and spin it. if it makes noise or feels notchy the bearings are toast and it'll need to be replaced. very common on my old car (grand prix) for them to go.

New to Datsun 280Z w/ problem
i'd check the bearings on the pulley's...

Do people notice you in your classic Z on the road?
Its a head turner alright. i'd say i get someone to give me the thumbs up or rubber neck the car at least once per drive. when i drove the car from FL to ontario I couldn't keep track of the # of people noticing the car.

i'm addicted...
ok so my wife and i have had our '76 280Z for almost a year (won on ebay on christmas eve last year) and I'm itching to buy another one already. i just love this car, its crazy. Something about it just makes me smile every time I see it. Anyway is it bad I want another one? With how the dollar is trading right now its hard to not buy one... i just would need somewhere to store it as we have 3 cars as it is and our driveway/garage is full already... :stupid: i think i need to move to a house with more garage space.

'80 280zx Rhd ? Hgs130002146
I have looked and tried to find the decoding for the VIN of this car but I can't find any info on it. This car 1980 RHD 280ZX is on ebay right now, very cheap thus far, and I was wondering what can be found out from the VIN above? Link to auction http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=230187076332&ssPageName=ADME:X:RTQ:MOTORS:1123 I'd be interested in it to have a 2nd Z car, the RHD is just a bonus. also is there a way to know what rear end would be in this car or the final drive ratio?

How often do you see 240-Z's on the road?
I've seen a total of 3 since I've owned this car (not including the Ontario Z fest), one in 1993 when I lived in Nova Scotia and thats it. I've talked to 10+ people who say they've got one at home but not on the roads.

Anyone here drive thier Z during the Winter ?
No hope in hell of my Z seeing snow... canada is all i have to say... its bad enough right now with the temps are sub 10*C and my tires act like hockey pucks on the pavement. Today might be the last day out for the old girl. I'm actually putting my snows on the daily drivers today (my '06 civic and my wife's 04 accord coupe) so the Z will see the afternoon sunshine while I use her room (garage) for the tire swaps.

Im stuck in a pickle, need help
i bought my datsun in florida and i'm from canada. when the transaction was done i took my bill of sale, old title and the car to the DMV. I said I bought the car and would like a temporary permit for the car to drive it home. $5 later I had my temporary permit and was on my way. I didn't get a FL title for the car in my name, I simply drove the car home (to canada from FL) and when I got home I transfered the title to an ONTARIO title in my name. I don't see why you need to register the car in purchasing state if you are just going to take it home and re-register it. I had NO issues by the way driving it 1300miles through a whack of states with the temp permit on the rear window. the only time i was asked about no plates on the car was at the canadian boarder and i explained my situation. i'm not sure if my random story helps or not but i'm just wondering why you need to register the car twice is all...

If this guy gets $20,000 I am selling mine lol
i wouldn't sell my Z for less than $15,000-20,000 as it sits now... and mine is in equivalent shape to that (better in the engine bay by far). to each their own. it takes a certain person to be able to appreciate a NICE CLEAN Z. Mine was appraised at $15,000 locally, but as said above you can ask all you want its what a buyer will pay is what its real "worth" is. for less than that I'd rather just keep the car as I couldn't buy/make a nicer car for that kind of money.

does this seat look like it'll fit? measurements
Pictures of the above seats install are now available. Please keep in mind these WILL be recovered.. Well with a little fab work and a whole lot of luck I was able to get both recaro's into the Z this weekend. the drivers side was a PITA due to a drivetunnel bulge that wasn't on the passanger side, but all in all I can drive the car and the seat adjusts enough that amanda can get comfortable in the driverside no problems. The passanger side was a piece of cake, first try bolt right in with my 'adapters' which was a good start before i found out about the tunnel issues.. needless to say here are the pics, and yes they will be recovered to match the car. we are thinking black leather to replace the grey and red micro-suede inserts There are no issues with them touching the door panels, nor the handbrake on the passanger side and the head rests are JUST inside of the roll bar when reclined far enough.

How much is too much?
I bought my Z just under a year ago and spent $8k USD on it. '76 280Z. Fully restored, undr carriage spotless, battery tray entact, new interior (dash cap due to crack though). rebuilt motor, upgraded rear end and 5spd. wheels, etc etc. fully done car. daily driver quality if I wasn't in sales and driving 30,000miles a year (or if i wasn't in canada..) I think I got a helluva deal on it, had it appraised locally at $15,000cdn. It all depends how much you want done and what you are willing to do yourself. I personally can't do body work or paint so I paid a premium for a car I knew I wouldn't have to do that right off the bat, I can deal with interior/stereo/motor if I want to and thats what I'm happy with. to each their own. I am happy as a pig in $^!# with this car and so is my wife. It makes me happy to see it in my garage and even happier when I am out driving. That, to me is quality of life and that is priceless in my eyes. Buy it to enjoy it, not to hate it for what its not. I refuse to start something on this car that will frustrate me and take away the pleasure of the car itself. Happy Z'ing

Ever feel like an Idiot?
Been there done that... i did a top end rebuild on my grand prix (cam swap, ported heads, etc etc) and i had it all buttoned back up and ready to fire it over... i had my wife watching the engine bay ready to signal fire's or anything exciting for me to kill it... of course the anticipation of this moment i was excited, heart racing, key in ignition, turn it to fire it up... nothing, no click, no fuelp pump nothing. my heart sank... walked to the front, my wife was standing there with a grin on her face and pointing to the battery that had the negative still not attached. what a dumbass i was... put it on, and it fired right up and scared the $^!# out of my wife, open headers in a single garage..hehehe good times

Seat test fitting...
oh and I'll clearly be re-upholstering them with black/red leather instead of the grey/yellow that they are now... but not till I get my door panels so they can all match properly... in due time

Seat test fitting...
Well this afternoon I picked up used Recaro seats and this evening I pulled out one stock datsun seat to do a test fit. As you can see the pictures they are similiar in size to the stock seats, just a tad wider and a tad taller not to mention a helluva lot more side bolster and the fit... well honestly not that bad at all... i'll need to fab a new bracket but fit is pretty close all in all it doesn't hit on the door or on the console but I do have a rollbar that it sits up against if I recline it a lot. My wife has given the passanger side her approval so I figure I'll fab up what I need this weekend if I get the time.
