The great TEXAS Z Car (and foreign Car) rally - 2011
So, Ben is out and Zcurves is out. Going to miss you guys. I put down the money for all the shirts today, but I still have to buy the actual shirts. If you are not planning on going , please find a way to reimburse me for the shirts you requested. Or let me know and I will just not buy one and ask for a refund on the labor. I wanted to be able to pay for eveything up front, but the additions and subtractions are getting tough to deal with. I certainly do not want to start mailing shirts to people. I am sorry for that. I just am running out of time lately. I really want to do right by you guys...I am trying my best to make this a fun event.

High compression N/A build question
My advise is this. I have assembled a ton of engines in the past (albeit all ford and chevy V8's and a few lawnmowers). Do not get hung up on 200 HP or 194 HP or any HP number. Keep many things in mind. This is a daily driver, so having it run predictably and reliably should be of paramount performance. To get an L24 to hit 200 HP is going to take two things. A big cam and lots of compression. It is a balancing act really. Which means one thing. LOTS of tuning. If your into that, then great...but high strung engines require constant maintenance. What is FAR more important is getting all the components, from the oil pump to the air filter to be matched to work together as a system, and not fight each other. A well matched engine that is tuned perfectly that puts out 180 HP will be FAR more enjoyable than a temperamental 200 HP motor that is always on the ragged edge of pinging, and can't idle and overheats. Think robustness and reliability. And think part matching. You are going with triples, they excel at higher RPM operation. Great, this goes with your larger cam. You will need a head that can flow well with as smooth a combustion chamber as you or your machinist can make. This will help mitigate detonation. A cam with a huge overlap between the exhaust and intake valves will eat into your overall compression. Any large cam will make your idle somewhat worse and compromise your power brakes in repeated stop and go driving as they just do not pull that much vacuum. Growing up I was always the guy with the car that always ran, and was always fast. I never had the most money, but I buried my head in books and learned about the engines I was building from a basic level. What I learned is that money spent without knowledge is wasted. THe L series of engines were like coming home to me. The part interchangeability rivals the Small Block Chevy. Which is impressive. You can build quite the hot rod using nothing but OEM Datsun parts. I hope that helps.

Fuel pressure adjustment on stock fuel pump
UPDATE: I installed my new pump and it gives me about 3 psi at idle, I had to kill it before I woke up my kid, as I fired it up in the garage at 10pm! So I gained at least a half PSI. That may or may not make a difference, but before I tinker anymore with the timing or carbs, I have to get my fuel pressure up to snuff. by the way, I am using a rather inexpensive dual vacuum/fuel pressure gauge. Not sure how accurate it is. It is also close to 20 years old..

Frank I will get you a button shirt from old navy when I get my shirts. The rest of us will get polo shirts. Frank was the first guy to ever help me out in the classic z world in Houston. I am happy to help

I am going to up the ante for these shirts guys. I found a place that will digitize the logo for 40 bucks ( I will eat that myself ) and then charge about 15 bucks to embroider this logo on any shirt we want. I plan to hit up old navy for some polo shirts, which are about 12 dollars to 20 dollars each. If you have a very special request, let me know SOON. Frank if you need a button up shirt let me know or will a nice polo do? The cost of the shirts will be the embroidery fee plus the cost of the shirt, I plan on making Zero dollars off this.

Fun at a Drivers edge track event this weekend
I totally agree. I want to get a nice matched set of bars for my car. Either energy suspension, or MSA kit. But as you know we need to do some work to even mount a rear bar. I am looking for a complete kit to mount the rear bar and a front bar. I already have a set of tokiko springs and struts that are more than a match for my all season bridgestones. I will follow your threads very closely from now on buddy!

I have only considered Tee's, long sleeve and short sleeve, but I can check into embroidered Polos or button shirts if you like.

I thought I heard something other than a set of SU's on there! Sweet sounding engine! I was going to ask you about your sway bar situation, but when I read coilovers, I totally understood.

I have a few designs I am looking at and getting prices on, but I have having a heck of a hard time finding somebody that will produce a small quantity without charging me over 20 bucks a shirt. I do not mind making the initial outlay of money if I know I can at least break even. How much would you guys be willing to pay for a Datsun shirt if it had this on the front left pocket:

power cones for roundtop carbs
I like the percentage gains/losses shown, but at what airflow was that calculated? Across the board, or at what RPM was the percentage power gain/loss measured for a stock 240Z with SU's, a 5.5% increase in power would be around 7 HP. That is not totally trivial. You would probably notice your car feeling a bit more 'spritely' with that.

Mid Range RPM Hesitation
When I first installed my Z therapy carbs it pulled like a freight train to 6700 rpm. I see no reason my floats should need adjustment. Bruce had them set perfectly the day I installed them

Mid Range RPM Hesitation
Hey guys I have the same issue as landmizzle for a while. In fact we should compare notes mizzle! I put a fuel pressure gauge in line to carb one and my stock pump was only putting out 2.5 psi. I have since ordered a new pump and will replace it next. I have new Z therapy carbs which I just balanced and a newly rebuilt and recurved dizzy from advanced distributers. Running new plugs and new coil and a freaking new balast resister that I am bypassing anyway! My car still is very unhappy revving past 4500 rpm. Check your fuel pressure bud. I wonder if it will help you out. I certainly hope it helps me! Let's double team this one mizzle !
