I don't have an S30 b/c my dad has 4 of them (Diseazd) But I have a 1972 510 and a 1992 BMW E34 525. Both of which have extensive work done. I do plan to get an S30 some day in the near future but I want to do some sort of modern motor swap when that time comes. The 72 510 has a Rebello Frankenstein 2.3 L20. 14 light weight panasports, Nissan comp header, Crane ignition, Twin Mikuni 44's, Roadster 5 speed, Ermish coilovers and F&R sways. It's really fun to drive and sounds insane When I got the car the wiring was all hacked, It had a euro M3 style mirror, BRE stripes, a 240z hood section molded into the 510 hood, no carpet and the engine bay looked awful. The car was straight but the PO had done a poor job at keeping it clean and tasteful. I pulled everything and repainted the bay. Then cleaned and painted the bottom end. The head was rebuilt and all aluminum was bead blasted and cleared. Carbs sent to Todd at Wolfcreek, I did the fuel system and the paint under the hood. PPG base/clear. Ordered the L series cad bolt kit from Eiji at Datsun Spirit. Painted the radiator support black and did the grill. Got a parts car with a perfect hood and a stock passenger seat. Painted the hood satin black. Wetsanded the exterior and buffed. Lowered the car another 1" The pillars and 1/4 window frames were black as well. I prefer the stock look so I painted those with PPG base clear as well. Then there is the BMW 1992 E34 525 with 175k. My dad and I pulled the motor and I dropped in a 1998 528 variable valve timing 2.8L (over my old non variable valve timing 2.5L) Before that we re-built the whole motor. New BMW rings, bearings, gaskets etc. I installed M3 cams and the larger OBDI intake manifold. The exterior has 54o brake ducts, M5 sideskirts, Euro front and rear lights and trim, vogtland springs with koni shocks, AC Schnitzer wheels. I also retro fitted Acura TSX projecters and HID's for a killer headlight system. The interior has 95 door panels in which I removed the wood trim, sanded it, painted it in PPG black base/clear with wetsand and buff. Black suede headliner, A,B & C pillars. <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/14049800@N00/2477570002/" title="IMG_8578 by RVAE34, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3203/2477570002_5feb7cbf4f_b.jpg" width="1024" height="683" alt="IMG_8578" /></a> <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/14049800@N00/2502920004/" title="IMG_8777 by RVAE34, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2398/2502920004_bb6eda2886_b.jpg" width="1024" height="683" alt="IMG_8777" /></a> <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/14049800@N00/2521597460/" title="IMG_8871 by RVAE34, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3103/2521597460_35b609cc09_b.jpg" width="1024" height="683" alt="IMG_8871" /></a> <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/14049800@N00/2510196598/" title="IMG_8793 by RVAE34, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2098/2510196598_d259e95eee_b.jpg" width="1024" height="683" alt="IMG_8793" /></a> <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/14049800@N00/2474007685/" title="IMG_8570 by RVAE34, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2111/2474007685_619688d182_b.jpg" width="1024" height="683" alt="IMG_8570" /></a> <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/14049800@N00/3430742206/" title="IMG_0004 by RVAE34, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3597/3430742206_a3fe5d6cc5_b.jpg" width="1024" height="683" alt="IMG_0004" /></a> <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/14049800@N00/3448422649/" title="IMG_0368 by RVAE34, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3556/3448422649_e128f040ba_b.jpg" width="1024" height="670" alt="IMG_0368" /></a> <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/14049800@N00/3570953347/" title="IMG_1980 by RVAE34, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3642/3570953347_5fa8ee453a_b.jpg" width="1024" height="684" alt="IMG_1980" /></a>

Embarrassing : engine keep running for a few seconds
five&dime replied to mikemerkury's topic in Engine & Drivetrain
Sometimes the iginition switches in the old Datsuns do funny things. It is fairly commin for that to happen on the 510's Something to do with the ignition contacts. Consensus is always to swap out the back of the ignition switch. Or take it apart and clean the contacts. Or it is the famous "diesling" as Fastwoman wrote. -
I am suspect of the body work in this car. Just doesn't look right. It does still appear to have all the dimples in the rear wheel arches. That's a plus. I would definitely go see it in person though if it were me.
-
I think it was only available in 72. I have seen a number of them for sale. My dad has a perfect one. I think it is the single greatest color you can paint an S30!!!! Please don't change it
-
Make sure you wrap that foil really well. It's a great trick but it also allows paint to creep in if you don't wrap it right. I used like 3 boxes for my 510
-
Hooray!!! Nothing better than an easy fix to an annoying rattle!!!

They are slide valves. Don't know what kind. All I know is they probably cost almost as much as my car He has them on both his cars. This thing is truly amazing!!!! Notice the cad plated suspension components, cad fuel tank straps, and color matched gas tank to rear panel. I especially love the polished exhaust. The car is just as beautiful upside down as right side up!!!!! -

Double wammy picture overload. Sorry for all those with dial up My dad finally filled the dance card with a 73 240z with 42k miles. Now he has a 70, 71, 72 & 73 This car is awesome!!! All reciepts, original paint, interior etc. It's like new inside. Drives amazing. I even like the auto trans!!!! Second set of photos is the Fairfax meet this past Sunday. Eiji Hosimi brought Hiro Hatanaka who was in town from Japan. Hiro is well known both here and Japan for being a premiere Z restorer, tuner etc. Eiji also brought out his newest creation. A 280z with 240z rear end conversion, True JDM G nose kit and an incredibly clean L28 with slide valve carbs just like his orange 240z. <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/14049800@N00/3879818556/" title="IMG_4298 by RVAE34, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2541/3879818556_fb5344f348_b.jpg" width="1024" height="684" alt="IMG_4298" /></a> <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/14049800@N00/3879820260/" title="IMG_4303 by RVAE34, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2423/3879820260_2efd4c6554_b.jpg" width="1024" height="684" alt="IMG_4303" /></a> <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/14049800@N00/3879820928/" title="IMG_4305 by RVAE34, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2449/3879820928_c3190d570d_b.jpg" width="1024" height="684" alt="IMG_4305" /></a> <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/14049800@N00/3879823022/" title="IMG_4310 by RVAE34, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3451/3879823022_0f140e4e98_b.jpg" width="1024" height="684" alt="IMG_4310" /></a> <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/14049800@N00/3879029081/" title="IMG_4319 by RVAE34, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2527/3879029081_3ac347285d_b.jpg" width="1024" height="684" alt="IMG_4319" /></a> <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/14049800@N00/3879027553/" title="IMG_4315 by RVAE34, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3447/3879027553_564b400806_b.jpg" width="1024" height="684" alt="IMG_4315" /></a> <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/14049800@N00/3879827346/" title="IMG_4320 by RVAE34, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2426/3879827346_9489f49127_b.jpg" width="1024" height="684" alt="IMG_4320" /></a> <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/14049800@N00/3879037807/" title="IMG_4346 by RVAE34, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3423/3879037807_868a964362_b.jpg" width="1024" height="684" alt="IMG_4346" /></a> <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/14049800@N00/3879044127/" title="IMG_4358 by RVAE34, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2515/3879044127_a9864efc7a_b.jpg" width="1024" height="684" alt="IMG_4358" /></a>

Eiji's bolt kit is great!!! I believe he gets them all from Japan. 95% were cad plated in my kit and most of the bolts had the Nissan numbers stamped in (4's & 7's). And the prices are killer as well. About 1000% cheaper than going through Reddat!!! Your cars are great!!! You and my dad seem to have the same taste in colors. All you need now is a white and lime Z and you will be twins on opposite coasts
-
I always wetsand by hand. I use a foam block from the paint store and then go from 800 on the run areas then start at 1000 on the whole car. Work my way up to 2000-3000 using nice light circular sanding motion. Always keeping the surface wet. Then I use my high speed buffer with 3 different 3M compounds. Extra cut, swirl mark remover and then finish-it final polish. Makes a paintjob look amazing after all these steps. A good trick for runs is to get them within the first 24-48 hours using a straight razor and very carefully shaving the run down before wetsanding.
-
Looks pretty damn good. I always allow about 6-12 hours b/t sealer and base though. I have found that not giving it enough time will cause lifting or cracking. The air pressure is essential for a good spray!! It makes all the difference in the world. Also need to make sure the gun has been cleaner really well before base/clear. Sealer can get in every part of the gun and really clog up the air passages. Appears to have turned out well. May just take some wetsanding and buffing. I have never used fish eye reducer unless you are just referring to standard reducer. I have learned that spending the extra money on PPG or equivalent is definitely worth it too!!!! Can't wait to see the final outcome after cleaned up and reassembled
-
Engine bay light? Quite genius since you can unclip it and move around the bay to see. Too bad new cars don't have that type of thing
-
How long did you wait b/t the sealer and the base coat? What kind of gun are you using? HVLP? What pressure are you running? What kind of paint as well? I wish I was closer I would love to come spray this car. I have already made all the mistakes and now lay down a mighty fine paint job IMO My dad bought me a nice Devilbiss plus HVLP gun last year and it makes all the difference in the world. Now my clears don't need wetsanding!!!
