Looks marginal to me. Not trying to be mean, imply anything or the likes, but in general I see this a lot..... 'if you don't have the money to fix it right the first time, do you have the money to fix it again?'

I got pulled over in mine while in Nevada in 1986 for going 105 mph. (limit was 55 nationally) I produced my idaho drivers license, oregon registration, washington hunting license and california residence. He just shook his head and wrote me a ticket for "Wasting fuel" that set me back five bucks. Told me if I got pulled over again to show the officer the ticket and I would not be cited again. Those were the days...............

Had one myself. Was always tickled I could out run a 280 between street lights in it. At the time, I thought they looked better than the Z. All rpms and no torque though. Couldn't maintain 5th gear on any kind of an incline. Turning the AC on cost a full gear. Had only driven a 240 once in my life before owning the rx and thought the Z was more of a 'sports car'. Probably can't imagine ever owning another rx though. I don't think the quality of the car was the same although it was 'nicer'. Haven't been around the rx now for 25 years so am out of that circle, but not sure there is the enthusiam and aftermarket stuff for them as there is the Z. Might be. The mind set of the 80's was to drop a v6 buick into them as they were just underpowered. Have a buddy here in town with a 260 and a 1st gen rx. He drives the Z and works on the rx. Not sure even what its purpose is other than to try and make it into something it isn't. I might consider the 84 gsl se with the 13b motor and a turbo if the rest of the car were A+. I would not trade either of my 240's for it however. Mine was an 80 gs with the 12b. Thanks for bringing back the memories though. I remember where I was when I had that car. Was a great time in my life..............

Take the money. Hundreds of those motors out there and almost no one wants a used one. I have at least five in the garage, just can't bring myself to haul them down for scrap

In Idaho, when the state, city, or their agent sell an item that would normally require a title, it comes with paperwork that allows for it to be titled. If a vehicle is impounded by the city and taken to a lot by a tow truck, the tow company, after a specific time, can sell that vehicle with paperwork to get a clear title. I am betting that there isn't a city out there that has its own impound service. Any vehicle, abandoned, seized in a drug bust, what ever, was towed away by a company on the city's behalf. There is a paper trail. The city can't(ok shouldn't be able to) sell something that isn't theirs. I'm thinking you aren't asking the right people the right questions. What department now has the title? That is, when you give the 'city' money, who are you giving it too? I bet you can take a bill of sale and a statement of seizure or abandonment to the DMV and get a clear title. Also here, we can get a conditional title, used for old farm trucks, rat rods, abandoned cars, whatever, where we get a title, have to publish the information for a certain amount of days, and then if it isn't claimed in two years, it is a free and clear title. There is a way to get a title to this car.
  9. mjr, I've got so many projects it ain't funny. Three Z's, the Volvo, which will always be my favorite, a 57 IH 4x4 short box, a 52 Chrysler Windsor, it never ends. The standing joke here is 'can you imagine how much stuff he'd have if he had a bigger shop (60x100) at the moment. This weekend is scheduled for getting the engine and tranny in the 240 so I can get it off the rack. Been up there for two full years now.............
  10. 5 or 6 g? It wouldn't sell for that here running. Couldn't sell mine for a grand. Almost no one wants someone elses project they couldn't finish. It looks like a nice unit. I'd sure give a second thought to getting it fixed. Sounds more like trouble shooting than anything. Run on could be as simple as no gismo (can't think of what it is called -one way switch....)in the wiring at the alternator . Other issues are likely trivial too. You'll hate yourself for ever if you get rid of it. Then again, maybe you've come to the point that it is time.......

Found this in North East Washington. Don't know a thing about it but think that it was once in my home town and for sale here a couple of years ago. Somebody should love it and give it a home. http://spokane.craigslist.org/cto/3487393760.html

I guess my neck is a little redder than most here. I'd own and drive it. Not for that much money though. I get a kick out of the purists, I wonder how many of them would have it in their driveway if it were $5000. Especially if there really are only 3 of them left. And as for the (paraphrased) "you could build a really fast Z for that much money", isn't that the same thing and isn't that what the guy did? I think I detect a little penis envy on this board...........

Curious, have you actually driven the car or just revved the motor while in the driveway? Does it puff when you shift? Does it smoke on deceleration and upon acceleration? What color is the smoke? Does it have any kind of smell/odor? What do the plugs look like after an hour drive? (Pull each on-not just one). Do you have to add engine oil and how often? Have you changed the oil recently? Of course if it isn't a driver some of these you can't determine. Am trying to determine if it is even engine oil that is causing the smoke or just overfuel. If it is black and waters the eyes, its fuel. I'm with the others in that it probably isn't a ring problem. Of course it could be, but.................

In answer to your original question, the engine has about zero value. Scrap at best. Go to a wrecking yard or pick and pull and find a later engine from a zx NA. I've got several good runners and couldn't get $150 for them. Do a little research on it before you get it, but you can get a good runner for $400 or less and that will give you time to save a few bucks to do something more dramatic.
  15. I've seen those hood vents before but unsure where they came from. My turbo Z donor had different but similar ones. Anyone know? And along those lines, the car on Arizona Z has vents in the fenders that I find pretty cool, sort of gils. Anyone know where those came from? Would like to incorporate some of that into my turbo 280 car. Since I have a 240 that is purist approved, I'd like to have my 280 make purists groan
  16. Follow up. Replaced the rod with a new one made from a 5/16 grade 8 bolt. Was nearly an inch longer. Appears to be functioning perfectly.
  17. I've searched some, will search more, but am asking as well. 77 280, had the trans changed from 4 speed to 5 speed. New clutch, pressure plate, and slave. The problem is when the clutch is depressed, the push rod to the fork comes out so far it binds and then often falls out. My guess is that the collar for the throw out bearing is the short one and it should be the long one? Any thoughts, experiences? I really don't want to have it taken apart if it doesn't need to be, but then again.......... Thanks! Leonard

A friend sent me this link. Not my taste in Z's but would certainly park it in my driveway (mostly because there isn't a road in Idaho I cold drive it on) http://www.speedhunters.com/2012/08/liberty-walk-shakotan-s30/
  19. You have to give the guy in Virgina credit for truth in advertising. The pics say all that needs be said, but at least he showed them.

Stunning car! What was the width and offest on the wheels?

Am parting a 77 california emmisions 280. Lots of rust but the computer and wiring is still there, as is running engine and good trans. Am in N.Idaho and parts are in car, but will help a member if someone needs something.
  23. They went together relatively easy. Nothing abnormal. It is the correct part number for my 72 240. Buddies car is a 76 280 and he did mention they were difficult. The body of the rack moves perhaps 1/4+ left and right. Almost as though it doesn't pinch it tight enough. Long ways to go before driving it but not comfortable with it like it is. Not sure if shimming it so it is tighter is the answer or buying rubber ones to replace the poly. I hate little things like this when trying to make progress............. argh! edit info. Car is 72 240, serial 49052. Rack came out of rubber bushings. Have never driven the car and only assume it was correct rack. Bushings are thicker and maybe wider on one side than other. They are marked upper and lower, left and right. Did not grease these during installation.
  24. Put the new poly bushings in the steering rack mounts and the rack itself moves some (too much) when the steering wheel is moved. Asked a buddy about his project and he had the same results. Surely this can't be correct? Anyone have it happen to them? What was the 'fix' Leonard
