Early Hood Differences
Sometimes, I don't like what I find here on the site. Looks like my hood must have been replaced at some point. It's a #3 hood with the reinforcements, and holes. Doesn't seem to jive with the build date of 02/70, so it must be newer.

Help me spec an engine
Half of the posts in answer to this question are going to tell you to pick up the book "How To Modify Your Nissan & Datsun OHC Engine" it's a great start. You can find it here: http://www.thezstore.com/page/TZS/CTGY/TB

Best car cover for an early Z?
Worried about door dings, eh? Well why didn't you say so! Maybe it's time to invest in the "DoorPal"!!! Even if your daughter comes through the garage swinging a shovel, you won't have to bat an eye. No seriously, check out this guys door-ding prevention invention. Funny stuff. It's a good idea, but poorly executed in my opinion. http://www.autoblog.com/2007/12/03/video-protect-your-car-from-door-dings-and-shovels/ http://www.autoblog.com/2007/12/06/video-acura-nsx-gets-whacked-with-a-shovel-part-2/

Best car cover for an early Z?
I sprang for the Gold Technalon Cover from MSA. With the cable lock, bag, and shipping it was a little over $200. I've been very pleased with it; when I get the chance to use it. I live in a virtual wind tunnel, which blows like crazy at night, so it hasn't seen a whole lot of use. I saw one at Costco the other day, it was a generic one for about $30. Seeing what little use I've gotten out of mine recently, maybe I should have bought one of those. Anyway, I've been happy with the MSA one, although they DON'T tell you that there's only one cutout for the Driver's rear view mirror. Nothing on the passenger side. That pissed me off quite a bit when I first got it. Luckily I have the turbo mirrors (which I hate) that fold up. You can find it here: http://www.thezstore.com/page/TZS/PROD/T/50-1008

I seen the General Lee today !
You said it had Washington plates? While there are plenty of replicars out there, it may have been this one. Saw it a few years ago @ the yearly car show/cruise-in in Long Beach, WA.

Clear Film Bra / Stone Chip Protection Question
Yea, I'd only get it professionally done. There's a place in Everett, WA that does it, I'll have to call for a quote. As for the waxing, it says on 3M's site that you can wax over it, so I'd think that simply being careful to wipe off any excess wax along the edges of the film would minimize the "crack" look effect.

Is this a crankshaft?
It's oil consumption would be measured in barrels, not quarts!

Clear Film Bra / Stone Chip Protection Question
I'm very interested in this too. I was just on 3M's site yesterday. Anyone using it?

I have a question about horsepower.
You're pretty much doubling output. It ain't gonna be cheap.

new to z's from Kansas
A number of 240 owners would also be interested in the Alternator off of your 81. I just picked one up myself for my stereo system/headlight upgrade. Welcome Chad!

Should we be worried?
It's still considered a minority stake, because Ford owns 33.9% now (previously it was 15%). Ford increased its ownership because Mazda was having financial problems, not so much a government requirement. And because it doesn't have over 50% it's not a majority. It is a controlling stake however.

Is this a crankshaft?
A number of supertankers and container ships use it, and it was actually first produced only 11 years ago in 1997. You can read more here: http://www.gizmag.com/go/3263/

Is this a crankshaft?
These are still used in some ships. Learned about them in my Power Mechanics class last year.

Low Mileage Series I on Ebay
Those seats look amazing.

Finally hit 65k, you?
I just meant that the miles weren't in doubt. Typically they'd have their original engine at this point, so that all I was getting at. It's great to see all the low mileage Z's still around. Hope to see some of you in Canby!

Finally hit 65k, you?
I'm looking forward to meeting a bunch of you guys. I'm a fairly new member, does this (or the NW Z's club) have a few meets during the summer?
-
Finally hit 65k, you?
So I finally rolled over 65,000 miles in the Z today. I did the math and she's averaged about 1700 miles per year since production. In actuality, it was more like 50 miles per year for the last 10-15 years. Who else here has a low mileage original like me?

Getting her wet
I hate taking the Z out in the rain, but it's a necessary situation because she's my DD. So I'm of course worried about rust. Well, I don't have the means to improve protection on the undercarriage with POR-15 or undercoat (although that is on the list for the summer). I've found one thing that gives me a bit more peace of mind. Ever seen those commercials for "Zorbeez"? Well my girlfriend picked up an "ABSORBER" cloth at Fred Meyer recently cuz she thought I'd like it for the Z. Let me tell you, this thing is amazing! One 12"x20"x.125" cloth (about) dried the entire exterior of the car. So now that she's back under cover, she doesn't have to sit there wet, and I didn't have to purchase and launder a bunch of shop rags. Just thought those of us who have to take 'em out in the rain, but bring them back indoors afterward would appreciate knowing that these things really work.

The Real Dream Garage
Damn, I remember reading about that when it first came out. I was like 12. It was the first car I'd ever seen that cost $1 million new. Ooh, I'd take that R34 M Spec Nur. There's kind of a lack of 240's though, don't you think?

Making twin turbo 240Z - need advice
Everyone needs to calm down, this is quickly becoming a pissing contest. But: Yes, it's totally fair to compare 2 engines like that. You made a BLANKET statement the "NO" n/a 2.8 could touch a turbo'd 2.4. If you go out to the real world, there are plenty of shitty turbo'd 2.4's you could find that would get spanked by a some well done 2.8 you could find. Your comment should have said ""No PROPERLY BUILT N/A 2.8 L motor will make more power than a PROPERLY BUILT 2.4 with a pinwheel"

Side View Mirrors?
Well it doesn't mean that it sat on the lot 6 months. A 4-5 month turn around from the time a car is produced until it hits the lot is common. Especially if the car has to be shipped from Japan.
-
Side View Mirrors?
Arne's exactly right, it's just how things were. But there were reasons for it. On smaller cars like the Z, the right side mirror wasn't really necessary because you could see pretty well out of it with a simple head check. I plan on returning to the single stock chrome mirror (I've got some hideous turbo ones now) as soon as funding allows me to. Cars have 2 mirrors today because it's legally required.
-
Should we be worried?
Yes they do, good catch. And Ford also owns a minority stake in Mazda. But back to the subject I don't think that we have anything to worry about.

Making twin turbo 240Z - need advice
That's a great write-up Six_Shooter. Let me just add that "Dual sequential turbos" are fairly common in the turbocharging world (both production and aftermarket) but I believe correctly matching your (AggieZ) own two of different sizes would be significantly more difficult.
