Idle fluctuation
Sounds to me like you've got a vacuum leak somewhere. Are all the hoses intact...not cracked? Plugged in to the appropriate place? Carb shaft seals fresh and not leaking (had that problem on my old SUs)? Frank

You guys North of me won't be happy...
As one of the southern-most folk on the board, I grimaced today as thunderboomers rolled through. Temps a balmy high 60s to low 70s (F) but wet. I drove the Z on Thursday, saw 90, got my fix. Reminded myself that April 6 is next track day and backed off. I really sympathize with you folks up north. Spent 18 months in Minnehelpless and discovered that -50 ain't for this suthern boy. Froze a new battery brick solid. I moved to Texas before the next freeze season. Never regretted it.:stupid: C'mon down. Frank

Hatch glass
Have you tried your local glass company? They supply windshields for most cars ever built and may have a back glass for your S30. Frank

Twice Pipe Exhaust System
Amazombi wrote: "Yeah, that sounds great to me. Did you buy the hole set up or did you do it on youre own. And if you bought it, where did you? Please do the Photo from underneed. Here in Austria there is almost nothing to get about Datsun Z Cars. Just stock Parts and they will be very expensiv and only to get from a Nissan Dealer. So most I buy from Motorsport Auto or Black Dragon." I put the headers (3 into 2) on in 1972. I got them through a Datsun dealer. The pipes were installed at the same time and were put on by a local muffler shop. This last iteration was also done at a local muffler shop. Sorry, I don't have any photos of underneath since the work has been completed.:disappoin Frank

Blast Cabinet - Is this a good deal?
You wrote: "Speaking of problems such as leaking, dust, etc, the other complaint I have heard is the sight glass becoming etched and too cloudy to see through. I wonder how hard it would be to adapt something like a rolling or replaceable tear away film on the window?" A very simple fix to keep glass un-frosted from media bounce is to cover the glass with wire window screen. The media hits the screen and deflects, thus keeping the window from being etched. If you can configure the screen to stand off the glass 1/8 - 3/32", that will give you best results. Regards, Frank

Building a 240Z!
The most important thing you can "buy" is track time. The car is irrelevant at this point in your career pursuit. I would suggest that you enroll at a driving school (like Bob Bondurant's school) and get some high performance time. Other schools are around that have 'Vettes and Cobras, as well as Miatas and Porsches. The car is important, but it's the nut behind the wheel that makes it go. Get the experience anywhere you find it...go karts, autoX, etc., are excellent venues to enhance your skills.

The speedometer has 160, we have took it to 155mph.
Without aero mods, my '70 starts getting pretty squirrelly at 90 - 95. At 100 it's a near death trap. I installed a front air dam from MSA and an IMSA-style rear spoiler. Bear in mind that my engine is far from stock, and the suspension is 2" lower than stock. With the aero mods, the Z handles like a rock at any speed I choose to drive. On a near-closed course one early Sunday morning, 130 mph was slightly surpassed with the tach reading a bit over 6500 rpm. Standard 4 speed with an R-180 w/3.36 gears. The car will go faster, but I was running out of road and the tires are only H-rated. The HybridZ wind tunnel study, published by Nissan MotorSport, indicates that air dams and rear spoilers add sufficient downforce, both front and rear, to keep the S30 planted firmly on the pavement at most achievable speeds....some are better than others, obviously, but they all contribute to stability. Twice Pipe Exhaust System
Amazombi, I have been using the set-up you want for a long time. Originally, I ran the two pipes straight out the back, XKE-style. I had plenty of gas tank clearance (about 2.5cm), but they just didn't look right. I eventually routed them vertically to the original exhaust location. I'll try to post a picture so you can get the idea. The sound is incredibly delightful, especially at 3500 - 6000 rpm. A bit BRAPPY for some, perhaps, but with my ear being about six feet from the exhaust exit, it does sound sweet. I am pretty sure the "mufflers" I installed in 1972 have disintegrated interiors and are nothing more than lengthy echo-chambers. Even then, sweet sound. Regards,

Blasting Media - Suggestions Wanted
Walnut hulls are good, too. They're light in weight so their velocity is greater than, say, glass or AlO2. AlO2 can scar a part if you're a bit careless and I'd also suggest a real fine grit size for this media. FWIW Frank

Head Gasket installation
I think you'll be better off if you go with new springs, etc. with your new cam. A Stage II has greater lift than stock, and stouter springs would be a logical accoutremount. FWIW, Frank

Deep thoughts
I think each of you has hit the proverbial nail squarely on the head! The Zs smell, feel, sound and look particularly unique. I know that's a double something-or-other, but it's true, is it not. Our own testimony gives proof to the truth that when our cars are even thought of in a fleeting moment of whimsey, they come alive. They whisper to us varying messages of times past, urging us to levels of Mitty-dom we rarely achieve in real life. Mechanical objects should not have personalities, but they often do. They are earned personalities, to be sure, but they're there. Whether by performance or durability, economy of operation or the sheer joy of being at the limits, these Z cars give us the sense of having flown....to touch the face of God. Ok, I went overboard a bit. But what the heck. Frank

Joe Flores
I'm looking for Joe. No, he doesn't owe me money. In fact, I owe him a couple of beers. He's an old buddy from the early 70s that used to race a 2 liter Datsun roadster. He was parts manager at a DFW Datsun store for a while back in the early days of Zs. The last I saw him was in '74. We lost touch. Anyone know of Joe (he'll be 62-64 years old now) please let him know I'm trying to find him. Nostalgia is kicking in. Regards,

1st gen seats
JonnyRock...yes, I did. He was about my age, too, which makes it nice. He really treasured the car for 30 years. Only saw one wet road during that time. Garaged constantly. I had the opportunity to give him a couple of parade laps at a track day event two weeks ago. He commented that this was only the second time he'd ever ridden in the right seat, and the first time, I was driving, too. If you want to read more, see the category just above "Misc." and look for a subject called "First Z and Last". The whole scene is laid out there. Update: See "Z stories" category Regards,

Fumes are Killing me
Mine is a '70. It had fume problems since new. In '74, the fumes were so bad that I had the hatch vents sealed and welded over. Fume problem went away. Sold the car in 1977. Fast forward to this year. Got the car back in January. Reinstalled the hatch vents, new rubber everywhere, IMSA spoiler and a tad longer exhaust tip. I don't know which solved the problem, but the fumes are gone.

Phantom Grip ????
I'm thinking of next summer when the Z may see some more track and autoX time. The car has lived 37 years so far without an LSD, but a company called Phantom Grip advertises a bolt-in device for any differential that converts it to LSD...no special anything required. Do any of you know anything of this company or its product? Their reputation? Product performance? Thanks,

side markers yes or no?
The look is cool. But I chose to retain mine strictly because of safety...the visibility thing at night. As I age, my eyes just ain't what they used to be, and if there are other old farts out there, I need to be as visible as possible to keep them from hitting me. FWIW Regards,

Wheels...
After an invigorating two days at Texas World Speedway, I came away with the desire to obtain a set of steel wheels upon which I'll mount some decent track rubber. My street Yokohamas were a tad slippery. And, no, no off-course excursions this time. Does anyone know where or from whom I might obtain a set of 4-bolt 15 x 7 steel wheels? Thanks for your recommendations. Regards,
