Need Series 1 Radio Wiring Pictures
Thanks Ron. Not too concerned about the indicator light if that is all it is. As far as the wires go, It might be easier just to put a new connetor on the end. I have spares of both types if you want one. You would need the SM3 connector and a bullet I think. Maybe that's the opposite of what you need. I'm too tired to go look.! I tested my radio today with the antenna wire hooked up and it works great, auto seeked perfectly and found all 5 strong AM stations in my area. All the lights work and it actually sounds pretty good for a 40 year old radio. Not sure what everybody complains about. I wouldn't be comfortable trading but I may be coming into another one soon (and a complete late series 1 vin 20000 ish) that I will be parting out. Looks pretty complete except the seats are gone. Also was alerted about a 69 in my area. Was told it might be a mid 700 build. You know the story, old guy, parked for years, blah, blah, blah. Will be checking it out soon! John

Need Series 1 Radio Wiring Pictures
That does look easy Ron. I see if I can track down the correct wire colors and give it a go next week maybe. I wonder if I can change the indicator light? Where exactly is that?

I would bet that if you have the LF4 connector (no separate RL wire) you have the red indicator.

Ron, I found the inner silver knobs but not the black knobs. I will keep looking. Even the 73 harness I have has the 3 cavity antenna connector. John

Need Series 1 Radio Wiring Pictures
Ron, I think most are aware that the wiring harnesses differ from early to late and now we know the radio connections do too. I managed to make an adapter with a LF4 conductor and SM3 conductor and a Male Bullet for the RL wire. It works and I now have power to the radio. Need to get the antenna wires sorted out and then I should be able to test. We should add the early/late radio to Mikes spreadsheet. I will see if I have any knobs for your radio. John

Need Series 1 Radio Wiring Pictures
Ron, After checking out my harness it appears that your radio is the correct version for the very early Z cars. My harness has the 4 conductor plug, the radio I purchase has a sm3 connector and a separate RL wire with a bullet connector for the power. Your radio is correct, just to clarify things and my harness was not molested, just a different connector for radio power. John

Before and almost after...
Thanks, I'll take that as a compliment. It was actually taken this morning 8/29/10 at the river in my hometown. I think the sun was coming over the trees behind me and gave it that aged look. If you show up tomorrow you'll get to see it in person. Not as nice in person but it is clean. Yeah, I know. I've been driving it for about a month, figured it was time to start posting some pictures. I've been a little MIA lately. I'm sure others know what I mean. Hard to sit on the couch when you could be driving the Z. Thanks Gary. Nice to hear other Z owners comments. Thanks Joey. That radio looks nice. Just need to get the wiring figured out. Working on that now. Keep the comments coming. Kind of eating it up right now.

Battery Tray Advice
I agree with Dave in that there is more than one way to skin a cat but either method above you choose (tray in or tray out) I would blast it with a medium grit coal slag. You will want to cover everything with a 3-6 mil plastic sheeting and tape off the area so you can see where you are working. I would even go as far as making a tent of sorts to deflect the slag back towards the ground. If you go this route you might not have to remove the tray depending on how small your blasting nozzle is and if you can get it angled underneath the tray. As for the POR, you can apply a second coat as it is tacking off (read the directions) and if you are lucky enough to have it be a hot, humid, sticky day it will dry pretty quickly and you will get the best results. Good luck and don't be a stranger. John

Here are the diagrams I have. I can't for the life of me remember where I found them online but they helped me when trying to decipher my harness connections. Hopefully they will help others. plugs for harness (Small).bmp

The diagram doesn't have the connectors. I do have a multi wire connector diagram that indicates a connector for the radio. It shows the harness connector being a sm3 connector with wbk/w/l for wires. The SM3 connector is the small 3 wire connector and that is what is on my radio. I will make my power connector with that. I still need the antenna connector. John Mike, let me know if you need a connector. I might have another on my harness.

Need Series 1 Radio Wiring Pictures
Ron, Mike and Mitchell, Thanks for the discussion and pictures. Sorry I wasn't able to be involved this evening. Took the youngsters fishing at the lake after work. I really appreciate the details Ron and Mitchell provided. This will help me lots. Ron if you are willing to part with the antenna connector I would love to get it from you but I do need the entire unit. Name your price (within reason ;-) and how I can pay you if you decide to part with it. Otherwise, if they are just blade connections on the switch end and a 4 conductor female on the other end I think I have the parts to make it myself while I search for the original. I have a 73 dash with connectors I can canibalize. I still need to figure out the power side though. I will reread the thread and post my questions. Mitchell: I understand what you are saying. I am just going to hide a mp3 connector in my glove box so I can hook up my player. I actually like AM radio so if I get a decent signal with the radio I should be fine. Thanks, John

Mike, yes, I need the connector you are pointing to and I guess I need to make a male connector for the radio power. Mine is not there but I do have a 73 dash harness that I can cut it from if I knew the wiring layout for it. (top, middle and bottom). I could probably make the antenna whip too if I knew the layout of the wires. John
