Ira sets new EP track record at VIR
The BRE type spoiler is legal provided it does not protrude forward of the leading edge of the hood ( if no bumper is used ), if bumper is used no part of the air dam or spoiler ( including splitter ) may protrude beyond the leading edge of the bumper. It`s really just a personal choice, the BRE type is cool looking etc. however the air dam that Greg runs is really more functual that the spook type. Greg, nice run.............keep`em honest!! P.S. If you broke an outer stub axle ( strut end not diff ) I`d suggest using the later stub axle from the 280-Z . It`s stronger and has better machined radiuses in critical machined areas. Jeff Winter

15" Track Wheel Suggestions?
A local has broken five Kodiaks in the last three years. :stupid: My local race tire rep thinks they`re awful as well. Light yes, fragile yes. Be careful , you`ve been warned.

15" Track Wheel Suggestions?
John, That surprises me.......big time. The `light` has material removed from the outer spokes and rim. As far as I know the centers ( hub ) are the same as the standard FS. With all due respect my opinion of Panasports remains unchanged. That said, no wheel will hold up much to `contact`. Jeff

15" Track Wheel Suggestions?
Having been a dealer for Panasports for some 30 years I can say that I`ve never seen a Panasport crack. For that matter I`ve never had ANY issues with them. They have always been my first choice. I race on them because they are the best. Jeff Winter

Member Greg Ira wins most improved SCCA Club Racer and receives the Kimberly Cup
Carl, Next time you see Craig Ross ask him about the `chilli dog in the helmet` incident at Sebring in `72. I was one of the builders of the 240-Z we raced that year. Keith Pritchett and Chip Scudder along with Roger Busch were also in on it. Wish I could remember the other guys but my mind is fading. Seems we went out around mid race after a Camaro spun in front of the Z and the front end got pretty `puckered`. My memory tells me that car was later sold to Spencer Buzby and later raced in IMSA. Spencer Buzby Tropical Fish Farm was the sponsor ( even though the fish farm had no fish ). We all grew up around Don Kearney`s `Foreign Car Service` in Clearwater Florida. Rather than chasing skirts on the weekends we grew up sweeping floors at Don`s. ...........ya gotta start somewhere. neat thread.......... keep it up! Greg Ira E Prod. 240Z Runoffs thread!
Just saw results of the race......... Greg third. Even though it didn`t come out as you might have liked Greg, you gotta be pleased making the podium......... not many other Z guys have been there......... especially considering the tough competition. I lift my glass to ya brother.......... it`s tough at the top!! Jeff Winter

AMAZING racing brake pads!!!
I`ve used nothing but Porterfield R-4s for years........ too many national wins to count......... including a national championship. I have had ZERO fade issues with them AND they are very rotor-friendly on the race track. Their R-4S is a great street pad as well. Jeff Winter RallyeSport - Winter Racing Engines

early Z rear brake conversion
thanks Greg, I`ll see if I can find Sam`s #. The caliper spacer should not be a problem however I`d sure like to find the caliper adaptor that mounts to the strut. Jeff

early Z rear brake conversion
Anyone out there familiar with a rear disc brake conversion for an early Z (280-Z ) race car that utilizes a 240/280 Z front caliper which uses a `spacer` to split the caliper halves to gain 3/4" in width which then slip over a 1" wide 11" dia vented rotor? This is what is on my vintage 280Z race car. It has a nice hub mounted bolt-on caliper bracket ......... I`d like to duplicate this set-up. This car came from the SE part of the country many years ago. Any info on this set-up would be appreciated. Jeff Winter Rallye/Sport - Winter Racing Engines 303 427 0510

Sorry, not about 240z but Does anyone have a Mikuni intake manifold for L18/L20B?
Eiji I have new Nissan Motor Sports intake manifolds in stock as well as my ( Rallye/Sport ) custom intake manifold which has been on RunOffs winning cars. Jeff Winter Rallye/Sport-Winter Racing Engines 303 427 0510

Building a 240Z!
Sane, Whatever you do.......... make your race car reliable. Whether it be a "900 H.P. monster" or a 150H.P. stocker, take the appropriate steps to keeping the engine well oiled. Don`t expect to thrash on a road course with out a competition ( re. well baffled ) oil pan. Another preventitive measure is to raise your oil pressure...... quite cheap and simple. If you break your engine you`ve just quite possibly sacrificed your racing budget before you even get started. Also..... Be easy on your RPMs. The L-six has very specific dos and don`t. Do keep it well oiled and DON`T over rev it. The stock crank has some very unique `dark areas` ie. bad harmonics. I could go on and on...... Welcome to the fraternity......... and keep in mind we ALL started on a budget. Feel free to call me at the shop, Jeff Winter Rallye/Sport - Winter Racing Engines Denver, Colo 303 427 0510

Good luck Greg Ira!
Corner weighting is definately a good thing but you can go farther on it........ Adding / subtracting / relocating weight to road level is where I`d go. If you have a `Petty bar` over your head as a top diagonal I`d remove it . Bring your center of gravity down........ get rid of or remove anything unnecessary that is above the tranny tunnel top or lower. Think `center of gravity`. When I build my cages I use .060" wall on all non required elements. I`m constantly amazed to see so many over-built cages especially with elements that are chest high or better. :stupid: keep us posted ! Jeff Winter Rallye/Sport - Winter Racing Engines

Good luck Greg Ira!
It`s always nice to see a weight reduction for the Z however 50#s is negligible. I know, I know......... I`m raining on your parade, sorry. :nervous: When they added 50#s and then another 25#s to the 510 in GP we just put it where it `helped` and we went faster. I believe they gave you a weight reduction just to make you think they ( the AdHoc ) are trying to help you but I`m afraid it just looks like `lip service` to me. Adding 75 #s to the RX-7 is also a mute point...... maybe 150#s OR reducing the venturis in the carb might actually make a difference. The only safe and feasable ( not to mention cheap ) way to slow down faster cars is to restrict the intake. Adding a lot of weight adds its` own problems of safety etc. . Speaking from experience I hate to see these `bones` being thrown about this way. Good to see you guys back at it and having fun. I`m just crying in my beer `cause I`m out of it for a while ( re vintage ). All the best, Jeff Winter

Good luck Greg Ira!
Yeah, I agree on a few concessions. The ante has been raised quite a bit. Your efforts are to be commended.......... you`re giving it all it has. I assume you`ve been petitioning the AdHoc pointing out the `upper ante`?? If not I`m afraid it might be a bit late for `08...........but you never know. State you case.............. you`ve nothing to loose.

Good luck Greg Ira!
Mark, I`m afraid the EP Z won`t be getting anything more. I`d bet on that. Greyson showed the car`s true hand, but sadly didn`t win the big one. As to the red/white 240........ it`s a sweet candidate seeings how it was a `ground-upper`. Just drop in a 300+ H.P. motor and a stouter gearbox and go ripping up corvetes!! I can quite often qualify my sled on the pole of a vintage big bore group.......... it really messes with the V8 egos. 8-) Jeff

Good luck Greg Ira!
Hi Mark, To answer your question......... Does Gregg want to loose ALL of his hair?? :nervous: Unless you use a state-of-the-art tube frame chassis with the engine located as far back in the chassis as legaly possible you might make an interesting go of it. The shear weight and physical dimensions of the L-28 engine make weight distribution a bit of a major factor. Fuel injection would also be a must to take `advantage` of the 33mm S.I.R. . I also believe that the car formula needs to shed 100#s or so. To us Z purists this "Z car" now becomes a mongrel........ The reason I was able to push thru a reclassification of the Z from 2 to 3was quite simple. GT3 numbers were way down and I simply hoped that by reclassifying the car from a class it couldn`t be competitive in any more to one that it might have a `chance`, it just might bring some of the older tub chassis cars out of storage or lure a few out of vintage racing to simply add to the GT3 numbers. The Z still can be run in either class ( GT2 or GT3 ). Yes, Gregg could switch to GT3........ but just for fun. To be really competitive you have to have a tube frame and a lot of enthusiasm. I WON 3 nationals last year by attrition but for a RunOffs victory in a tub Z ..... forget it. The `07 RunOffs experience was a treat for me simply because I had no expectations of being competitive but it was satisfying because I had the chance to see what this old tub could do. I was also running on 600 endro compound Goodyears........ 475s would have been worth a second or two but that wasn`t the point. Just being there was my goal. The car got rave reviews from those who saw it and stopped by to say hello....... everyone likes a real Z. Running a Z in vintage racing can be a real blast. Now that most vintage clubs a welcoming Zs and 510s we can now run these cars as they were raced in the seventies..... ie real horsepower. One of my customers ran his Z at a vintage race at Road America last summer and ran 4th or 5th in a field of some 60 cars....... being beaten only by a few 911s that we though might have `questionable` sized engines. Vintage racing can be a excellent alternative. I know....... it aint the same....... but it`s another option for some. Happy new year, Jeff Winter

HIGH PLAINS RACEWAY, CO updates
Actually we now have $1.3 million including private donations and added council clubs donations!! We are holding our breath in anticipation of ground breaking sometime this spring if all goes well. This will be a terrific track. The only level ground is the paddock......... on track elevation changes up to 90 ft. It`s hard to be patient! Jeff

Good luck Greg Ira!
Gregg is right . I did have a ball during the race. Considering the fact that I was driving a vintage `75 280-Z ex CP race car- right out of the `70s that was all steel AND the only full unibody car in the race I`d say we did all right. My goal in `07 was to help the GT3 numbers this year. The class was in danger of expulsion from the RunOffs because of low entry numbers. I really wasn`t planning on racing at all this year but since the Comp Board took my suggestions to heart and reclassified the Z from GT2 to GT3 I felt a bit obligated to run my vintage Z in GT3. By finishing every race I ran during the year I managed to out-squeek a BMW by two points for the divisional title. In regards to the `no disrespect` mention......... none taken. Attrition is a major factor in GT racing. I started from the back of the pack due to a nagging fuel feed issue but with the help of Gregg`s crew we did manage to find the problem before the race. I did manage to make a few `legitimate` passes. You gotta keep in mind that this car is an `ancient` ex- CP vintage car.....straight out of the `70s. I was 350#s HEAVY ( overweight ) from the current tube frame rules of today. This just might shed a bit of light on the lap time discrepencies. Did I mention the fact that I was running a 33mm Single Inlet Restrictor?? Imagain trying to suck all the air the engine needs thru ONE 33mm hole???? This restrictor plate formula cut me back to 265 H.P.. You do the math. The Z is going back to vintage racing next year......... beating up on the `big bore` guys. :classic: Jeff Winter Rallye/Sport - Winter Racing Engines 303 427 0510
