  1. That is exactly what I want for this car. It is in too good of condition to do anything other than a concourse restoration. Now, after this one, when I pick up a nice 71 or 72, I will keep the engine and tranny original but after that all bets are off! I think I will keep the Hays ignition until then.
  2. Yeah, mine might be ready by late summer/early fall if I am lucky, just in time for a North Shore trip, aaahhhh..... falling leaves and screaming z's I don't have a distro either. I am actually going to be reverting back to points and condensor from electronic ignition soon. PO made the changes back in 76. I have a post here asking what needs to be done. Many thanks to JimmyZ for all the help! Any good datsun mechanics in this area? I figure while I have the engine out I would have the engine looked at. I am also looking for an E31 head that is service-able. Let me know.
  3. Sorry for the delay in getting back to you guys. I'll be pulling the engine this week as part of my restoration. I should probably line up the parts soon so they dont hold up the project. Jimmy, is there any way of telling if the PO replaced the distributor or just gutted it? Zealous, That would be cool if you could. John
  4. Just noticed how crappy my avatar and sig pics look..... Have to fix that tonight.
  5. We're talking 95 through afton and down to Bailey road I think. Lots of winding roads and blind approaches with a great canopy of trees. If we put a ride together you are always welcome.
  6. Thanks for the input Jimmy. I have attached some pics as you requested. It appears that the "guts" are MIA although much of the wiring as you describe it is intact. In the distributor picture you can see the inside of the distributor, the second shot is of the wiring coming off the coil. The yellow and red wires appear to come off of the harness that is attached to the Hays Ignition. Of the 5 wires that come off the Hays the red and white go to the coil along with a black/white wire from the harness that looks like runs from the radiator. A black wire from the Hays harness runs to the firewall and is the ground and the green wire and yellow wire run to the distibutor. It looks like the wire that runs to the thermostat sender is there but was taped up like they cut a wire off and taped it up. Maybe the old wire that runs to the distro is in there? Under the coil is what looks like a resistor of some sort. It is a ceramic block with connectors on it. A thick black wire goes closest to the firewall and a Green wire goes closest to the radiator. You can see this in the pictures. In the picture of the wiring near the distributor you can see where the Hays harness plugs into the existing distributor harness. It takes the yellow and green wires from the Hays and connects them to the Green and Red going to the distributor. I also unwrapped the tape and found a connector inside. It appears to be black in color but I dont know where it would go. Well, I will go back through your post and see what I missed. I will post back here after I go through your link. Thanks for the help.
  7. Anybody out there that has reverted from electronic ignition? Anybody?

I can take it, my wife has been snickering behind my back since the day I left for California to pick up my car.....
  9. That sounds like fun. I'll try it tomorrow and let you know how it goes. Beats a wire brush any day!
  10. Thanks for the info. Will if you put that thread together I think a lot of people would find it of value. I will be ordering my cd tomorrow. Hopefully I will have it by next week.
  11. I am planning my restore and came across a Hays ignition that was installed in 76 by the PO. What is involved with reverting back to points and condensor? The first pic below is the ignition mounted on the drivers side wheel well. The second picture is of a box on the passenger side wheel well. Every picture I have seen of other series 1 z's dont have this box (relay???). And the third picture is of the fine paint job that was applied over the gold paint by the PO. It just flakes off in some areas. I wish it would all flake off and get me back to the original color. I am trying really hard to get the car back to all original. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks, John
  12. 95 is a cool road to take with any sports car. I have yet to take it with my z but will add that to the list of "must take" rides. On that list is the north shore, WI side of the Mississippi down through prescott, into red wing and down through Lake City and back up through durand WI and 94 back home. that should be about a 3 hour trip. Maybe i'll see you out there. I'll be in the Gold 240.

Wow, who woulda thunk it. So much about hub caps. Well, I guess that means I will be selling a set of "later" series 1 caps and continue my quest for period correct ones. Thanks for input, I am pretty sure a few of us learned something here. John
  14. Thanks for the link Mike. Why isn't anything like this available on ebay? I would think you guys could generate a little revenue by offering it on ebay. Is there a list of active Nissan part numbers out there somewhere? That would be a nice list to have. John

they are stamped "IKI Made In Japan", but it is along the edge near the valve stem opening. I guess it doesn't matter as long as it is period correct. Would I need the larger tabs for a 01/70 Z? (or doesn't it matter)
  16. JohnnyO replied to JohnnyO's post in a topic in Wheels & Brakes
When I first saw the number I thought it might be linked to the VIN. Guess that was totally wrong!
  17. Can someone post the link directly to the cd ordering page? TIA

Did anybody make a spoiler that did NOT overlap the rear quarter panels? I have one that is either missing the "tabs" for each side or was designed just to fit the hatch. I dont think I will be installing it on the 70 but may install it on a 71 or 72 after this one is done. Any help?

Were they using D caps on other vehicles back then?

Mike, Attached is a picture of the edge. You can almost make out the "1042" in the center. Steven, you keep contributing to this board, we'll worry about the math;) Thanks Guys!
  21. Carl, Thanks for the quick reply. I think that I should have been clearer. Where I said "estate" I should have said "executor". The original title (which i have) had the original owners name on it. The title I have to transfer into my name has the executors name on it (it was the original owners nephew). Looks like I am the "third" owner.
  22. I'm in Hudson, only about 20 minutes from CG. Maybe next summer I'll cruise your neighborhood...

Does the number stamped on the inside center of the original "D" caps mean anything identifiable to the car? I just picked up a matched set of 4 with the number "1042" stamped inside of all 4. Thanks for the input. John
  24. As the title says, I need an official ruling. I recently picked up a 70 from the estate of a guy in California. The guy who died was the original owner. After his death all papers for his cars were transferred to his estate executor including the title for the z. I know that "technically" the estate was the second owner but does that really count when bragging about my Z? Thanks for looking! John

Are you planning on parting with it? (hint, hint!) John
