The Exhaust Debate
I put the previously mentioned 3-2 double coat header with MSA Dynomax turbo muffler exhaust and was happy with the sound, although louder than what I had hoped for. Replaced the kit msa exhaust with a new pipe for closer bends and a smaller turbo style muffler (maybe 3/4 the size of the MSA Dynomax supplied). Now the car sounds almost raunchy and has crossed the borderline of too loud for me. Couldn't be happier with the MSA header, very unhappy with the fit and look of the MSA turbo muffler exhaust system although it sounded good, and now the new exhaust system looks and fits better with the smaller muffler and custom bent pipe, but it's too loud and unrefined for my taste. (I tried posting a low res picture of it the other day, but website was slow, will post soon).

Previous '74 260z L28 Dual Carb
This engine really had some grunt, previous owner had installed it. Not quick revving but made a lot of power. 72 intake with round top carbs, P79 head, MSD Blaster ignition. non-coated 3/2 header.

My previous early '74 260z
Sold this car over the summer (July '07) to purchase my new car I had found ('70 240z). Bought from a club member in South Carolina in Dec '05. Was modified with a dual carb L28 and 300zx/Toyota caliper front brakes. Drove nicely and was fairly quick but I didn't enjoy it anymore because it was an automatic, wanted a manual 240z.

oil change
i use the bosch 3500 oil filter. it's much larger than the specified one in the autozone/advance catalog. used it on both my L24 and L28 engines, it does take a bit more oil, usually about 5.5 quarts with this larger oil filter. also, if you're running a fairly new rebuilt engine, don't mess with a heavy weight oil, it doesn't need it. my engine maintains good oil pressure and has about 20k miles since it's rebuild, so 30 weight is as heavy as I will go. 40 and 50 weight creates too much friction and heat for a motor that doesn't need it.

Renewed Z Car Owner
Hello all, Site looks great, can't believe it has taken me this long to find a site like this and start becoming active on my Z car club membership and restoring my car. Sold my modified 260z over the summer (bought on eBay Nov '05) to purchase a fairly original 1970 240z (on eBay again). My new car has a build date of 1/70 and is serial number 000797 so I am looking forward to restoring it close to original without too many modifications (other than the new msa header i put on). Risky buying cars on eBay but I've really been lucky with my last one and this one too; true Datsun owners/sellers on eBay have seemed to be honest and good to work with. I'm somewhat active in my local club chapter (Smoky Mt. Z Car Club) in East Tennessee and hope to start contributing to the site once I'm done researching and asking a few questions to get started. I'm needing a paint job and searching for trim pieces. Other than the pesky rear brakes bleeding all over themselves, I should be up and running soon. -chris smith smzcc #155

Just curious....
so to summarize, location humidity, rainfaull and population are the major factors. i see 1-3 a week in knoxville, tn, but my neighborhood has an unusually high concentration of them (i've counted 8 different owners of pre 84 z's and zx's). about the same for other datsuns (trucks, 210s, 810s) but i haven't seen a 510 on the road anywhere in over 3 years.

Online tire purchase experience?
discounttire.com is a good deal if you don't have one in your state (avoid sales tax). they've always offered free shipping and have an excellent yoko and falken selection. they cost more per tire than tire rack, but i've never got free shipping from tire rack.

Who Still Makes 215/60/R14 tires?
i ran the yoko avid s/t's on my 260 in that size. two years ago from tirerack, they were about $50 a piece, not too bad.

msa performance exhaust, 6-1 header with pics
i was amazed at how poorly it fit too, should have taken pictures when it was on the rack before i had i removed. there was maybe a 1-1/2" gap between the mounting point under the rear suspension and the exhaust pipe. the u clamps were also positioned poorly with the threads pointing down. i am wondering about my suspension being lowered, this car (240) rides a hole lot lower than my 260 did with the same size tires and all. had this car only for a few months and haven't had a chance to look around it much. i did think that the supplied dynomax was a little too large though for looks. yeah it fit, but it was too wide of an oval (it mounts vertically) and the bottom of the oval hung down too much for my liking.

msa performance exhaust, 6-1 header with pics
i just put the 3/2 coated header on and couldn't be happier. well, i wussed out and let my buddy's shop put it on. great sound and looks good. i bought the aluminized exhaust kit (with the dynomax) and was sorely disappointed by it. the muffler was big and looked awful and the kit drug over every speed bump and my driveway. took it down to a muffler shop and had him run a whole new exhaust set up with a smaller turbo muffler. the exhaust system the shop made me hugs a lot better than the kit from msa, hasn't scraped on anything yet. the muffler shop charged the same as the kit from msa, so i'd suggest passing on it. it's still pretty loud but sounds better than the rotted out twice pipes system that was on it.
