  1. 24 Ounces, Welcome to Classic Z. You will find a wealth of information on this site as well as a bunch of guys that are happy to share their knowledge on these great cars. One suggestion is learn to use the search function as most everything has been discussed on this site at some point. I have a 72 240Z with VIN# 70756 and 3/72 for the build date. Your car looks very clean to start with, you are lucky!
  2. If you plan to use standard overhead doors and want to put a lift in, I strongly suggest having the tracks for the doors go straight up towards the ceiling. Then you will not have to worry about the door hitting the car when the lift is all the way up. I does not cost much more if you order the doors with the high clearance tracks. I have a lift and it is the best $2000.00 I spent. It saves your back when ever you need to work on the car, even if it is to wax or clean it. I raise the car several feet and work on the side of the car standing straight up. It makes a huge difference. I have a 30,000 btu Hot Dawg natural gas heater and love it. It is vented to the outside. It is cheap to run also. Like everyone else is saying, if you have the land, build the biggest garage you can afford. You will never regret it. Keep us updated and post lots of pictures. :classic:

I too watched the show and was very dissapointed in how they modified the two cars. Having watched this show once before I had prepared myself that they were going to do some sort of extreme builds. So I guess I set my expectations pretty low before the show started. Having done that, it was worse that what I expected. I agree the opening comments when they revealed the cars were 240Z's were disturbing to me. We should start an email campaign to the shows producers and let them know how we felt about this particular episode and the disservice they did to a great car. Off topic, but Chasing Classic Cars on HD channel is a great car show. It is a genuine car enthusiast show and the host Wayne Carrini is a great down to earth guy. The show airs at 10:00 PM EST on Tuesdays.

Well I went back and looked around the site. This company claims this bag is for inside use only. I am positive John stored his car outside for more than a year. Perhaps he had a waterproof canopy over it with the car in the bag inside the canopy. Best bet would be to PM GNOSEZ.

I do not know how much you spent on your paint job but would it not be worth spending the money to rent a storage unit to protect your investment in the paint job? Just my two cents. One other alternative you could consider is getting a Carbag: http://www.carbag.com/index.html The president of our club stored his car outdoors in one of these bags for an extended period of time. The main advantage is that it seals the car to be air tight which keeps moisture and rodents out of your car. He is on this site, his ID is GNOSEZ, you could send him a PM. I am sure he would be happy to share his experience with this product. Good luck!

I agree with Dennis in that there were too many early Z's sold by Datsun. If any of you watch Chasing Classic Cars on the Discovery HD channel, you know the star of the show, Wayne Carinni. He is a player in the high end collector car market and deals with many cars that fetch 7 figures at all the high end auctions. His shop is located in Portland CT which is 90 minutes from my house. I drove my 72 240Z to one of his monthly cars and coffee meet in October. I had a chance to talk to him about the value of the Z's and their long term investment potential. He basically said the same thing that Dennis said, "the problem with these Z cars is that they made too many of them". Because of that he does not see the early Z cars taking off in value like many other high end collector cars. I even asked him if he felt the low vin# 69 Z's would appreciate in value. He said he did not think they would because of the numbers originally made. He said the cars that command the highest prices are those that were built in very low numbers with few survivors left. He did make the comment that there are not to many 240Z's left in the condition that my car was in. That statement alone made me feel pretty good even if I can't convince my wife that buying more Z cars would be good investment. Here is a link to Wayne Carinni's site: http://www.f40.com/ Great discussion thought.:classic:
  8. Is that color a repaint?

I purchased a set of seat covers from Mike and they are top quality. His supplier is the same company that produced the seat covers for the Vintage Z restorations that Nissan commissioned in 1997. Mike is also a standup guy as the other posters have said.

Ditto on the off topic request for a mast!! Happy Turkey Day! Let's all be thankful that Mr. K had the vision to build the Z car!
  11. Jim, that is awesome! I've got to stop at the Borders book store tomorrow to pick up a copy. Congratulations

Can the mods put a sticky on this thread? This is great. Thanks Obewon

Edit: Oh yea, price. Umm, kinda embarrassed to say. But it only put a 500 dollar dent in our pockets, I paid half of that. It was a real lucky find. You got a steal for a very original car. Having the warranty book and card is quite a find! These cars in nice original condition are getting harder and harder to find. It will increase in value the most if you keep it original including the original color. Good luck and welcome to the club!

Dude, if she has that look now and you are not even married yet, you're screwed! I know since I have been getting that look for 26 years! Gary's right, you have to learn to ignore that look.
  15. I agree that it is a good idea at times to resurrect these old threads. I did not even notice the original date of this thread but the topic caught my eye. I know that most every subject about early Z cars has been discussed at one time or another on this forum and you can use the search function. If you are not consciously looking for something specific you would miss out on some of these great old informative threads. Moderators, I have a suggestion. Could we archive all these great how to threads in one area and have categories such as engine, tranny, suspension, wheels and hubcaps, seats, dash, console, etc to organize them in. That would make it easy for anyone that wanted to review all the great how to threads from the past. Perhaps you could use the rating system to determine which threads qualify to be added to the How To Section. Just my two cents! Thanks,
  16. Hey Dave, Do you mind sharing where Hagerty sent you for a replacement 72 bumper? Thanks, Marc
  17. I am not looking for any parts but I wanted to say that this is part of why it is great to own a Z car. Its guys like you offering up parts for free to other Z car owners to help them out. You should be commended for doing this.
  18. Hi Andrew, As I posted earlier in this thread. I installed a rebuilt rack from Carsterring.com this summer. I was very satisfied with the quality. I put 2500 miles on the car in July driving to the ZCON in Nashville and it handled great. Make sure you replace the rubber bushings that secure the rack to the front cross member.
  19. Julio, The car looks awesome. Nice color and wheel combination. Enjoy!
  20. Question, His listing on eBay is Buy It Now for $75.00. Is that for a pair of elbows or just one?
  21. This is direct from Hagerty's website Q&A section: What are your usage restrictions/guidelines? Simply put, we want you to enjoy your classic vehicle. While there are some restrictions in the policy, you’re covered for pleasure use, whether it's a drive on a gorgeous summer day, a trip to the ice cream shop, attending club events or going to shows. If you have specific questions about usage, especially if you own a newer vehicle (generally 1990 and newer), we're happy to discuss them with you. Can I race my car? Our program is not designed to provide coverage for vehicles while they’re being raced. However, we do offer off-track coverage for motorsports vehicles. For more details, see Motorsports.

Leonard, Contact Mike McGinnis at Banzai Motorworks. He has been working on Z's for 40 years and his shop does concourse restorations of early Z cars. He sells the same soft trim as Les and is very knowledgeable about what was correct for these cars. He has been a huge help to me with my 72 and I have purchased many parts from him. You can reach him at (301) 420-4200 His website link: http://zzxdatsun.com/ He has a lot of parts listed on his site.
  23. Hi Jared, I have my 72 240Z insured with Hagerty for an agreed policy of $30K. Last year I was covered at $25K and I increased the policy to $30K when I renewed this year. They did not give me any hassles to increase the coverage. They had pictures of the car from the previous year and all they asked for was a list of the work that I had done on the car in the last year. I have the highest liability limits $250K - $500K on this policy because of the Umbrella policy I have. My premium for $25K was $261.00 and it went up to $292.00 for $30K. I highly recommend going with an agreed value policy rather than a conventional cash value policy.

Jay, If some of us like to keep our Z's mostly stock it does not mean we drive them like a Model T. I like to drive my car fast. I put 2500 miles on the car driving to the convention in Nashville. Our average cruise speed was 75 mph and I pushed my car well beyond that speed a half a dozen times. Three of us also drove the Tail of the Dragon in North Carolina on the trip home. There were no Model T's on that road! Most Z owners love their car because of the performance and handling and joy they are to drive. There is no reason why a stock Z's can't be driven hard.

I drove my car down to Nashville to attend my first national Z Convention and entered my car to be judged in the Street Modified class. I am shocked to learn that only one car entered the stock class. When I began the refresh of my 72 240Z three years ago, I made a conscious decision that I would not bring the car back to 100% stock as defined by the ZCCA judging standards, I want my car to be 95 to 98% stock with the exception of some things like the slotted wheels, side stripes, polished aluminum in the engine bay, which I choose based on my personal preference. Having said that, in my opinion, there were many 240 Z's being judged at the convention that could have, or perhaps should have been entered in the stock class. I agree with Rich that I have a lot more to say but will wait to see where this thread goes.
