Stock E31 Head Factory Rocker Valve Guide "Lash Pad" Thickness
Sorry for the late reply. Johnathan, The adjustments where close, and could have been adjusted, but the rockers looked like it was better to just replace them. The valve stem tips where fine and I didn't see anything that concerned me. It would have been best for me to have the cam regrind or an upgrade, but it was smooth and so I left it as is. I'll try to take some pictures when I run it some more an take the valve cover off to recheck. Chickenman, The oil was changed about 100 miles/30 days prior to the rockers & guides being replaced with conventional Mobil Super 10w-30 and a Factory Blue Nissan Oil filter. I am planning on changing the oil this weekend. I've never cut open an oil filter before but have heard of it being done. As far as the air filter, I am not sure what brand they are. They were on the car when I purchased it. If things check out well, I'm going to be installing the triple Mikuni's and then choose a good filter setup. I've been thinking of cutting two factory air boxes to fabricate one long enough to fit the triples, and give it a factory look. we'll see. Zed, Not sure if it's from a regrind, but you could be right. I just want to point out that they seem very pronounced in the pictures, but the surface is very smooth and looks almost as if the chatters are laminated or under a clear surface where you can see them, but not feel them. Regardless, I decided to replace them. I didn't check the base circles on the Lobes as you mentioned, but that's a great suggestion. I think I will recheck after a few miles and see how things are wearing in and check the lash and go from there. If there's any doubt at that point, I'm going to save up and send the head to Datsun Spirit for a STD Series head work. So far, things sound very smooth, and the Z is running very strong. Thanks

Stock E31 Head Factory Rocker Valve Guide "Lash Pad" Thickness
Here are some pictures, I hope they come out clear. First thing I'd like to point out is that only two pairs of the rockers are stamped with the same number and the rest have complete different stamping's. (One pair pictured together.) Not sure if this is an issue, but they don't seem to be Nissan rockers let alone uniform part #'s. I'm much happier now knowing the new ones are all exactly the same. I arranged the rockers in wear pattern starting with the most centered wipe pattern to the least starting from the left. The rib like wear marks on the wipe surface look worse than they are, but are actually very smooth to the touch. It appears that the wipe was not clean or maybe to tight of an adjustment causing excessive wear or heat spots/marks?? The lash pads seem to have the most wear with significant wear in the center. Let me know if you guys need more pics or better ones. Zed, I read the link you provided. That's unreal. Who knows, but the wipe on some of the rockers are very similar. There are many levels of workmanship to everything in this world, and research really pays off in the end. I'm pretty meticulous generally and usually look for someone who matches or exceeds my capabilities so that I end up as satisfied as I can be.

Thanks guys. Zed, I knew what you meant, no harm. I agree, about it being razor's edge. Glad I changed it. I'll prob re-check it after I run it some more. I'll take a look at the link when I get home. Chickenman, I didnt use use flash but I'll make sure to get a good shot of them so it comes out clear with no reflections. I was trying to focus on the center wear line rather than the whole wipe, but I'll get it on the next shot of all of them lined up.

In the link provided, D240zx2 mentions that it threw a rod, so it must have been before or during his time. My guess is they replaced the block and reused everything since it's all still a series 1. The lobes looked fine with nothing that stood out. Motor is very strong and I've had no issues.

Yes, the marks in red are correct. I agree, it was best to change them out. The car used to belong to a member here, see link below. I purchased the Z in January, on Ebay from the person who purchased it from the member on this board. The car is now slightly different cosmetically from the link below. I replaced the aftermarket mirrors with a brand new, correct, driver side only unit. I've been mostly focusing on the engine bay and changing things to my liking as far as performance and the aesthetics of it. It's not a matching numbers car because it threw the #6 rod through the block prior to my ownership. The car was very well restored and I really lucked out on the purchase. Here's a picture of it now and one of the engine bay since my ownership. I replaced the MSA exhaust system with a Full Fujitsubo header and exhaust system, de-chromed the valve cover and wet blasted, re-plated hardware, and obviously the rockers and lash pads. I have a set of brand new old stock complete 40mm Triple Mikuni's i'm planning on installing next week so I'm very excited.

I think the reflection is making it seem that way. See picture below. You can see the wipe was more towards on the adjustment side. If I remember correctly, the exhaust rockers where more centered. I did check my wipe when installing the new ones by highlighting the rocker wipe surface with a red sharpie and hand rotating the cam. I'll try to take a pictures of all 12 and post them up.

Yes, I did check the valve lash before removing. It was close to spec but it could have used adjustment. I do agree with you that it would have been the better way to approach it, but I don't think it would have solved my problem unless I had different lash pad thicknesses to work with. There was a significant difference in thickness in the rocker wipe surface height vs the old one. Sorry I didn't measure. I think with adjusting it to spec, it would of required me to try different lash pads to get the correct wipe because of the taller rocker arm. I could be wrong, but If this is true, it would be the cheaper way to approach the problem. Buy a few lash pads in various thicknesses and adjust to see if you get the correct wipe pattern and hope the ticks goes away.

Zed Head, I removed the old rockers and lash pads and checked for wear and replaced with new parts. The old lash pads were genuine but looked different than the ones I purchased from Nissan. The old ones appeared to be thicker/taller, but the underside was recessed deeper than the new ones so it balanced out in height. The diameter of the new ones were slightly smaller which made me a bit worried at first, but they work perfectly fine. The parts are still available from Nissan in the US, but I'm not sure how many are left. I'll take some pictures of the old parts and post them up.

I inspected the lash pads and rockers and they were pretty worn, so I just decided to change out both. I would have had to have multiple lash pads in various thickness to compensate the worn out rocker arm to get the correct wipe. Since they were both new, with the correct valve settings the wipe was right on. Lumens, You are right. The correct thing would have been to do the cam as well, but the lobes where clean so I passed.

Thanks for all the help. I ended up changing out the rocker arms and lash pads with genuine Nissan parts and no more ticking whatsoever. I adjusted the valves to spec, checked the wipe pattern and it was all good. PS..I checked all the new rockers and lash pads before installation and only one rocker would not slide into the lash pad groove. I returned that one and ordered another and it fit like the rest. Just a heads up in case any one end up in purchasing new ones to check.

Thank you Zedhead. I think i'm going to check and adjust my valves to see if they are off spec first before I purchase anything. The link below is what lead me to the idea of changing out the rockers and pads with new ones would help quieting it down a bit. http://forums.hybridz.org/topic/106910-loud-tickingknocking-noise/ Thanks Chickeman. Great info and very helpful. I'll definitely check them before I do my adjustments.

Thanks Chickenman, looking forward to the info. You're right about the wipe pattern. I am only changing out the rockers and pads out, but I don't know if the valves have been replaced or ground prior to my ownership. I'm only doing this to quiet down the ticking sounds which I believe are the rockers contacting the pads.

Stock E31 Head Factory Rocker Valve Guide "Lash Pad" Thickness
Hi All, Does anyone know the factory rocker valve guide "Lash Pad" thickness for a completely stock E31 head? I have a few factory part numbers but not sure what thickness is the correct one. I've heard .118" & .120" 13218-21000 13218-Y7000 The numbers above might be the same part, but if anyone can help identify the correct thickness and part number, that would really help. Thanks.

Correct Finish on 2400 Valve Cover
Here are some pics of the valve cover after vapor blasting. Very time consuming and tiring process. It was more satisfying and easier doing the balance tube or any heavy grain casting vs a smoother surface like the valve cover. However, i'm very happy with the outcome and I think it looks very clean. I might coat it with Shark hide to protect it, but for now i'm glad I did it.

Correct Finish on 2400 Valve Cover
Sure Hardway, I'll post up some pics after its done. Memeber Gav240z has already had his done and can be seen in the following link. http://www.viczcar.com/forum/topic/11264-safari-brown-i-mean-gold-the-nsw-project/?p=171715 When I purchased my Z, it had a chrome plated valve cover which I had the plating professionally removed. See pictures attached of Chrome valve cover before and after. It looks pretty good now and has a very smooth finish, but I think it'll be more consistent in color after vapor blasting. I'll post pics after this weekend.
