  1. the coders are the guys with brains. Take the credit card scanners where you press "Cancel" if you want to make the payment from a debit card. The people that do the dumb stuff wear suits and drive BMWs.

  3. I did a little quick searching for throttle bodies on eBay, using vehicles with big 4-cylinder or 6 cylinder engines (like small trucks.) I assumed ordinary cars and light trucks would have parts not meant for "performance" like the Mustang, and so, would be less expensive The result is that most of the Ford models I researched had the same basic design, according to the year of the vehicle. And surprisingly, the 90s Ford Escort used an AFM that looked a LOT like the one on my L28e! It even had the same number of pins on the connector (it must be a Bosch design or manufacture.) But because it's for a smaller, 4-cylinder engine, the throat looked correspondingly smaller too.
  4. Of course. And for the $150 the person suggests to ship the empty crate, I could go to the cabinette shop and build one heck of a shipping crate myself.

  6. Since we'd like to see something small for the IAC valve, let's see what small fuel-injected engines use. Small engines like on a motorcycle. Outboard engine?
  7. Why not just remove the inlet hose altogether? Just put a small air filter on that nipple. The outlet hose is only a few inches long. It would probably work, but just make a hissing sound.
  8. The modern IAC units are interesting because you can control them to open as much as you like, or not at all. How do you control those? Can I assume there's a stepper motor inside? If so, a small circuit that is temperature-activated or switched by by the driver would work well. You hit the switch before or just after you start the engine, and it idles high for 60 seconds or so, then closes completely. My AAR takes a few minutes to close. The only thing I don't like about the modern ones is that they're so BIG. A 12V solenoid valve is smaller. It ought to be small like the Datsun AAR is.
  9. I just let mine idle while I clean the windows. But first, I push the tail out of the door. If I need to, the foot presses on the gas pedal for a minute. IMO, the AAR had a bad design and use. It only really closes if the car is not moving and the engine is warm, and as soon as you turn off the engine, it opens, no matter how warm the engine is, unless you have the warming plate installed with all the associated coolant hoses. It really needs an insulating cover.

  11. Correct' I don't use the AAR at all. I only use the car in the warmer months, so I don't really need a high idle for warmup. I still have it bolted on, but only for show, because it's highly polished and the associated metal piping is part of the fuel inject harness support/clamp.

I was thinking of getting my dashboard rebuilt, but after reading how difficult it is to ship it across the country, I was wondering if anyone has a shipping box that that is built well enough (like a fiberglass golf case or wooden crate) to accommodate safe shipping more than once, and can be rented. By loaning it out to others, you could recuperate the cost of building something substantial.
  13. You gotta remember that using a bigger throttle won't help any. The nottleneck is the tiny intake valve that is about 1/2 the size of the runner tube, so we are back to the more important problem of a better-flowing cylinder head, which most 'experts' say will never appear. I think the only real advantage to using a different throttle is the possibility of the built-in AAR and an integrated AFM.

  16. I have both problems "removed." I put a small cone filter on the cam cover vent, plugged its connection on the throttle body, and removed the AAR (and covered the hole on the throttle.) You have to change the small cone filter occasionally, but the rest of the things stay clean. It just takes a minute to warm up, so when you get done cleaning the windows, the engine is happy and warm
  17. I like the polite reminders. Guests or newbs see them, and (hopefully) get the idea to look into the older stuff first.
  18. I never thought of it before, but that explains why my intake manifold is all black inside, with burned-on oil residue. There ought to be an inline filter that you can change. On my '78, the air that goes through the AAR comes from the air filter, so will also explain why my AAR was very clean inside.

  22. I got my first return from making my donation to the Bonk team; it was a Bonk Brothers Racing/Datsun team shirt. It'll look cool when I go on drives or to Mid Ohio next year. A matching duffel bag would be a great accessory. Now I'm waiting on my second package with some photos and a signed poster or Mr. Morton.
  23. I forgot the number, but I think it was that you need at least 50 GOOD laps to get the feel of a car, or to get most of the really big kinks out. Then another 100 good laps for the first stage of fine-tuning, etc.
  24. The hard part is getting new clips so you can put the trim piece back on properly, or to put it on properly in the first place. They get twisted, and people say, "No problem. You just twist it back" which is not the right way because after the clips fail the piece gets twisted. Bill- that link you just posted just gets Google links that bring you back to this thread! hahaha
