Any idea who is actually engineering these?

Hi Alan, Still jet lagged I see.... There was a ex works box that sold here recently. I suspect this gear is needed for it? Pricey, yes which reminds me that I still have to investigate those 3 boxes that I inherited. Where the option boxes a flange fitting or sleeve?

One of our fellow rallyists is searching for a 1st Gear for an option 1 Gearbox. Willing to either buy outright or swap for one from an option 2. I don't have the book with me at present, however I thought all 1st gear ratios where the same in these boxes, with the 2, 3,and 4 beigh the variables? Can someone set me straight on this before I leave for home tonight? MOM

My God, '65 and the 6 oçlock swill...... Oh yes it's quite true at that time era anyway. The swill was the reason for it but I believe it has been shortened and no longer holds the title?

Logical when you explain it as such. However, wasn't the original concept to burn or re-route any emmision buildup back through the intake? Is there a design that allows you to use the larger filters instead of the OEM aircleaner AND allows crankcase emmisions to be introduced back into the carburation system as originally designed?

But what does it actually do?

That dreaded clunk is definately one of the joints on one of the half shafts. It may not be apparent with the wheels on the ground, however most members on this list would be suprised if it was anything else. [possible, but not probable]. Jack up the rear [both wheels] and double check, it should be quite apparent from where the clunk comes from. I think the "leaded" grease you mention is graphite grease.

This may only make sense to us Aussie's, although it may serve as an introduction to potental visitors! WE, the people of a free nation of blokes, sheilas and the occasional wanker. We come from many lands (although a few too many of us come from New Zealand) and although we live in the best country in the world, we reserve the right to bitch and moan about it whenever we bloody like. We are One Nation but we're divided into many States: First, there's Victoria, named after a queen who didn't believe in lesbians. Victoria is the realm of Mossimo turtlenecks, cafe latte,grand-final day and big horse races. Its capital is Melbourne, whose chief marketing pitch is that "it's liveable". At least that's what they think. The rest of us think it is too bloody cold and wet. Next, there's NSW, the realm of pastel shorts, macchiato with sugar, thin books read quickly and millions of dancing queens. Its capital, Sydney, has more queens than any other city in the world and is proud of it. Its mascots are Bondi lifesavers who pull their Speedos up their cracks to keep the left and right sides of their brains separate. Down south we have Tasmania, a state based on the notion that the family that bonks together stays together. In Tassie, everyone gets an extra chromosome at conception. Maps of the State bring smiles to the sternest faces. It holds the world record for a single mass shooting, which the Yanks can't seem to beat no matter how often they try. South Australia is the province of half-decent reds, a festival of foreigners and bizarre axe murders. SA is the state of innovation. Where else can you so effectively reuse country bank vaults and barrels as in Snowtown, just out of Adelaide (also named after a queen). They had the Grand Prix, but lost it when the views of Adelaide sent the Formula One drivers to sleep at the wheel. News presenters have recently been forced to market tourism with the highly persuasive phrase -'Adelaide - it's OK!' Need we say more. Western Australia is too far from anywhere to be relevant. It's main claim to fame is that it doesn't have daylight saving because if it did all the men would get erections on the bus on the way to work. WA was the last state to stop importing convicts and many of them still work there in the government and business. The Northern Territory is the red heart of our land. Outback plains, sheep stations the size of Europe, Kangaroos, Jackaroos, Emus, Uluru and dusty kids with big smiles. It also has the highest beer consumption of anywhere on the planet and its creek beds have the highest aluminium content of anywhere too. Although the Territory is the centre piece of our national culture, few of us live there and the rest prefer to fly over it on our way to Bali. And there's Queensland............While any mention of God seems silly in a document defining a nation of half-arsed sceptics, it is worth noting that God probably made Queensland - it's beautiful one day and perfect the next. Why he filled it with d+ckheads remains a mystery. Oh yes, and there's Canberra. Our nations bush capital. In response to the planned city concept I'll say, 'what the hell were they thinking'. But seriously... The least said the better. We, the citizens of Oz, are united by Highways, whose treacherous twists and turns kill more of us each year than murderers. We are united in our lust for international recognition. Not that we're whingeing; we leave that to our Pommie immigrants. We want to make "no worries mate" our national phrase, "she'll be right mate" our national attitude and "Waltzing Matilda" our national anthem. (So what if it's about a sheep-stealing crim who commits suicide??) We love sport so much our news readers can read the death toll from a sailing race and still tell us who's winning. And we're the best in the world at all the sports that count, like cricket, netball, rugby, AFL, roo-shooting, two-up and horse racing. We also have the biggest rock, the tastiest pies, the blackest aborigines and the worst-dressed Olympians in the known universe. We shoot, we root, we vote. We are girt by sea and pissed by lunchtime. Even though we might seem a racist, closed-minded, sports-obsessed little people, at least we feel better for it. I am, you are, we are Australian.

Alan, I don't want to alter the nature of the thread, however, without discussing ergonomics, simply is there any apprechiable difference in driving the LHD or RHD versions aparty from the obvious. Is there any performance differences such as better handling etc? With our pre-empting you I would think that the RHD version would have to be better balanced and thus a better 'handler' on the road or was there ballast added into the LHD to counteract the im-balance? Keep up the good work, we all look forward to your reports from Japan.

You're up late tonight Alan! Ha... the exhaust, never thought of it being underneath there and being a built in toe warmer for those Northern Climates! Long live the land of Sunshine and perpetual warmth.
  11. I also find it hard to imagine. The only time I've heard of a similar event was in Dirt Rally competition with 510's. There control arms have a habit of breaking and the solution was to replace them with gemini ones. Longer thread and no problem. Which begs the question. Didn't the zed suspension evolve from the 510? If so then the control arms must be of a different design as I've never heard of complete failure as such. On the other hand if the control arm in question was from a 510 then it doesn't surprise me?

Tulip is correct, rosebud would be more descriptive however where is the pic that you uploaded?

Alan, I have to ask the question. Which is better to drive, RHD or LHD. Having only driven RHD zeds I have no idea if they drive better from the left or right as designed? Any others out there that have driven both versions?

Hi Prince, welcome aboard. You might like to contact the Prince Register. Victorian based or at least it was if it's still in existance? Last contact I had was Noel Sinclair [going from memory]. The register was affiliated with the NDSOC. Contact Alan Fides the moderator of OZ regional discussions for more help.

Absolutly fantastic. No one could ever dispute the facts as they have been presented, staright form the head of the design team. Pity though, as we don't have any argument anymore and the thread was slipping into obscurity! How's the definitive book progressing Alan?
  16. DC circuits switch after the load. There is another thread somewhere on this site that explains it, or states it. I think it has a lot to do with the current [amps] that the accessories draw and it is preferable to palce any switching after the load. It has created a lot of confusion at times when looking at car electricals. Maybe someone with a more experiance can help in the thread. HIH

You are aware of the firing order on the dist cap runs anti-clockwise? Just a thought?

Ha, never saw my driving lights mount. Bull Bar was the best description until the scuts went to town on them......... Aside this, it's always been apparent that each state had it's own foiables when it came to speach. Whether it's a schooner, pot or pony it all goes down the same. Cheers and it's your shout. edit: left out "handle", anyone with any more?
  19. Ozlime is correct in his method of running all these elec accessories from the Alternator, the reality of it is that you may quickly run out of space on the terminal. I did as I was running relayed low beam, high beam, 2 sets driving lights all seperatly relayed and fused. It had the potential of becoming a rats nest all to quickly. The solution... Run the heaviest cable you can from the alternator to the starter, then use the starter terminal as a bus for all your accessories. No noticable loss of brightness in the H4 or drivers. It's also preferable if you need to do a quick changeover in a rally due to toasting your altenator!
  20. I believe that there is also a smaller diameter SU that was used in the triple ''S' es. From memory they have a smaller suction chamber and throttle body, and can be confused with 'zed SU's. Anyone with further info?

Use www.qantas.com.au as a gateway. Woollagong [& I don't think thats the right spelling either] is south of Sydney, maybe some locals can chime in now! Enjoy your holiday, I now that you will enjoy it here.

Mick, Try a squirt of WD-40 or CRC. It's worked for me several times.
  23. Before you go to the expense of buting a new switch, try cleaning the contacts with a contact cleaner, you could even give it a squirt of CRC etc. If there has been any buildup there this will loosen it and re-jevinate your switch at the same time.
  24. Pardon my ignorance, but would this also be possible on SU's?

Just in case anyone is interested, here is a photo of the new GTR that will be released in Aus in 4 years time!
