  4. I may be looking to purchase a 240Z with a questionable 3rd gear syncro. I would like to keep the car as original as possible, but if a replacement tranny is going to be much cheaper than repairing the stock unit, where would be a good place to look? Thanks for any opinions options..

  11. Again, I am looking to buy within the next year or so, and trying to find GOOD Z is tough. The best places I have found so far are on THIS website for quality used Z's. My question is this: What is the best place to shop for a high quality used Z. Ebay is circumspect, and Hemmings, has very few choices. I figure the best way to find a good quality Z is to ask around here. Any opinions? I am looking to spend between 8k and 13k on a car that can be driven and enjoyed for a few years, and that does not need a frame off restoration. Basically I want a car that I can upgrade and restore because I want to, not because it needs it. I would like to take a high quality car and make it great. I do not plan on a show car restoration, but rather a restoration with updates. Like I said, so far the classifieds section on this website is rich with for sale examples. But I have found some of the best cars in my life through word of mouth. I am waiting for somebody who knows these cars to know about one for sale, that is worth driving out to see. Just testing the waters, I will actually be ready to buy in as little as 6 months.
  12. SoopA, when you say your ready to start your career, it sounds like your ready to start your hobby. It sounds like you signed up for some GI bill, and are thinking the signing bonus is going to be enough to finance you. It simply will not. Your car as it sits is fast enough. Add the safety devices required and then put ALL your time into you. Your going to be the greatest limiting factor of driving the car quickly. One the car is mechanically sound, you will need to elevate yourself first and foremost. The key to be fast is not to slap parts on a car but to learn about vehicle dynamics, learn about tires and what they can and cannot do. Learn about how to read a course map and study a track. Driving as a hobby is greatly rewarding and fun for a lifetime. But a career is best left to those who are financially backed by copious amounts of money. Whether that money comes from sound investments and hard work, mommy and daddy, or a huge corporate sponsorship. It costs to go fast. The greatest benefit I can ever stress on you is to improve what you know about driving a car and then practice it over and over. Seat time is gold.
  13. I see many Z's with the tacky (in my honest opinion) side molding to prevent a door ding. I see other with it off and the whole car looks much cleaner. I was wondering if that side molding is held on with sticky 3M type of product, or is it riveted in and will require the holes to be filled.

    honestly, it sounds like your leaning out. Your carbs may need to be richened up a bit to accommodate the larger displacement. It starts and idles fine but the second you give it gas it stumbles. Sounds like an accelerator pump issue, or jetting. How do the plugs look? The tail pipe? I would set the timing per the factory spec and then try to only adjust one thing at a time. Your lucky that you can get it to idle, its much easier to troubleshoot a running engine. Personally I would start with checking to see if your getting the right amount of fuel off idle.
  15. Agreed. You have done so much work up to this point, it would be a shame not to get the head checked for straightness. Its relatively painless and inexpensive. But to not do it, may mean that all your work is in vain.
  16. cebu, I am a new member, and I am 34 and still do not have my first Z. I am in looking to buy in the next 18 months, and will of course I will get the best example I can find in the 48 states. However, I have built more engines, in more cars that I care to talk about. I cut my teeth on everything from a Datsun 510, to a handful of Camaros and Trans Ams, to Integras, and now I am a died in the wool Subaru Fan. One thing that I learned a long time ago, is this universal truth about cars... "Horsepower costs money, how fast do you want to go." Its your first car, and like most 17 year old testosterone filled males you feel you want more HP. I could try to talk you out of it, but I know its a fruitless exercise. Instead I will say this. Since you are new to cars, you have to first walk before you can run. You have an engine in your possession that has many miles on it with unknown amounts of wear on all its parts. The first thing, I will tell you to do is do a compression test. Then do a leak down test. How is the oil pressure of the engine. What is the condition of the timing chain? water pump? How is the valve lash? What do the spark plugs look like, and how hot/cold does the car run? These are all important questions, as you cannot build HP on a sick engine. After everything about your current configuration is known, then you can start to push it, but not before. As if you go add power to an engine that is not up to the task, then you will quickly find the weakest link. One thing that building cars has taught me is that a performance car is not one dimensional. If you say you want 300 HP, then I will ask you, what brakes your running, and what condition is the suspension. What kind of tires are on your car, and what is their condition? What I am trying to get at that 300 HP from a car that had roughly half of that is a tall order. You must realize that the farther you get from stock, the more unreliable and temperamental your car will be. You will NOT build a High HP car without it needing more maintenance, tweaking, service. If you do not understand how to do basic maintenance, you will not be able to maintain your High HP beast. Another universal truth about cars, that I WISH somebody would have told me when I was 17.. "Its always more fun to drive a slower car at 10/10s, than a fast car at 7/10s" Meaning a peaky High HP car will not be nearly as enjoyable moderately tuned reliable near stock HP car. I wish you luck with your car, but learn about it before you mod it. I know patience is not in large supplies for any 17 year old, but in time you will realize that their is truth in my words. Some day I hope to get my Z and be able to contribute more to this thread, as there is a level of maturity here that I can relate to. Also, one last note. Try to make an effort to spell things correctly, capitalize the letter "I", and avoid using text abbreviations. Most people will take you more seriously when you use proper grammar. Again Good Luck.
  17. My 4th Subie was a 2.5 GT limited sedan.. to this day it was the best car I have ever owned. My STI is great, but it lacks some of the comfort. The Legacy is 80% of the performer the STI was, and was so nice inside. On day I will grow up and sell the STI, but for now, its just too much of a supercar killer at the autocross
  18. I have long been a Subaru fanatic. I am on my 6th Subaru right now a 2006 STI, that has some tasteful and effective mods... but with our new house comes a third bay and I have thought long and hard on what my new project car will be. With approval from the wife and my new 3 week old son, I have wittled it down to the 240Z. As so many of you know, its just the perfect combination of everything that makes a car a classic. Great performance Reasonable Buy In price Availability of parts Interchangeability of parts Classic design that will never age On the upswing of collector cars Racing Heritage The Z has passed all other cars I have considered for the combination of collector car/project car rights. I had my eyes set on building a 1973 911 RS clone, but the costs and availability of parts is through the roof. From my research, Z parts are more affordable. Aftermarket community is amazing for this car, and I look forward to picking your brains for the next couple of years. My first task is going to be to find the best example I can of a 69-73 Z. I need to learn the differences between the two. I have already ordered the how to build and modify L series engines, and the bible of how to restore your classic Z car. I have catalogs on the way, and plan to saturate myself in Z knowledge for the next 12 months. I am eagerly looking for my first Z that I plan to take to Resto-mod status. Very stock looking with minor upgrades to the engine, braking, suspension. The interior, I mostly plan to leave stock, perhaps a new steering wheel, perhaps not. The car does not need body kits, wings, etc. The lines are about as close to perfect as the lines of the 911. Its an automotive Icon, and represents much of what I love about cars. My first car I ever drove was a 4 door 1970 Datsun 510 that I absolutely loved. Great car, fun engine. I wish I was more knowledgeable about cars then, as I would have held onto that beauty. But I will send out a huge hello and thank you in advance for all the questions, I will be asking you. As far as finding my first Z, seems this is one of the best places on the net to find one. I cannot wait to jump in head first. Come on guys, help me find my first Z
