  1. Thanks Arne for clarifying about not using the starter. I never do that so I just assumed no one else would. Why is it best to just turn the tranny and not the motor? I'm curious. Might turn the motor the wrong direction? I always am looking to learn more. Jon
  2. Good luck, let me know how it goes. Tomorrow I put some Rust Bullet on a few spots in the engine bay. And then get it ready for some touch-up paint. By mid week I hope the be putting the l28 into my 240z
  3. Yes, your input shaft may not have mated with the pilot bearing and is hung up.
  4. Is your gap even all the way around? Have you turned over the motor, or put the tranny in gear and us the drive shaft to turn and try and make it match up.
  5. If I lived closer I would check this one out. Maybe a good price at auction sale. http://seattle.craigslist.org/skc/car/636152620.html
  6. Good find. It looks good enough to keep it true to its Z heritage. Lots of work ahead, that is one of the things I enjoy, so have fun and good luck. Jon
  7. I used a tan upholstry kit and recovered mine. But I must say that my old butt would like kinder seats. His30 seats do look good with the tan. Jon
  8. It looks different from the one that came on my 73. If you want, I can go over to my shop and take a picture. Jon
  9. I tend side with those that learn the hard way. Jon :stupid:
  10. Sounds like a good deal. Besure and post some pictures. and have fun with your Z.
  11. My 1980 5pd has the same problem. I have to do a slow shift from 1 to 2nd, if I shift to fast it jams a bit. My friend, who runs a tranny shop, went through it for me and replaced a few bearings, said that the no 2 synchronizer was just a little worn, I wished now that I would have had him change it.
  12. I only know that for my 73 Z, with a 1980 5spd, a 4.11 rearend, and 195 70 14's; used a red 20 tooth cog. My speedometer match my GPS unit readout. I would like to hear from other members. Jon
  13. You need a white, 19 tooth cog for the correct reading. http://datsunzgarage.com/engine/. (page 7)

My Z has to sit alone in my shop, its whole drive train is out (all parts zipped locked and labeled). I'm taking a look at the r180, trying out another 5spd and putting in a f54 l28. But their she is frozen to the blocks, I have to get ready for my commercial fishing season in Alaska. I have about a mile of gillnets to hang (8 inches at a time) they have to be on the barge at the end of April. Alas there is no joy in Walla Walla.

Welcome, some of this site's members have a wealth of Z smarts and info stored in their heads. It would take me 2 life times to match them. Enjoy.
  16. That is the way I've pulled the front cover on 3 trannys. Jon

Another thing I'm really surprised at is the number of people that see my Z and come over and say that they had a Z years ago, or a friend, uncle or whatever. They always smile and say how they loved that Z way back when, and then tell me how much they like seeing my Z around town. Last month I had 3 sheriff's cars and a state patrol behind my Z on the side of the road with their lights flashing. I would have paid good $$$ to have had a picture. Oh the fun I could have had with that picture. But the true story is that I was 1st on scene at a motorcycle wreck and enforcement parked just behind my car. I don't dare speed cuz they know my Z from the fire dept calls.

Welcome, nice looking Z's. This club has been a big and I mean BIG help in my Z car project.

Here in Walla Walla Washington, I never see another 240z. 2 or 3 280's and a few zx's. mostly parked, gathering rust and dust. This fall at our "Wheeling Walla Walla" car show there was 350 cars on display. Not one Z of any type. This fall, I think I'll park my Z next to the 30 plus corvett's that make the show.

Great find, I think you you will be pleased with your Z's performance with a 4.11. This week I'm going to swap out my l24 for a 1983 l28. I'm also going to take my 4.11 r180 out and check it over, it has a whine that I think may be the back pinion bearing starting to give me trouble.

I got the r180/4.11 from a guy who said he bought it from the Bob Sharp racing shop years ago. I have no way to document his story, but it is a 4.11. I thought that I had a 1981 5spd tranny. but when i compare my real life rpms to speed. It looks like I may have a 1979 5spd. Today I drove to town and I got 18, 32, 45, 57,and 75 mph at 3500 rpms as I ran the gears. This matches the geocities transmission calculator for a 79 5spd with a 4.11. A 1981 to 83 is shown to run at 21, 35, 49, 65,and 87 mph at 3500 rpms. I do like the 4.11 as it really wakes up my Z. I have a 1983 5spd kicking around and I just might put it in when I put in f54 l28 that I have been working on for my Z. Jon
  22. Sounds like a leak in the brake booster or vacuum line to the booster.
