Broken waterpump bolt
Ditto to EZ Out failure. They don't work on those small bolts. The bolts are too hard and it's impossible to drill the pilot hole dead center in the bolt. If you have decent stick welding skills, you can "weld it out" by placing a nut over the broken bolt, and welding the nut to the bolt. You'll need to use a small diameter (1/16"), stainless-based electrode (like Eutectic 680CGS or MG 600 - - disclaimer---I used to sell those products and they work quite nicely). Others may work as well. If the bolt is broken off inside the block, you'll need to have great stick-welding skills and recreate the missing portion of the bolt with the welding electrode. Don't weld to the block, though. That'll cost ya! That last scenario is very touchy and rquires excellent welding skills. Definitely NOT for amateurs like most of us. Frank

Do people notice you in your classic Z on the road?
I was anxious to get home Sunday from a week-end of car show and cruise in San Antonio. I was headed north on I-45 from I-10, hitting it pretty good (about 80). I noticed a cop gaining pretty rapidly on me, so I slowed down to just over the limit (65). He got up real close. Gave me a thumbs-up and a wave and off he went. I reciprocated, breathed a sigh of relief and resumed my journey home. Nice guy, that cop! Frank

hesitation/ oil pressure?
Your description sounds a bit like impending vapor lock. I don't see anything particularly out of order with your oil pressure readings...mine drops to 10 psi or a bit less at hot idle. Water temp being a tad high could be anything, but I suspect it may be from a partially clogged radiator since you've address the overtly obvious causes. Have you had it rodded out recently? Overly advanced timing can cause overheating, too, so check that. FWIW Frank

First drive of the year!
This past week-end was a three-day joyfest. I drove my darling Z from Houston to San Antonio on Friday. Caught a few bugs on the way. Saturday was show day at the ZSport.org annual spring car show. I arrived early (7:30), washed the Z and tidied her up nicely. It was cool, ~50 F until about 11. Then my ears got sunburned and it got windy after that. Took second in the "Daily Driver" class. A bit of a disappointment, but what the hey.:tapemouth Sunday dawned bright, clear and cool. The show Zs met at 0900 and began a 110 mile cruise on some of Texas' Hill Country's finest macadam. Up hill and down dale, first right then left. Light traffic. Speeds from 30 to 90. This route could be classified as Frank's Ideal Commute. I really have empathy for you north-dwellers. I get to drive my Z nearly every week (rain being the exception) at least twice, year round. C'mon down. We'd love to have you! Frank

When Your Cars Are Stored...
The PO of my Z stored her for nigh onto 10 years. He did it right. Ten gallons of gas, 5 gallons of Stabil. On blocks, tires off the floor, deflated. New oil, new coolant. Battery out. When he resurrected her, he dumped the oil and coolant. Aired up the tires, new battery. He removed the valve cover and poured a quart directly on the cam. He also emoried any electrical connections he could find in the engine bay and made sure the connections were tight. He removed the coil wire and cranked it over for about 10 seconds to get oil flowing where it needed to be. Plugged the coil wire in and started it. On 10 year-old gas. He ran it for about a minute, then the water pump puked. You can expect that to happen after long-term storage. Short-term, i.e. 6 months shouldn't be a problem. Frank

what is a "european tone"?
I disagree, bkelly. The best engine sound is of your Z starting up after it's been in the garage for a while.:classic: Frank

what is a "european tone"?
TomoHawk, the page says "slideshow" but if you give it just a second, it will turn into a video. Frank :nervous:

what is a "european tone"?
To quote someone else on this forum whose name escapes me, "Six in a row makes her go!" The "tone" is that of a 38 year-old L24. Sweet, ain't it? Frank

what is a "european tone"?
I just received this from Bill Madamba who was in Texas last January while I was at Texas World Speedway for track day. Bill video'd three parade laps and I submit for your visual and aural pleasure. I'm using Royal Purple 75w90 for both tranny and differential. It's super slippery and is working fine. Frank

Tach accuracy question...
Excellent observation, EScanlon. My primary concern is that because I run the old gal on the track occasionally and that the engine still has the original 5 CW crankshaft in it that a "slight" excursion beyond 7 grand will create a two-piece crankshaft. In order to be as competitive as I want to be with the car, yet keeping it streetable and as original as possible (those may be diametrically opposing goals), I was wanting the tach to be dead-on accurate. But it appears that may not be possible. Do you think that my installation of the Pertronix system (stock coil) would have affected the reading? Thanks, Frank

new to the Z seires
Check the basics. Does it have good gas delivered to the carbs in a clean pipe and new filter? Do you have spark? Get a Field Service Manual (FSM) for reference and instruction.

Removed Window from Door, but...
Have you tried some sort of lubrication?

My first post! Stereo Question
If your Z follows the SS form, you'll have one to let your widow sell. Nice work. One question: Can you still hear? 139db is damned near lethal!!! Frank

Shift Boot retention...
Thanks for the info, fellas. I used Marc P's suggestion. Those binder clips cost $2.09 at Office Max. Best,

My first post! Stereo Question
Once you get your Z up to speed, you'll forget all about your Impala. Guaranteed! Good luck with your project. Don't forget to use the search feature. It's loaded with how-tos from very knowledgeable folk. Frank
