  1. I am getting this one looked at by a professional Z mechanic well known in Houston. His prices are VERY reasonable. Basically cheaper than if I were to ship it back to Zcarsource and back. So I am giving him a try. I am feeling a bit shameful. I was going to install my Type A and then take my time and rebuild this one, but there is a track day on the 29th I am trying to get into. Since I sold my 2013 Golf R and bought a 2013 F150 King Ranch 4x4 this week, My Z is my only track toy. I just do not have time in the next 2 weeks to rebuild it. But my search for a 5 speed continues. MJR 45 I will give you a PM. I am interested in yours. I simply cannot find a 5 speed locally. But I end game plan is to snatch one up some day. They turn up when you are NOT looking for them.
  2. Will do, Dropped it off at Awesome Z in Houston. Doug is going to take a look at it. He is probably one of if not the most knowledgeable guy in Houston on these cars.
  3. I took a look at my old Type A transmission that ran quiet in reverse and every other gear except for a whine in 3rd, which I think all of these things do. The output shaft splines of that one (71k miles) moved far more than the one I just took out. So I think some movement is normal. With the driveshaft yoke inserted it moves much less. With that being said, I found a local Z specialty shop in Houston that has lots of experience with these transmissions. He is going to look at it and give me a final diagnosis on reverse and every other gear. I am happy to report that, as all the guys in the local Z club give this company very high marks. So hopefully within a week I will get an answer.
  4. I recently purchased a 'new' 71 center console from MSA as mine had a small crack in it and I wanted to see if it was as they described. this is the add A damaged or aged center console can take a lot away from your interior. Fortunately, we were able to get the 70-71 version repoduced in fiberglass after Nissan discontinued the original 240Z center consoles. Note: This console can be modified to fit 70-71 models equipped with an automatic transmission. Please call for details. Now what this does not tell you is that the openings for the choke cables and defroster button were cut by hand, NOT a machine as none of the edges are straight and none of the corners sharp, but rather an uneven rounded shape. now things may still fit, but you will be required to do some sanding and grinding. The shape seems close, which is good, and they even made it so the damned fusebox STILL will not easily go through the metal support and the fiberglass top on the front, just like the OEM console. I mean really you could have improved this!!! The biggest complaint is the texture, or lack of. This pitted and semi smooth fiberglass, it has NO texturing at all, and it must be painted to be black, as it is more grey. so with that being said, is there a good way to get some kind of texture on this thing with a spray can? I will dig through the dashboard restoration threads for any clues, but this may be good enough for a dedicated thread. Pics to follow.
  5. Sound advice that I will start to use more often. Looks like I will be doing some phone shopping soon at the local pic and pull.
  6. Wow, that is a lot to digest, but it made sense, thanks for the education sir. This will be my first trip into manual transmissoin land. I have always treated transmissions like total replaceable units, so I am kind of looking forward to messing with one. What I meant by calling it a transmission output flange is the input flange from the drive shaft into the rear of the transmission. I can move that up and down.
  7. THe 240SX idea just sounds like more than I want to tackle right now. Perhap though after I get my OEM one back in, I will look and give it a whirl.
  8. It is an option. For now, my plan is to put my Type A back in the car. I will then open up my b type to see what is wrong with reverse. After that, I will decide what to do. But I cannot have the Z not running through some of the prettiest months of the year!
  9. I am in WANT of a 5 speed for my 71 Z. The current Type B four speed I bought from zcarsource and the reverse gear has knocked since day one. They offered to fix it for a fee if I ship it to them. I am was inclined to ship it but once you calculate shipping there and back and then the price for fixing it (he was going to work with me on the repair price) not sure I am not better off doing something else. I have my orginal 4 speed that was smooth since day one, just it was a sloppy shifting Type A unit. It worked, but the B types shifting feel is so much better. I could put the A type unit back in. Since I know the B type problems are isolated to the Reverse shaft, I figured I could repair that easy enough. It is only ONE shaft, how can it be. Or I could purchase another transmission, from Datsunparts LLC. Who I have never done business with ever. Partly because of the reviews here, and partly because of the prices. Can I trust this guy? I know this is a can of worms, but I would really like any constructive criticism or complements.
  10. Well I contacted the vendor I purchased the transmission from. It is LONG out of warranty, but I wanted to see what he would do with it. He agreed to fix it, at my cost, once I sent it to him. The car transmission is definitely NOT happy moving in reverse. I wonder if I could fix this myself. I have my original 4 speed unit that came with my car. It is a type A transmission with the wonky shifter feel, but it never let me down. I may put that one back in, and try to repair this one. That way I have two spares while I am looking for a proper 5 speed. Datsun parts LLC has a 5 speed right now but I have read reviews from other people here and it scares the crap out of me. I have already bought one bodged up transmission from one vendor, I do not need another. any anybody tell me if they have had any GOOD experience with Datsun parts LLC. Perhaps I should start another thread.
  11. Look into the Mallory fuel pump on summit or jegs. It is internally regulated at around 3 psi and is VERY quiet.
  12. Great questions. It does seem to have gotten louder the last time I back it out. I have felt some vibration while driving it that I don't recall. I assumed a tire was giving me grief, but I had them rebalanced and they were fine, but a little under inflated. Still I can feel it in the chassis, but not the wheel. No shifting into reverse or any other gear has never been hard.
  13. Every since I put in this type B transmission I have and a clunking in reverse that corresponds to speed that I hear every single time I back up and it is by far worse when cold. Never fully goes away though. I was going to do a fluid change just for kicks today. drained the fluid, no signs of a leak anywhere, in fact it was very clean still. Keep in mind this was a rebuild from zcarsource I installed before my rally. IT shifts fine and drives fine. But it has always clunked when in reverse backing up. Clunk, clunk, clunk, clunk when I back up. The fast I back up the faster it clunks. Never had this issue ever with my old Type A transmission that came with the car. So, It made this clunking with the old OEM diff an the new STI diff. When I checked the drive shaft ujoints (same drive shaft I have always used) It feels great and solid. NO slack in the joints. But the output flange of the drive shaft that interfaces with the splines of the transmission moves up and down in my hand a bit. You can see it, feel it and hear it. I know the input shaft to the transmission has some movement, no worries there, but I am pretty sure the output shaft is not suppose to move, nor is there suppose to be any slop on the spline interface to my knowledge. When I move it up and down it sounds like the source of my clunk, clunk, clunk (nice onomatopoeia huh?) So In you guys memory, is this output flange suppose to have any movement? This is just a dandy excuse to get a 5 speed sooner...
  14. You mean we should do exactly what the brain damaged 911 people are doing? 130k for a longnose carrera S is just pure insanity.
  15. Mike, I will be ordering one of these was well. It is just too sweet not to try.
  16. Mike this thread is epic, you KNOW I am about to buy this right. I love being able to switch out my curves and maximize my ignition advance where possible without having to pull the dizzy time and time again. I will PM you with more details. YOu are right, 550 is chump change for a great working dizzy.
  17. PM me for that dash if nix 240Z does not pick it up. I will buy it. Period. EDIT: Are there any difference between the 72 dash dash and the 71? EDIT of my EDIT: I do not care, PM me.
  18. The cover for the Datsun cover will definitely fit the STI diff cover. I can tell you that for certain. I forgot why I removed the half shafts, probably just to get them off and clean them. But also they may have been in the way to my exhaust. I wanted to install new high strength steel bolts and nuts in there that were clean and freshly cad plated as well.
  19. is the R160 the same externally as the R180? Is this going into a Z?
  20. For any normally aspirated car, for the most part, looking for huge gains in intakes, is a waste of time. AS long as their is not a huge restriction I would buy would will provide the cleanest air, and what is easiest to service, and what looks the best. IF you net 2 HP more from a cold air set up, you will never notice it. I have chased Cold air intakes on other cars for years, and most of it is placebo. Go with what you like, and makes you smile when you pop the hood
  21. When I installed my RX7 pump it was only putting out about 2 psi on my fuel system, your results may vary, but I went with an internally regulated Mallory pump and it was very quiet and puts out 3.5 psia reliabily.
  22. I demand pictures of that interior please. I have been considering a red interior to my 901 silver Z. Ever since I saw that singer 911 in silver/red. I have been hooked.
