San Antonio is hosting next year's ZCON. See the video of the track we'll be using for track day.... Here is the ZCON 09 promotional track video for H2R http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UrKyfPJwAEg Track day will be at H2R. Frank

That's one of four Autometer gauges I'm planning on installing in the '70. I've seen other Zs with Autometer stuff and they look pretty nice. I just wish some gauge manufacturer would make combination units that would 1) fit, and 2) have a semi-factory look to them. Frank
  3. Ditto, Dave. My '70 was almost uncontrollable at 85 and above, it seemed. I installed the FG spoiler as shown on my avatar, and at 130 it's as solid as any other car at that speed. It REALLY makes a difference. Frank

Lubbock...ah, the memories.... I took delivery of my Z 15 April 1970 from B&V Motors, out on the traffic circle by the old Red Raider Inn. Good country, even better folks out there. Frank
  5. Yep, Steve, we know all about "swamp coolers.";) Those of us that fly are also familiar with the carb icing phenomenon in piston engined aircraft. In a car, you'll likely not even notice it, but it makes airplanes quit flying. Frank

You're not going to have any problem, with the possible exception of the gendarmes. A straight-piped Z is a delicious thing to hear, isn't it? Frank
  7. Well, you do know how to keep a secret, don't you???:classic:
  8. This sounds like a classic (and serious) vacuum leak. You've identified one source, at the throttle shafts, and there may be others. Have you synch'd the carbs recently? Z Therapy can be of immense benefit to you at this point. Frank

Why don't you tell someone who cares?

You may have just blown a coolant hose, as that volume of white smoke is not normally generated by a head gasket failure. Check it out when it cools down and I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. If you overheated for a looonng time, you could have head damage, so you'll need to check that, too. Frank

I installed a 6 into 2 header, then ran two pipes all the way back, through glasspacks into a stack on the driver's side. Before I replaced the glasspacks about a month ago, the old (35 years) glasspacks provided a sound that I can only describe as delicious. The new ones toned it down considerably, but still give the same general sound. After my next track excursion, the new g-packs should be blown out a bit and sound more like what I really want to hear.... And a muffler shop did everything from the headers back...about $200.

Your info was accurate. I just placed the order. Thanks yet again! Frank

Thanks, Stephen. I'll give it a look. Frank

Well, I dropped the float level in the Mikunis, and while I was wrenching, I plugged in a fuel pressure gauge. 6 psi. I need to get down to 4.5 psi for optimum fuel delivery. Can anyone recommend a fuel pressure regulator and advise on where to find one? Many thanks! Frank

When you get her to the track, Stephen, you'll wonder why you ever keep it under 6K on the street!
  19. I wouldn't assume anything. You would think the levels are correct, but who knows. They could have installed some foam or other packing inside the float bowl to protect the floats/needle from handling damage. I'd check that first. Frank Mikuni-driven L24
  20. Your Z engine shops are in the biz of knowing a lot about Zs. I'd suggest you visit with them about the body work you're going to need done. I'd wager a sizeable jug of scotch that they'd be able to steer you in the right direction. Frank
  21. It is true testament to the vehicle design that cars 35 to 38 years old are still showing taillights to newer, more "modern" sports cars. Is there any way to "bronze" a Z? Frank

Phil Hill was a true American Hero. He achieved fame and success in a sport where Americans had previously fallen short. He will be missed. RIP Frank

Any muffler shop that does any custom work should be able to make what you are looking for. I had a local shop bend pipes to form an over/under configuration exiting on the left side in the normal location. As my set-up is a 6-3-2, it took a bit of mandrel time to get it just right, but it looks good and sounds sweet. Price was acceptable, too. Frank
  25. :dead:Ok, I'm guilty. But after reading the excellent dissertation, I know why I was wrong. Years ago (60?) my dad was overhauling a lawnmower. Stick with me, now. Since the contraption was noisy as all get out anyway, I asked why he needed to put the muffler back on it. His reply is muddled in my memory now but it had something to do with burning/damaging the exhaust valve if cold air(relatively speaking) hit the hot valve. Therefore, the exhaust required a muffler to keep cold air from hitting the valve. That bit of info translated into "backpressure" as I matured and, until now, never put the noggin into gear to examine my thinking. Thanks for the intellectual stimuli. Frank
