Anyplace within about 100 miles of Portland, OR where I can get a new or reconditioned gas tank for a 1972?
  2. ZwolleY posted a post in a topic in Help Me !!
Actually it would not start after I blew the lines out. It only started after I supplied gas from a can. There is a clanking sound comming from the gas tank and the guage does not work. Is there a connection there?

Maybe getting the problem narrowed down. Tried to start the car with no success. Gas not getting to the filter. Blew out the fuel line to the tank, it bubbled nicely. Checked for a filter or pump near the tank-none. Put a gas line into a container of gas and the car started right up. Hooked up the lines and tried again-started right up. Any ideas? This could be something that acts intermittantly since in the past the car just acts like it has run out of gas. I am eager to solve this problem, almost ready to change my user name to "12manyz"

Dave==those are great ideas. I really do not know if there is another pump or filter near the gas tank. And I will try the compressed air. Thanks

I replaced the fuel filter, changed the fuel pump and checked fuel level in the tank. Fuel is not getting to the filter with either pump. On the pump subject. One of the pumps is much newer. It has plenty of resistance when I move the lever and has a strong sucking sound. The one I put on has much less resistance and moves in two stages, easy first and then more difficult. It also does not have the strong sucking sound the other has. What does this indicate-the difference in action? Does the lack of fuel to the filter indicate that the screen in the tank is plugged? Again, the car sat for about 1 1/2 years.

    Try GOOGONE. Available almost anywhere.

I got the chokes adjusted thanks to help found here and some from my repair manual but--. The car sat for about 1 1/2 years with a partly filled tank. Got the car running and had carbs cleaned out about 4 months ago. But once in awhile the car just stops dead. Turns over fine but won't go. Sometimes it will start after sitting a few hours but this time no go. I put some water remover in. I believe that scale from the tank is fouling the jets, or what ever. If this is the case, how does this stuff get by the fuel filter? Is there an easy way to clear this stuff from the carb and get the car running. Long term do I need a new tank or can they be cleaned? 1972 with SU's.

Are these things repairable-if the motor does not work?
  9. What shop manual do you pros like for the 240Z? I have a 1971 Henley Press shop manual and Chilton's manual. The Chilton is very much like the Henley book. They both seem o.k. but there are omissions. I use a Haynes for my Taurus and there is a Haynes available for the 240Z. Any recommendations? I need lots of detailed explanation and pictures.

I pulled the plugs and they were all sooty, not wet. Cleaned them but it did not help. I was able to adjust the chokes and the car started but only ran for about 5 minutes. Then it died and did not restart. The plugs sooted up again. While it was running, the idle was very erratic. Shot up to about 3,500 and then down to nearly nothing before it died. It has plenty of fuel. The only screw I adjusted was the fast idle setting screw.

I guess that my abillity to open the hood led me to believe that I was a SU mechanic. No so. It started by attempting to fix a problem of the choke control light staying on. I pulled the air cleaner, loosened the two screws on the choke control wires (so far so good) and fiddled around until things got of whack. I got a few miles of driving until black smoke started appearing from the exhaust pipe and it finally died, in my driveway thankfully. It will not start even after sitting over night. Flooding badly I guess. Is there a short term fix for this that will get me to a guy in a long robe with stars on it, a tall pointy hat and a magic wand to cast a get well spell on it? The car is a '72 with original carbs that have been recently tuned. By the way, it was not a complete failure--the light stays off.
  12. hubcaps.com show the ones with 'Z' as '74 to '76. earlier covers have the 'D'. anyone know for sure what is correct?

do you have four really good wheel covers? for '72
  14. Couple of questions about wheel covers: I have three original for a '72 that are in rough shape, rusty, red center medallion missing on one, etc. Is it worth restoring these or just too much trouble? After giving thought to putting chrome wheels on my car, I am now thinking original wheel covers. I did a lot of searching on the usual sites but no success. Are new, or very good used ones or restored covers available? How much should I expect to pay? It seems like there should be some out there in garages or shops since many cars have chrome wheels. Are wheel covers from '70 thru '73 the same?
  15. I have to admit that this is a very flattering picture of the car. I could show you some rust, worn floor mats, etc.
  16. My first post here was asking for help establishing a value for my car. Surfing around this site has restored my interest in keeping it. It is a '72 "daily driver". Very much in original condition with 106K miles on it. The body is rough but it runs well enough. I am glad I found this site-what a great community.

To what extent does it change the speedometer? Is there a % change as tire size changes?
  18. ZwolleY posted a post in a topic in Open Discussions
I will also be putting new tires on a 14x6 wheels. What size tire came stock on a '72? What is the stock wheel size? My car now has 175x14 tires. I know these are small, considering the trend to mount large tires, but are they o.k. for normal driving (I guess they must be)? The Fall 1996 issue of ZCar Magazine has a discussion of aftermarket wheels. The thinking in this article may be outdated though.
  19. Any recomendations for a good SU mechanic in the Portland, Oregon (or out toward Hood River) area? A shade tree mechanic would be o.k. if they Knew their stuff and were comfortable in long pants. My carbs seem to be frequently in need of adjustment.

Thanks to both of you. I am not a fast driver and I like the looks of the car better without the air dam so will leave it off. Paul

I saw this on another site refering to racing Z's. What is it? Also-I bought my car, a '72, with a BRE air dam. What is its purpose? I took it off because I needed to have the car towed. Will the car drive better at freeway speeds with it on? Paul

This is what mine looks like. I bought the car from a guy that had it since 1972 and presume that it is original. Can anyone confirm this? If the photo does not get throught, it is thumb shaped symetrical and has "CHOKE" under the symbol. Paul
