Got what i hope to be a quick question... A little history first. I have been slowly refreshing my 72 240, the car sat after being a daily driver for 15 years in the new mexico sun. I dropped the gas tank had it cleaned replaced all fuel lines from the rear forward new plugs wires, coil, filters and fluids. I wasn't getting sufficent fuel so I got a new fuel pump from msa. car still wouldnt start... Thought I needed to send in the carbs for a rebuild but i couldnt afford it so I got bummed. Anyway after more research I found the fuel lines under the SU's to be clogged. cleaned them out and POOF! the car ran. It sounded like $^!# so after closer examination there was no fuel getting from what i think is a fuel regulator or something to that bottom hose hence to the rear carb. I tried carb cleaner to no avail. the cleaner will go from the vapor return line on top of that regulator out the bottom but not from where the fuel goes in out the bottom. So after that long winded explanation... can i use a pipe cleaner on that mechanism or should i just try to keep soaking it in carb cleaner? or is there a better way to clean it out. I am completly unfamiliar with carbs... much less SU's, so any advice would help. thanks in advance, slo

thank you all... help is on the way from MSA... we shall soon see as i will have a new pump soon! thanks again and im sure i will have more questions when we bridge this gap

well, i tried all of the above and i have a new question... got the car to "almost" fire up finally starting fluid almost got it to work so i assume fuel is getting to the carbs but not through them. my big question is, when i was checking for the gas getting to the carbs, it took a few revolutions of the starter to get fuel to squirt out. After trying to start the car for a bit, fuel would start to drip out of what looks like little weep holes in the fuel pump and soak the alternator:eek: is this some crazy overflow valve in the fuel pump or should i replace it? gas on an alternator just doesnt seem like a good idea to me, but then again who knows. thanks in advance

thanks to all! I still have not been able to get her to fire, but am not giving up. Had some issues with work and such but am going to have some time for my little lady this weekend. I fear that it has something to do with the adjustment of the carbs as i have pretty much followed the info i found on this site to a tee. My father s going to come help me mess with the distributor on sunday but if we cant get adjusting that to work, do you all have any advice on tuning the carbs? Maybe an old thread that has good info that you could point me to. Again, thanks so much in advance

so... long day framing walls at work and still no replies?? Do i not have enough info in my original post or should i go over to my garage with the car in it to take some pictures? I was pretty confident that the car would start with new plug wires. Could it be something completly stupid? I am at a loss and could really use some sage advice.. Thanks again

Ok... I have been trying to get my 72 240 started and i am definatly taking the long road. Work wont let me spend enough time with her but here is where i am at. i have replaced all fuel lines, fuel filter ect. i dropped in a battery after flushing all fluids and new plugs. car was turning over but no start. I was getting fuel, but no spark. in order to try and avoid wasting time i ordered NGK 8m wires, point, and new crane ps40 coil from motorsport. I installed the wires first... no spark. Point next, still nothing. Coil next and we have spark but no start. I installed the resistor that came with the coil just like the original one was wired and it started smoking after a few start attempts:eek:. I removed the new resistor and put the original back on and no smokey. My distributor looked extremly advanced so I tried retarding it a little. still nothing. I am very inexperienced in electrical matters... and this is my first datsun so any ideas or advice is appreciated. I did alot of searcing on the board but came up with nothing i could use. If there are any how to's on timing, setting the points or anything else i should do but cant find, please let me know. I really want to hear the car run:love: thanks in advance

Thanks so much for the input... I will attempt to evaluate the distributor and the coil first thing tomorrow. i will keep u all posted as i am sure more questions will arise, as my name implies... i am a little sloLOL

sblake01, If i do not own a volt meter is there another way to test it that is relatively safe (i.e. finger getting shocked, arc to screwdriver, ect)? or would a volt meter come in handy later and be a pretty sound investment for the rest of this project. I am on a shoestring budget for the next couple of months:cry: so the less i buy that doesn't go directly into the z the better.

as far as i know it is stock. How would I check if there is power to the coil? The cannister looking thing on the driver side wheel well was getting warm when I was trying to start it so I assume it is getting power. and the distributor is spinning so I assume it has power as well. Let me know if you have any ideas

well.... i got the starter to start turning the engine over the problem ended up being the dirty/corroded connections (not really sure which one) now on to the next problem. no spark:ermm: when i got the starter to engage, i made sure that i was getting fuel to the front of the car. next, i made sure that fuel was getting to the carbs. but still no luck getting her to start. I pulled a few of the plug wires to try to get them to arc to the block but no luck. i pulled the cap off the distributer and the rotor is moving as it should so now I am stuck again. so... is there an easy way to determine if it is the wires or the distributor, or is there something else i am missing. the wires seem to be in pretty good shape and i hooked up an 8mm magnecor wire that i had from my rover and it did not spark either. as far as i can tell the distributor seems to be newer than the rest of the engine so could there be another culpret? :bandit: Thanks in advance

more noob questions... what is the small relay box under the dash on the passenger side. It is mounted on the right wall of the footwell and it is where the click comes from when i turn the key in the ignition. all of my other connections look good so my next step is to take off the starter and test it. but i was wondering if it could have something to do with that small relay box in the footwell.

the Z is a 72 240... the battery is brand new, but should i be jumping it as well? I am very new to Datsuns so where would I find the fuses or corroded connections?
  14. slo929 posted a post in a topic in Help Me !!
Well work has been getting in the way so I have been taking it slow on my project. A brief overview of where the Z stands today. after sitting for 15 years, I pulled my families Z from the dirt grave it sat in and started looking at it. She has had the gas tank dropped, boiled out, the supply line in the tank replaced and then stripped and repainted. I have eliminated the evap tank following the great posts I found on this site and everything looks great. I cleared and cleaned all of the metal fuel lines leading to the front of the car and replaced all of the rubber lines as well. the car has new coolent, fresh oil, new oil filter, new fuel filter, new spark plugs and a new battery. The engine is not frozen as I can turn it over by hand. I tried turning her over yesterday (with the key) but got no response from her.my initial reaction was thinking I need to replace the starter right away but are there any other areas i should look into first? (wiring, fuses, ect.) I am getting a very faint click when I turn the key. Also it would probably be good to mention that as far as electrical systems go, the only thing that seems to work is the Hazard lights maybe the car is trying to tell me somethingLOL any input would be great. I am trying to get the car running well enough to move it to my new house before I close on selling the house it is in right now. thanks again

well I have finished preping the fuel tank and have repainted it and reinstalled it (minus the evap tank). I cleared and cleaned all of the metal fuel lines leading to the front of the car and replaced all of the rubber lines as well. the car has new coolent, fresh oil, new oil filter, new fuel filter, new spark plugs and a new battery. I tried turning her over yesterday but got no response from her.my initial reaction was thinking I need to replace the starter right away but I am going to ask the board what other culprits there could be to look at first.

well I got the tank back from the radiator shop with the new fuel supply line installed correctly (the original clogged one had holes in it after the tank was cleaned out) so thanks for the input once again. Another question though. I have a nice 2 inch piece of galvanized tubing that I could use to replace the plastic piece in the filler neck. It is the exact size as the original plastic 3/8 tube but will the galvanized metal last (or have some strange reaction to gas?) in that spot? Most people used copper and I have a bunch of 1 inch pieces of copper, but they just seem too short. any input would be great.

Thanks! It is going to be quite a project :rambo: I got the gas tank out and down to bare metal... <a href="http://s305.photobucket.com/albums/nn219/slo929/?action=view&current=DSC01734.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i305.photobucket.com/albums/nn219/slo929/DSC01734.jpg" border="0" alt="Stripped Gas tank"></a> <a href="http://s305.photobucket.com/albums/nn219/slo929/?action=view&current=DSC01735.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i305.photobucket.com/albums/nn219/slo929/DSC01735.jpg" border="0" alt="bottom tank"></a> it will be back from the radiator shop tomorrow and i will get started coating it then painting it.

unfortunatly i had already shop vac'd the tree debris and dirt off the car by the time i started taking pic's of the car. I also had pretty well cleaned up the entire engine compartment:stupid: i gotta lot of really random stuff out from under the bonnet, wish i had pic's now... but hindsight is 20/20 right? anyway, here's one of the engine. <a href="http://s305.photobucket.com/albums/nn219/slo929/?action=view&current=DSC01731.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i305.photobucket.com/albums/nn219/slo929/DSC01731.jpg" border="0" alt="Engine Start Left"></a>

The passenger side does have some rust behind the door. This side of the car was deeper in the dirt than the drivers side. :stupid: <a href="http://s305.photobucket.com/albums/nn219/slo929/?action=view&current=DSC01728.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i305.photobucket.com/albums/nn219/slo929/DSC01728.jpg" border="0" alt="Passenger side"></a> And close up. <a href="http://s305.photobucket.com/albums/nn219/slo929/?action=view&current=DSC01729.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i305.photobucket.com/albums/nn219/slo929/DSC01729.jpg" border="0" alt="Rust"></a> Oh yeah...
