  1. No question there is a critical tension between disease control and the economic impact of keeping businesses closed. The questions are how to open the doors, and when. From what I have read, I have more comfort with a carefully staged and tiered opening than other approaches, but there needs to be evidence that the approach has a basis in science and practice. I am interested in hearing what the east coast and west coast governors' groups have to say after they've tapped the expertise in their regions. The Reuters article above that describes the process that Cuomo leads sounds especially promising! (Especially the effort to "Trump-proof" it.) But I think the economic squeeze is sufficient that a change could happen some time in May...could be early or late. I would place a substantial bet that it will be later than Trump wants. I frankly don't trust the Trump admin to listen to experts or use good judgment in their recommendation. My assumption is that Trump will ignore anyone who knows more than he does, make a "hunch" decision influenced by information from one of his toadies with a profit-making motive, and the outcome wouldn't be good. It's sad that I have to write that last sentence...but we're in a position where our governors need to help us guard against half-baked actions of the president.
  2. Back in 1918, all they had was a bandana or piece of cloth. Plenty of people are using the same now. I think we get on our high horse and want "special" equipment for everything. Heck, when I was in high school if you were training, running, lifting, playing basketball, your choice of shoes was: Converse Chuck Taylor high tops or low tops? Black or white? That was it. The only sports with special shoes were baseball, football and wrestling - and half the guys in wrestling wore Chuck Taylors as well. Now we have different shoes for everything...and I'm not convinced most amateurs are good enough to need them. We could be doing better and more people would wear some kind of mouth and nose covering if the health gurus had been willing to say "hey, a bandana over your nose and mouth is better than nothing." But no, everybody wants an M95 mask - and I probably won't even see one in my lifetime.
  3. Oh, lord a'mercy..... I see what you did there! Nice tweak to the fanatics.
  4. I assume they also created the common cold and helped Jimmy Hoffa disappear, too, right?
  5. People have an incredible ability to believe that they are inclined to believe, regardless of the reality in front of them. I've seen it all the time, and it's the only thing I can think of that explains Trump's support.
  6. Anyone else think this sounds like Godfather III with Michael asking his son to get out of the boat when Fredo goes out fishing?
  7. The G doesn't really stand for anything other than "generation." There are no specific standards for what a "G" is. About all we know is that 4G or 5G service in Europe is faster than 4G or 5G service in the US because of differences in bandwidth allocation. All 5G means is: "this is supposed to be faster than 4G." Not terribly technical, in any case.
  8. Sorry, sold just before your post. My apologies for taking until now to respond.
  9. Heart attack stats are irrelevant to how we combat CO-19. Can you tell me I'm wrong and support it with numbers? Of course not. I stand by the statement. It is not debatable.
  10. Regardless of whether or not CO-19 is the #1 cause of deaths in the US right now, the fact remains that we're individually better off staying away from close contact with others. Now, we all realize that this can't go on indefinitely. It would be a plus if I had faith in the current administration to believe that they are thoughtfully comparing strategies for exiting the lockdown, because we really need a thoughtful approach based on what is known and what is learned in the US and in other countries. There is no evidence that this is happening, and it should have been in the works for some time. Sweden has gotten a lot of press because of their tiered approach with lower risk people having more freedom of movement. Is it working? I think that's open to question, but whatinhell is the Trump admin doing to study it? Why aren't they they telling us about the kinds of studies they are doing instead of having the Cheeto in Chief do daily ego-stroking sessions? (Don't bother to answer, the Cheeto's insistence on ego boosting is the answer.) Regardless, we are going to have to change the rules for the lockdown before we run the economy too deep in the ditch. We need a well-researched, thoughtful way to start opening up the country, but not one that depends on the data "in here" (Trump's orange-tinted head, as per his recent press conference remarks.) Any competent administrator would have been working on this for weeks, and would make some attempt to tell the US what their plan is for gathering information and making decisions...or at least reassure us that they're working on such a plan. Instead we're waiting for Trump to find the data in his orange head ("in here...") and come up with some pasted-together overly simple idea. This is not promising.
  11. Wow... Just found this animated chart of COVID vs. other causes of death. Take a look, takes 20 seconds or so... https://public.flourish.studio/visualisation/1812248/?fbclid=IwAR2nmnJefJvZ40SgimD6vDDKOgUjWMUi3dYOraH7rsCu1T6FRxBue7u9Ck4

  14. That's bad news. There has been a general assumption that having had the virus and survived means that (a) it confers immunity from another infection, at least for some time, and (b) that you would not be contagious after the event. I'll wait for more info, but this sounds petty solid and prudence indicates assuming it's accurate until proven otherwise. You won't get hurt by assuming it's true; you might suffer from assuming it is not.
  15. Nice article. There's an assumption in that article that because similar viruses confer immunity after infection, that's also true with the CO-19 virus. That appears to be a logical inference, but I'm no sure it is proven yet.
  16. I'm all in for gin & tonic!! Fabulous idea! Incidentally, as I feared it would, the pace of people abandoning pets at animal shelters in fear they will catch CO-19 from their pets is increasing. Let me put the situation quite clearly, quoting my sister, who is a veterinarian of 40 years' experience: They may get it from you if you have an active case. You won't get it from them!!!
  17. It's not piling on. The pandemic has brought Trump's failures as a leader into focus. I am convinced that solutions will be found by good people who are highly motivated, and hopefully he won't impede implementation of those solutions for political reasons. https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2020/04/americans-are-paying-the-price-for-trumps-failures/609532/?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=share&fbclid=IwAR2HsDI_zFYE2bbnYZIkBTHbx20uNk9BrUyYEG2k2swsHjwtGLz_0uCdTcY
  18. It is not required to know the genesis of a disease outbreak like this. Helpful, but not required. I doubt much of the world is focused on that question at this point; it will be a subject of inquiry later, but right now other concerns are more urgent. At this point, my analysis of what people need to know is: how the disease is transmitted between humans (reasonably well understood), how to minimize its spread (not as well known), how to treat existing cases more effectively, and how/whether a vaccine can be developed. It would also be very helpful to determine whether having had the disease confers immunity to re-infection and confirm that those who have had the disease are not carriers.
  19. Look for "Morbidity and Mortality" reports. Those usually track stuff like this. And I think it's pretty obvious that the reports are deaths attributable to CO-19, not random deaths.
  20. Latest news flash: Trump and some of his associates have a small investment in the drug he is touting as a remedy for CO-19, hydroxychloroquine. It's not a big investment, but it's funny how this kind of things keeps coming up with Trump and his cronies. https://www.forbes.com/sites/lisettevoytko/2020/04/07/trump-has-small-distant-link-to-sanofi-french-drugmaker-of-hydroxychloroquine/#3c95bf807260
  21. Yes, that potential is obvious. I took that into account, which is the reason I re-wrote my post about four times before sending it. Your response just fans the flames, and in fact is incorrect. The situation would not be impossible, as I indicated by noting that vaccines for both humans and animals will be developed. This thread also notes work that has been done on this, and there is no evidence of transmission from animals back to humans. There are already too many people abandoning pets in this situation. I thought it relevant to note the concern - which I did - and to also make it clear that there is no reason to jump to conclusions.
  22. This morning, I read with concern the story of the tiger in the Bronx zoo having coronavirus, evidently contracted from a human zoo worker. That tiger is one of six showing symptoms. I don't know a darn thing about similarities between tiger and human physiology and health, other than we're both mammals., but if a disease crosses from human to animal, it's concerning and worth watching. I've spoken with my sister Pamela Powell DVM about this, and she tells me veterinary circles have been watching it for a while and are paying attention to it. We agree that this falls in the area of "watch for future developments," not "immediate threat." Hopefully this and a few other similar crossover events are outliers, and hopefully there isn't enough going on to be a threat to anyone. Keep in mind that just as science is working on CO-19 immunization for humans, veterinary research will be working on vaccines for animals. In other words, folks, DON'T start giving up your animals out of coronavirus fears. Remain calm, stay home, and take care of your loving animal friends. CNN Story
  23. If this guy were an employee of mine he'd be written up with a warning. One repetition and he would be fired.
  24. Sorry to hear it! Hope it's something less problematic and you feel better quickly.
  25. Clever!! Great way to get the feed to that tranny!! I've been using Amsoil gear oil in the tranny and rear end for a couple of decades; definitely made the transmission smoother shifting. I spent the last two days replacing front and rear pads and rotors on my '83 280ZXT. While I was at it I packed the front wheel bearings (an easy thing to overlook) and did a brake fluid flush. Incidentally, replacing the pads on that, especially the rears, is a bit of a jigsaw puzzle. You have to assemble the pads and clips and hold everything in place while rotating the brake pad retainer in place. If you have anti-chatter stuff on the shims, it's a bit messy and you have to watch that you don't get it on the rotors. This afternoon it should be about 40 degrees, and I'll take the ZX out to bed in the brakes.
