  1. He's actually mentioned in the past that his very first sports car was a Datsun Roadster.
  2. I'm working my way through the hundreds of photos I shot on Saturday. Here's a link to the Flickr photo set that I'm constantly updating: http://www.flickr.com/photos/46331602@N06/sets/72157627650906682/
  3. I talked with the owner of the wire tucked, clean yellow Z for a while when we arrived and later while waiting to leave. My car was the blue one in front of his. If I had known there were some forum members there I would have made more of an effort to track you guys down.
  4. I compared N series to E series and found some differemces which I documented here: http://forums.hybridz.org/index.php/topic/67639-cast-intake-manifold-dimensions-how-big-can-you-go/page__p__635737__hl__%2Bn36+%2Be88__fromsearch__1#entry635737
  5. If it weren't so close to JCCS I might be tempted.
  6. I had the exact same problem. Cured mine by spraying starting fluid into the carbs. That got the engine to run long enough that the fuel pump pulled gas back up to the filter and everything was fine after that.
  7. You are right in being a little suspect, the '82 should have the F54 engine block (dished pistons on turbo, flat top on N/A). Like Travel'n said though, who knows what any number of previous owners or mechanics did. Nothing wrong with an N42 either, but it's anyone's guess what pistons it has. Could even be a JDM replacement.
  8. That was a state by state thing. Only a few actually titled the car based on the year it sold. Most went by model year instead.

Yep, great stuff there. I bought all sorts of parts for my Z when I lived in Tempe and had a BAP nearby. Not many other parts stores automatically know how to order a piston and ring set for an L28 without having to ask "Whaaaa?"

There, finally sorted through my pics from Saturday. About half of them made their way onto my Flickr page. Here's a link: http://www.flickr.com/photos/46331602@N06/sets/72157626529526272/
  11. I actually saw a 240Z this weekend sporting 280Z door panels. It caught me off guard because I hadn't known it was possible.

I for one had a great time. It was nice to talk to people who could understand z-speak. I commented on one of your photos Coopfan, found my engine bay in there. I might upload some of my pictures, but it's going to take me a while. Also, not sure if the turbo'd car technically popped his engine on the dyno, he just blew apart the coolant overflow hose. Kinda felt bad for the guy directly across from me who got a hose-down with hot coolant.
  13. Spent 4 hours changing the oil pan gasket. Woulnd't have taken nearly as long if I didn't have to raise the engine to get my Arizona Z Car aluminum pan out. Well, and if the steel drain plug hadn't seized in the aluminum too...
  14. Hey, if the customer wanted a ZZZAP edition I'm sure the dealer could have probably found him one in their network and hooked him up with it. Or perhaps he'd waited for one so long that the dealer flet sorry for the guy and made him a little plaque for when the car finally arrived. As far as some special order job from the factory? I don't think that would have happened.
  15. Original L24 gasket would have been smaller. I've actually got a NOS one and the fire rings are oval shaped. They measure 89mm one way x 84.5mm the other way.

How about 2bbl downdraft Hitachi setups on inline 6 L motors is that better?

SEM Super White FTW! I painted all of my black (and blue dyed, thanks P.O.) interior panels with the stuff and it's very nearly an exact match to the vinyl. The plastic panels are a mix of repro and originals while the dogleg panels, hatch piece, vinyl kit and headliner / a pillar pieces were ordered new from MSA. The door panels were dyed too (originally butterscotch from a '73). All I need now is white seat upholstery. Here's a picture when I was putting the Z all back together a few months ago. I don't happen to have any others on hand at the moment.

My best guess on the first piece is a heatshield, perhaps from the engine bay.

My solution was always to just wedge a big flat blade screwdriver with the handle on the framerail and the blade on one of the flywheel teeth. I didn't have any air tools at the time. IdahoKidd is right too, it shouldn't just fall right off because there's a small ridge on the flywheel that fits over the back of the crank. Be ready though, just in case.

There was a complete triple SU set for a Z car for sale in Surprise, AZ at the beginning of January. It was on Craigslist.

I did mine with small paint brushes. I just used some little Crayola ones I found around the house. No masking required because if I got some on the emblem face it wiped off very easily with the tip of a finger.

The best way to fix this problem is to first cut out any and all rust. Behind the rusty panels you see on the outside there will most likely be other rusty panels which will need to be cut out as well. Once you've eliminated all of the seriously rusty and thin metal, then you begin to reconstruct all of those areas with new metal. Luckily on the Z cars there are a few patch panels available. I replaced the driver side dogleg on my Z a few years ago (there was about 4 square inches of visible rust damage) and used a Tabco patch panel. I still had to recreate two successive layers behind the dogleg, then hand make the bottom of the inner fender liner / lip (about 6-8 vertical inches had rusted out, the entire lower section). Only after that could I weld on the Tabco panel over my other repairs. You simply don't know how extensive the damage is until all of the rot is out of the way.

I might make it to this one, been wanting to ever since I bought my Z. Now that I painted the car I might actually feel like letting other people see it.
  24. I've driven all sorts of fast machinery. Ferarri 360, Ford GT, BMW M3, M5 & M6, Vettes, Vipers, Mustangs GT-H and GT500, Acura NSXs, Maserati Quatroportes, Mercs of all shapes and sizes, Jags, Bentleys, Porsches of all models and trim levels, etc, etc... Fastest I've ever been in any of them? About 25 mph. I was a valet for a few years.
