Thanks for the responses! Seems that it might not be a bad idea to open in up and have a look. The person who owned the car before me had no idea about what repairs had been done in the 15 years he owned the car - just did not keep any records and knew nothing about cars. I'll wait till spring to open it up and will change the gears, chain, tensioner, and inspect the timing chain guides. John
I just removed mine recently. There are two screws up front, on the side near the radio. As I recall, there are four more screws in that area which hold the radio mounting bracket to the console. Don't need to remove those. Then there are three screws in the storage compartment. That is it except for the wires that need to be unplugged. Good luck! John
Hello! Can anyone give me an idea of the approximate lifetime for a timing chain and/or timing chain tensioner for a 280Z. I just purchased one with 112,000 miles, and am wondering whether or not I should change the chain and tensioner, just to be safe. John 1978 280z
Hello! I recently purchased a 1978 280z with 112,000 miles. I've been going through the car, fixing this and that as well as assessing what types of maintenance issues might need attention. My question is, what is the typical mileage after which the timing chain, sprockets, and tensioners should be changed? Thanks! John
