MSA 3 into 2 Headers and Twice Pipes
It's nearly time! I went today and scheduled an appointment at Martin's Mufflers & Exhaust here in Bellingham for next Wednesday. They're going to put on the headers and weld-up the exhaust. I also took a video of my current setup. I believe it's currently that stock exhaust that came on the car 40 years ago. Please keep in mind it's winter up here so it was cold out, and the car was started just a few minutes before the clip. It's also filmed on a little subcompact digicam as I don't have an actual video camera. <embed src="http://videos.streetfire.net/vidiac.swf" FlashVars="video=802828f6-c24b-4d95-993d-9b68014863ce" quality="high" allowFullScreen="true" bgcolor="#ffffff" width="428" height="352" name="ePlayer" align="middle" allowScriptAccess="sameDomain" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer"></embed><br /><a href="http://videos.streetfire.net/video/My-stock-240Z-exhaust_203620.htm">Quick vid of my stock exhaust which will be swapped out next week for 3-2 coated headers and twice pipes.</a>

New to the site, but not to z's.
Last time I drove to my parents house (250 miles away) I got about 27mpg. It was literally all highway though. Daily driven around town, it's definitely more in the 20mpg range. I've got the original #s matching L6 with the stock round-top SU's.

Looking for some info on these cars
If you're interested in a live axle swap, you should head over to hybridz.org. The vast majority of members here haven't even considered taking out the IRS. In my opinion, don't do it. These cars were not designed for it, and unless you're putting in a 900hp small block, there's no reason to go that route.

My 1974 260z 2+2
Just wanted to congratulate you on such a sweet ride! I posted this link when it first showed up on Jalopnik, but didn't know you were a member here. So once again, here's the Jalopnik post about your beautiful 2+2 http://jalopnik.com/5067927/irishman-modernizes-classic-datsun-260z-hoping-to-start-new-stereotype

Do you like the HHR Stephen? I used one as a loner for a day when the girlfriend's Jetta was in the shop (a regular thing for it) and I was not impressed. Teeny-tiny gun slit windows that started at the shoulder and acres of grey plastic. It was pretty anemic too, definitely not a driver's car. Although I see that it's your wife's, I just wanted to know your impressions.

Now now, lets not start throwing about the "Pushrods are dead" mantra. Take a good look at the LS9 and then tell me it's a lesser technological feat than other comparable engines. 638 hp, 604 lb-ft of twist, 20mpg, daily driveable, and ULEV II emissions rated. Those numbers are nothing to sneeze at.

Chris, I'm sorry but Stephen and Will are right. While there are some great cars that utilize a live rear axle, there's no way that they can handle as well as the best IRS vehicles. It's simple physics (although it does get complicated when you're talking about roll center and handling characteristics). And it's good that you bring up the Mustang, because just about every comparison test in any magazine that puts one up against a four-wheel independent suspensioned car notes that the mustang does well in spite of it's rear axle, not because of it. But it can't compare to the IS setup.

I don't know about you, but my Z is super reliable and gets near 30mpg. I'm in college and have been nothing but happy with my Z. Sure owning a 40 year old car can be frustrating at times, but my Z's a hell of a lot more reliable than my girlfriends '01 Jetta. If you want a Z just take the time to find a good one, and then buy it!

Is this price ok?
I agree you've got to see it first. But a running car, pretty much any running car is worth $750.

What oil do you use?
I don't mean to sound like a **** here, but the search function is very powerful. Check out this thread, many people listed their choice of engine, tranny, and diff oil. http://classiczcars.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=32692

Speaker recommendation for my 240z
And I agree with dave about the Polk Audios. All of my speakers in my car are Polks and I couldn't be happier. I've got 5.25" components in the doors and two 6x9's in the back. Polks are priced right and sound great. Mine are the "db" series btw.

Speaker recommendation for my 240z
A large part of how they will sound depends on what kind of music you'll be listening to and wether they'll be run straight to the head unit or through an amp. So which is it?

Looking for engine L24-063102
Craig is right. He's not looking for the engine # that matches his VIN, he's in search of the engine # matching what's stamped on the engine ID tag on the passenger side of the engine bay.

Rough Running
I wouldn't worry about the oil pressure reading 0 at idle. This is a Z trait and usually not a sign of worry (as long as it goes up with the revs!).

parking brake?
I don't have a 280, nor have I dealt with the parking brake on my car. But I do know that pictures always help, so if you can upload any, it would really allow people to understand better.

Where should i start with my car?
I've got to agree with Carl Beck. This project is going to be a huge undertaking and sacrifice on your part, and it may be a better option for you to buy one of the many Zs available all over your area. I understand that there's sentimental value here, but this is going to be a pricey redo. The interior will be very expensive to replace, there could be burn-in on our cylinders if fluids weren't drained, and the body looks alright but that rear hatch shows you'll probably have some rust issues. I recommend buying one off craigslist for $1-3K if you want a good project car. Sure it would be great to fix up an old family car, but this one hasn't been well cared for and could get you in over your head. If you decide that you really are set on fixing this one, I'd go one of two routes depending on my needs: Do I need it as a working vehicle soon, or can I afford to let it sit while I fix it up. If you need it for a driver, listen to Will (HLS30). If not, listen to five&dime. Either way, welcome to the club!

Flat black hood
Significance? I've never known it to be anything other than a stylistic choice, or a necessary one when replacing a hood and you're low on funds. I think you can get away with a careful rattle-can flat black job on a hood. The Z has a pretty large hood, but it's definitely doable. There's an article from one of the import mags (I can't remember if it's in the mag or on their site) in which they rattle can an entire WRX. They do it all up in flat black and end up very pleased with the result.
