Thats downright weird. I'm running the Pertronix in my '72 Zed and my tach works fine. I did have a problem with intermittant cutout above 5000 rpm but it was a bad Pertronix unit. The new one has worked just fine since I exchanged it under warranty a couple weeks ago. I'd guess the problem is somewhere with the tach or it's associated wiring perhaps? Greg
  2. Yes, you are correct. Blue/white goes to 86. I figured that out when I was doing mine and asked Dave Irwin about it and we determined there was a mistake in the original posting with the pin assignments, but apparently it hasn't been fixed yet on the site. Blue/white is the ground reference for the relay when it is turned on. Pin 86 is the ground point of the relay. Greg
  3. As the saying goes, there is no substitute for cubic inches! Greg

Just to clarify that the 12v on the relay is only with the key on!! Obviously with the key off every terminal should have 0v. The rest of my post applies. I still need to check my notes for if it is pin 85 that stays at 12v or not though. Will update. Greg

The relay should have 12v on all the terminals until the switch is turned on. Once it is turned on, only the terminal 85 should have 12v. (I think thats the one, have to check my notes at home) The others with the exception of terminal 86 (ground) will all have .4v, 2.8v, or varying voltages depending on wiper speed. Check to see if the switch activation causes the voltages to change. Greg
  6. Yah, there are still some Volvo 1800's floating around....a lot in this area due to IPD. Its a fun car and a lot more solid than the Z, but a completely different experience driving it. Greg
  7. I'll have to see what kind of job they could do on my Volvo 1800S. Nice and close and if prices are reasonable and work is good, sounds like a deal. If they do good work, then I can take my Z into them too when the time comes. Thanks Gary! Greg

I'd say in the US we just kept with our WW2 philosophy.....make lots of something even if it wasn't the best......seems like GM, Ford, and Chrysler still do that! Make lots of big huge vehicles that people don't want or need. LUCAS stands for: Let US Create A Short. Lucas = Prince of Darkness My '69 Volvo 1800S has Smiths gauges and Lucas electrics....yuck to both...haha. Probably ok when new though. Greg
  9. I wonder if Hugh has one from the 240 he wants to part out...... He should be at the vintage races this weekend at PIR.....if he doesn't maybe someone else does. I'll be there but I don't have any extra tanks meself... Greg
  10. Gary, maybe you can show me these two places at our next meet so Ic an try to fix my issues on my '72? Going to be there at PIR on wednesday? Greg
  11. Yeah Steve Epperly @ Ztherapy is great!! I got a rebuild kit for my Hitachi/SU's from him and the car ran much better, and then I drove down there last weekend and he helped me get my chokes working right. Really nice guy and he's very knowledgeable about all things Datsun. Some cool race cars at his shop too along with LOTS of parts. Greg

If the above don't fix it, then call Pertronix. They were very helpful when I called them. Greg
  13. Does the one you got yesterday look like the picture in my post # 28? If so, that is the incorrect one as I noted. The correct one has 3 lugs and is either from the '91 Civic or thereabouts or from a similar era Accord. The correct Civic one will mount up to the Z wiper arm without grinding the shaft, and the Accord one needs the shaft to be ground, but is a stronger motor. The "spider" style one with 4 lugs is the incorrect motor and will not work, even though it may be on some 1991 Civics. You should try to go to a yard where you can pull the part yourself as if you ask someone for a motor from a 1991 Civic it may be incorrect. If you can't find a yard like that, then try to take that one back and ask for one from a 1991 Accord. It should have the 3 lugs and you'll have to hook it up to the relay and wiring harness and make sure it is in the park position, and then grind the shaft down to fit in the Z. Greg
  14. Read the beginning of the thread to the end and you'll find it, but here, I've posted it again. 70' Datsun 240Z __________________ 91' Honda civic wiper motor blue/white-------pin 85 ________ Pin 87A-------blue/white blue-------------pin 87 ________ pin 30--------blue Blue/red-----------pin 85-------pin 85----------green/black Black----------------------to------------------black Blue/yellow----------------to-------------------blue/yellow There were some diagrams that he posted on post #22 for Hella relays, and some other types, and these showed the connections. From the harness in the car, it goes into the relay, and then from there into the new harness for the Honda motor. There are a couple terminals as showen above that don't go to the relay and go straight through also. When I did it, it helped to draw up exactly what I needed to do on a piece of paper showing the wires going from one point to another. My setup is slightly different because I'm incorporating a delay wiring circuit that I still need to build, but overall this conversion is pretty easy and works well. Greg

The 4 speed and 5 speed ratios should be reversed. The 4 spd is the 3:36 and the 5 spd is 3:9. Greg

    Sound clips? Greg
  17. Thanks for the info Jonnyrock, I'll checking into them. Greg
  18. Thats pretty cool...I'd never heard of them. Where are they located in the Portland area? Greg
  19. The Honda wiper motors don't have the same bolt holes as the Datsun one. You have to drill into your mounting plate so you can mount the Honda motor to it. Once you do, and if you got the Accord one and ground down the shaft, then it is a matter of wiring it up according to Dave's wiring diagram and it works just fine. If you got the correct Civic one it should fit without grinding, but you still have to drill the three mounting holes in the plate. The only thing that I can think of is that something must be wired wrong or something is wrong with your switch. Greg
  20. How do you get the gauges out of the dash? I was thinking of doing this too butit looks like a major job to get those gauges out. Greg
  21. The green strap is so you can hang yourself if someone runs into your Z.
  22. I've got this problem with my '72 also. Makes it really hard to drive smoothly. I'd eventually like to go to a cable setup but am not sure how to go about that. In the meantime I got an extra bellcrank to mess with so maybe I can mod it and have it work out of the box......not bloody likely but worth a try. Greg
  23. Hey Gary, thanks for the heads up. Yah, I'll meet you guys at the Arco. Looking forward to it! Greg
  24. Sweet! I'm several years away from that point for my Z, and will have to get my Volvo 1800S painted and back on the road before the Z, but I'm already jealous! It will be cool to see the car in person at the show. Greg
  25. The worrisome part is that there isn't really anything to stop the governments of the world from introducing legislation to make the older cars have to live up to modern car pollution standards. That would screw a lot of people who are into the classics over for sure. Greg
