The crank bolt was tight. The pulley was separated from the rubber and I will replace with a new one. (yes, I heard the pulley crack while pulling it off) I'll check the keyway but the key is in tight. The pitting around the keyway is all from the pulley and there is a deposit of metal on the crank. (What caused this? It almost looks like a cold weld?) I'll follow your suggetion and clean the crank, it is in the car so it is a bit tough to see and do. Thank you for your suggestions and Happy New Year, 2008! Kay

I just removed the crank pulley using a puller. I found the pulley chiped and both with what I will call spall. It seems to be eroded away from the pulley and deposited on the crankshaft. I have photos of both parts. I am not only unsure as to what it is but also what do to do next. The spalling on the crank is raised and hard, note the scrap marks on the pulley. It almost looks like a flash weld deposit.
  3. The reasoning to block this is to prevent overheating. With the heater valve in place the loop is normally closed, when the valve is open the coolant cools through the heater core, with it looped open, the hot coolant is returned directly to the engine without cooling and can contribute to overheating. In AZ and So. Cal this makes a difference.
