I had wondered if anyone had rallied a S130, no-one down south at least that I've ever found. It appears that the 280Z in Oz is hearsay only. I'm guessing that these so-called 280Z's are actually either HS-30 or RS-30 bodies with a L28 engine dropped in and called a replica for various reasons. There is a CAMS Logbooked HS-30 with a 280FI engine that is logbooked as a 280Z as a HRC [Historic Rally Car] down this way , it is a 280Z in name only as it was built from a 72/3 body. More recently quite a few RS-30's have materialized with a L28 and FI. These are logbooked PRC and allowed as model run-ons. To go on & try to dechiper anymore would be a minefield! Thanks again to all posters....

Yes, it has. Thanks to all replys, I'm sure the detailed list that Alan has provided will be studied by all folloowers of zedology. MOM

Just to clarify the question. The model is similar to the HLS-30 with the 280 engine. It would be considered as a model run-on as the body is identical to the S-30, however fitted with a L28. Was this available as a JDM? If so, what was it's model designation? Not the next model that we know in OZ as the ZX.

Well, that was the question I asked and got the reply that added to the confusion! MOM

Ah, see your confused now as well. Back to the start of the thread please.... Carl Beck quoted: As far as I am aware the Datsun 280Z was sold only in North America. HLS30 is the coupe and GHLS30 is the 2+2. Why Nissan retained the "H" to designate the L28 after using it to designate the L24 earlier, then using the "R" to designate the L26 - only they know for sure. Alan T quoted: Japanese market S130-series models never got the 'X' suffix on their names. Here are the L28-engined models: But these are the same cars, with different model designations, yes? The ad Alan attached shows a 280Z being sold in as a JDM product does it not or have I confused myself?????

Thank you ,thank you, thank you. This is what I was after. Curious that the "1" designation was added to the RHD version whilst it was purely HLS30 in the North American market. As Carl mentioned only Nissan would know for sure [unless you have any thing to add]! You wouldn't have the model years for those models you listed by any chance, Alan?
  7. Drop the fuel tank, rinse out & check for rust. Seal if need be. Blow out the fuel lines & replace fule filter. The pump (if working) you will hear. I totally agree with Ed's comments. If you would like to know more on flat top carbs, use the search function for in depth research. Good luck and get that 260 going.... MOM

Thanks all for the input, at least we now know the model designations. Alan, I still confused. Are you saying there was[is] a JDM 280Z produced? I remember seeing in Aus a model of 260/280, which didn't look like the ZX. I wonder if this was/is the HS-30 that boyblunda mentioned? It was imported immediately after ceastation of the 260 (1978) and I have only seen it in 2+2 models, some with a targa top. These where referred to as a 280ZX, but I'm now confused. Thanks again for all the input in this obscure thread.
  9. I should have added that it (the problem) was in the advance mechanism and capacitor which I don't think you would have in an 82 turbo....
  10. I had a silimilar problem with a distributer. Not sure if it's the same as yours though.
  11. Zedrally replied to Zedrally's post in a topic in Australia & NZ
Now, just to make it interesting, can you remember if it was RH or LH drive?

Split from Time to buy a Z. Advice Taken <HR style="COLOR: #d1d1e1" SIZE=1><!-- / icon and title --><!-- message -->Advice taken and appreciated Carl - I sometimes struggle with fully understanding the ettiquette on this site but it does not upset me and this (ettiquette) I am sure is best discussed on another thread. Thanks for the additional information with regard to the L28 engine. You are correct in saying that there are many L28's floating around in Zeds in Australia and I would think that old 280ZX vehicles are most likely the source for almost every L28 in an S30 down here - some people wanted the larger capacity engine and others wanted a cheap second hand motor to replace the original tired engine. Other second hand L28's were imported from overseas and sold through wrecking yards and engine reconditioners. The only genuine 280Z's I am aware of in Australia were imported second hand from overseas. <!-- / message --><!-- sig -->__________________ Dave GRS30 016298 260Z 2+2 6/1977 auto gold daily driver GRS30 010961 260Z 2+2 5/1976 manual black driven on fine days GRS30 015336 260Z 2+2 1976? manual possible restoration? Where are they? [really going off topic now] Just asking a question here to expand knowledge,as I've never heard of a 280Z in Aus. There have been a few imports of HLS-30 Shells etc, I can't see the value of importing a RS-30 into Aus. Perhaps they may have made their way via NZ? Cheers MOM <!-- / message --><!-- sig -->__________________ Mike of the Mire 73 240Z Rally 77 260Z Touring Bogged but not beaten <HR style="COLOR: #d1d1e1" SIZE=1><!-- / icon and title --><!-- message -->Perhaps I should have said "heard of" rather than "know of" in my post. I have seen an imported 2+2 that was being dismantled in Perth and was advised by the owner that the doors were different in this car compared to the Australian models due to it being an imported second hand vehicle from Japan. It took the owner a few attempts to allow me to clarify the situation there. I thought the car had an L28 but I cannot swear to that now and even if there was an L28 in the car, it may well have been a substitute engine for the original. There was a period of time in the 80's when importing second hand vehicles to Western Australia and possibly to the rest of Australia from Japan and Singapore was popular and easy to do. The sporty type cars such as the Mazda RX7 were the most popular choice of import as they sold for a better price in Australia. The laws for importing second hand vehicles have changed since. A number of American cars found their way to Western Australia when there was a US naval base at Learmouth. We had several queries for parts for American cars, and I think that included Zed enquiries, from the Learmouth navy population at Perth Shockabsorber Centre who sponsored my rally car at the time. On the WAZ register we had a post about an HLS30 found in the desert. http://wazregister.com/forumframe.php However Mike, I cannot verify the existence of a single genuine 280Z in Australia at this point in time. It would be interesting to hear from others across the continent on this. <!-- / message --><!-- sig -->__________________ Dave GRS30 016298 260Z 2+2 6/1977 auto gold daily driver GRS30 010961 260Z 2+2 5/1976 manual black driven on fine days GRS30 015336 260Z 2+2 1976? manual possible restoration? Yes they did. There is no reason that flat tops shouldn't be changed. I have 2 zeds and each type of carb, so I can speak from experiance. I overhauled the 260 carbs (flat tops) several years ago and they run better than the round tops (which have also been O/H). If you do a search you will find that this topic raises it's head every 3-4 months and the main reason is that the flat top carb is totally mis-understood by many in the zed community. Mainly, I am lead to believe because of their in-ability to adjust the mixture setting (they are factory preset). All other functions amid emmission complications are the same ae round top SU's. Perhaps the many different types of climatic zones in the US is reason enough for them NOT being successful there? Who knows? Who really cares as long as you're happy with the performance of your beast. MOM
  16. You wern't the only one that reported that post. Lock up that forum, it's the only way it isn't going to become useless. Shame on members who shamelessly post to it when with some common sense you can post in the correct forum. Victor, you're doing a great job, we are only trying to make it easier for you. MOM
  17. Zedrally replied to Aussie260z's post in a topic in Engine & Drivetrain
Sure is possible, although you may need to buy a turbo zx to get the motor. Otherwise, you could ring around the usual wreckers.. Good luck..

  19. Zedrally replied to rztmartini's post in a topic in Engine & Drivetrain
Never come across a supercharged version, even the turbo versions floating around are non SU. SU's for some reason don't take to super/turbo charging. Surf over to hybridZ for for info... MOM

I'm amazed at the statements of “wood” , plastic "wood" 7 faux wood finish, fooling some owners. This was a myth that was busted several years ago. It was proved without doubt that the wheel is wood, subjected to a process. The thread from memory was by Kats, older members will remember the thread. As mlc240z stated, search is your friend and will clear up any mis-conceptions about the origin of the wheel...
