i have a '72 240z. this is my first restoration project ever, so i am teaching myself how to do nearly everything. but i have this one wire that comes up out of the bundle of wires on the right side of the car and it just ends..it doesn't connect to anything. i have a picture of an engine bay with that wire and it is attacked to something that looks like maybe an engine compartment light..? im not sure.. in the picture, the.."thing".. that i am confused with is just to the left of the suspension in the engine bay. the link: http://www.angelfire.com/sk3/jjgajewski/bzngnl.jpg

My 72 240z has an electrical problem. there is a short that is making my battery drain, the headlights don't work, and the blinkers don't work (unless i hit the hazard light switch, then only the rear ones and just recently i got the right front one to work as well..but im pretty sure it's just a faulty switch). the biggest problem though is that i think my alternator doesn't work, im not positive, but when i jump the car, it'll run for around 5 minutes, so my theory is that the jump gives it enough juice for that amount of time, but then the car will die, im thinking because the alternator isn't recharging the battery. my real question is when i was driving the car, when i would open the throttle, it loses power; when i let up the RPMs raise, but then pretty soon the car will die. am i right in thinking that the alternator is causing this problem?
  5. no, i don't..
  6. ok, so im not sure if this is what caused it, but today i tried to.."tune my carbs," meaning that i tried to make the mixture right. i twisted it all the way counter clockwise (which i think/hope is lean) and then i turned it two and a half times clockwise (they're stock SU's on my '72 240Z). there is now a bunch of smoke coming out of the exhaust, and when i was driving it i would step on the pedal and it would almost feel like i was engine braking, my car would actually SLOW DOWN when i stepped on the gas.. did i do something wrong? what might have caused my car to do that?

ok, so i've taught myself pretty much everything i know about cars. which is more than some, less than others. i just got a '72 240z and the brakes are bad. they get to about 2 inches from the floor before they engage. i tried bleeding the brakes, except, i could only figure out where the master cylinder bleed screws were. i think it helped a little bit, but that could just be my imagination.. does anybody want to tell me where i would find the individual bleeder screws for each brake? im a little new to the whole car thing, this is my first restoration, so be easy on me please.

well, if this helps at all, it only ran normally for about 3 or 4 seconds and then it started sputtering and it almost sounded like it had just run itself dry.

ok..but if that's the case, i probably won't know what to do to fix it.

i have the origional (i think) SUs in there. i had it running as in the key was in the ignition, motor idling at 900 rpm.

i ran my car ('72 240z..im in the middle of restoring it) for a bit today, but when i turned it off, the engine kept running for about 20 more seconds. i did everything like i normally do, turn the key all the way to off/lock, turned off the fuel pump, and closed the choke, but it's never done this before. can anyone tell me what's wrong?
