I found that my firewall wasnt sealed very well also, check the gromits and seals there as well. My throttle boot was bad.... lotsa fumes through there. I used clear silicone to help seal the back end... especially the tail lights!
  9. I purchased solid brass bushings on E-bay for $5.00 plus like $4.50 shipping and they work perfectly!!!

Well...... I have the dogs..... the 357..... a place to lock it up..... I just hate obnoxious alarms that go off every time the wind blows.

Hello from Missoula... Unfortunatly it looks as if I will be calling Portland Oregon home from now on however... still all the best!
  14. I think I'll wash it a time or two.... Then get serious about cleaning up the engine compartment! Maybe if I have the time I will start working on some of the electrical gremlins but for the short term I'm going to drive the wheels off it!
  15. My wife allways putts the "do you really need SUPER?" question to me when I fuel up... I simply do the math for her- 10 gallons at 16 cents more per gallon is a whole $1.60 more per tank!!! Go back to your neon! My brother in law and I figured that over 100000 miles of driving the difference between buying a prius and the standard corolla was about $1200.00 in fuel costs yet they want nearly $8000.00 more for the prius! Are people that clueless as not to do the math.... just quick buy it cause everybody els wants one?
  16. The one car I have owned that broke more often than it ran was a 1966 Triumph Spitfire... It would leave me stranded if I looked at it! The fuel pump quit and I walked to the parts store, wait 4 days for the new one... meanwhile car was impounded... pay to get it towed home.... install pump and find ignition switch now turns in dash, wait 4 days for part... install and discover the brake pedal goes to the floor, wait 4 days for parts... wrong part, 4 more days and finally get it on the road and guess what.... flat tire and no spare %^&$*%.... I could not make the car run well enough to sell, so I gave it away for what I could get out of it and passed it on the side of the road 2 days later untill it was towed away again.... Man I got a bad taste for English cars from that one.
  17. round port heads are the late heads- L28. You cant use the round header on the square ports... they wont seal. I purchased mine from MSA for $209.00 and it was worth the price. Just my two cents Kirk

Man, I made the trek from Montana on the 13th of October and made it to Portland with a fresh engine change... only 30 miles of sorting and headed out on the blacktop. I was fortunate to have good weather on my side and only had to fight 8 degree temps over the bigger passes. Snow moved in the day after I got here and Im sure in would have been a more eventful ride had I hit snow. I have never driven my Z in the snow and am in no great hurry to do so.... its bad enough in the rain. By the way if your comin out here I really hope you remembered your umbrella. Good wishes for the rest of your journey!
  19. Well Thats just great because I just gave away every Datsun part I had.. I mean EVERYTHING... its all gone, the spare car with l24, all of my interior parts, heck they even took my oil burning motor that I didnt know what to do with. Wife is really happy because she gets to park in the garage again. The real problem though is I had to leave all of my tools in Montana.. just brought the basics. (just in case)!!!!
  20. OK so it is Cheby orange... and I really didnt have time to clean the engine bay and yes it killed me to put that motor in there but I got it done with 2 days to get to Portland and start school... so I'm here in Portland and made it with 60 miles of shakedown and only had to replace the fuel filter on the trip from Montana. It is burning oil to the tune of about 1 quart per 300 miles. Better than the old motor but not perfect by any means.
  21. I can not believe how nice this motor runs... and how cool!!! My temp guage has not gone over 180 at ANY time. I did eleminate all of the carb hoses so only the heater core is fed. Driving home 30 miles from my budies house (he welded the exhaust for me) and only charged me a brick of .22 rounds, the temp droped to 25 degrees and I saw nothing of a problem. I am again enjoying the Z.
  22. Well I finally got my header from motorsport. Fed Ex damaged it in shipping but I got it.... So everything is on and fired first try. Not bad fro all of about 30 hours of my time and a couple hundred bucks in parts, alot... ALOT of cleaning, grinding and rubbing. Its runnin and I'm a happy boy!
  23. So today I stripped down the new motor and cleaned and painted everything and managed to get it in the hole... tomarrow some accessories will be installed but I'm still waiting on the header and all the filter housings. I will try and pollish up the valve cover, carbs and intakes.

My huge fear as I seem to be prone to misfortune, is that I would damage the head in some way that would render it useless.. or worse.. metal shaveings get in the bottom end and fubar it as well. Im going to try the electric only first and see how things go. Worst case I buy the Holly and reg from Motorsport and install them.

So my delema... I am installing an L28 with an n-47 head ( there is no mechanical fuel pump provision). Has anyone ran only the stock electric pump with SU carbs and had no issues. Any help would sure help as Im moving to Portland in 1 week and need to get this car running.
