I do not understand car shows...
Since my 71Z is almost done I thought I would enter it in a local car show in Moline, IL. There were over 400 cars entered. A friend told me this was a car club show, and if I wasn't a member don't expect any awards. Since this was my first car show ever i didn't have any high expectations. In the end over 40 awards were handed out. I noticed that there really wasn't any category for foriegn cars anyway. However, as my wife and I sat by our Z car that day, I noticed something kinda funny. Although we were surrounded by old hotrods, 67 Camaros, Mustangs, 57 Chevys, ect..ect...Almost every person that walked past our car would stop and talk to me about it. I even noticed the people on either side of me were acting a little jealous that I was getting so much attention. In fact I found it difficult to get away at times. I think since I'm here in the Mid-west, you just don't see these cars around here. Even with over 400 cars, I had seen everything in the hour or so. It turned out to be a really long day waiting for the awards to be announced. My wife and I agree that we will simply enjoy this car on our own terms, and maybe pop into a car show once in a while if we have nothing better to do that day.

Just installed my new BRE Lemans 15x6 wheels!
I had Goodyear Eagle GT's mounted on them. I was trying to get these Goodyears with white letters. The guys at the tire shop said I could get the white lettered tires. But, when they called in the order they were told none were available. They said they are still made, but they're made in small batches and might be available in a few weeks or six months or who know's. They couldn't give me a definate time frame so I settled for these. Tomorrow morning the front bumper goes on.

71 240Z. Muffler position. Vertical or horizontal?
So here it is. I think eliminating the resonator was a mistake. Since this has an automatic transmission, I think the louder sound, sounds crappy. If this were a manual, it would sound great going through the gears. At least I can always add the resonator. Or maybe a manual transmission....Hmmmmmm.

Custom, from the end of the header to the tailpipe. No resonator, with stainless steel magna flow and single SS tip. I'M ok with the muffler showing, I just wondered if there was a specific reason for hanging the muffler vertical.

71 240Z. Muffler position. Vertical or horizontal?
My Z is going into the muffler shop at 1:30 today. I've noticed most early Z's have the muffler more vertical than horizontal. Is there a reason for that or is it personal preference? I even showed the muffler shop guy some pictures of Z's with the muffler hung vertical and he says that it looks bad. I do prefer to hang it horizontal, but I don't want to find out later that hanging it horizontal creates issues with something else.

71 240Z. Looking for white letter tires.
Yes, I know that I would be filling in existing black lettering. I think I'll try it on a used tire I have laying around and see how it turns out.

71 240Z. Looking for white letter tires.
I've heard of white letter paint. My only issue is, even with a steady hand, will the tires look good, or look like I painted the letters myself. Thanks for the advice. I think I will look for some examples online. This would definately make things less complicated.

71 240Z. Looking for white letter tires.
EXACTLY! A daily driver with some BRE style. I will try to add some recent pics to my gallery tomorrow. It's going together nicely. I took it in yesterday to have a new exhaust from header to tail pipe made. They noticed a small fuel leak at the gas tank near the sending unit. I was sent home. This Tuesday I go back and try again after I think I fixed the problem. It's always something.

71 240Z. Looking for white letter tires.
! This picture of your car is what I have for a desktop on my computer. I designed my car from this pic! Our cars are almost twins with only slight differences. Mine is a bright metallic silver with the BRE spook air dam. I chose to go without spoiler for my own reasons. And soon my new wheels to finish it off. Thanks for the info. I think I will go with the 195 60 15's. I just hope I can find white letter tires.

71 240Z. Looking for white letter tires.
I just ordered a set of BRE Datsun Le Mans-style Wheels from Brock Racing Enterprises. They are the 15x6 with 3mm offset. Since I'm putting my car together in the BRE "style", I would really like the tires to be Goodyears with raised white lettering. I can google images of these tires to find them, but when I try to find them through a distributor in specific sizes, all I can find are black walls only. Also, whats a good size tire for these rims. I'm thinking 205 60r15. BTW, this car is stock. Except for a header and 1" drop Tokiko spring kit. Any suggestions?

71 240Z muffler question.
I'm having a new exhaust system "from header to tailpipe" installed on my Z. I have decided I don't want a resonator and the muffler I want is a SS Magna Flow. My question is do I need a muffler with both openings offset, or one offset and one centered, or both centered. Whats the correct layout of the muffler to ensure a correct fit. Also I will be going with a single tailpipe. Thanks.

71 240Z. Aftermarket power antenna installed. Some pics and a short video.
I bought this power antenna kit at Autozone for 59.95 plus tax. I thought I would try this after reading an earlier post from a member here who used the same kit. As long as you are connecting this to a modern stereo unit with the blue accessory wire, it's not too complicated. I just wonder how long this fine chinese made product will last. Here is a short video of the antenna working. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sG2S0M2hBEM

71 240Z turn signal issues and a few other problems.
Before I sent my Z to the bodyshop I pulled the dashboard to fix some cracks in it. I then re-installed it and replaced all of the gauge bulbs and made sure everything worked before sending it to the shop to get straightened out and painted. The headlights, turnsignals front and rear, marker lights, brake lights, reverse lights, dash lights, hazard lights, running lights, interior lights, EVERYTHING WORKED! Of course I re-removed all exterior lights for the body guy before he got it. Now that I have the car back, I have been re-assembling it. A few days ago I had all of the exterior lights re-installed and working fine. Just last night I noticed the turn signals stop working completely. Also no brake lights and no dash lights "gauges only". Headlights, dim and brite worked fine, hazard lights worked, running lights and marker lights all good. After I read numerous threads on this issue, I did all of the first checks, all fuses new, correct, and tested. All bulbs, and I mean every single one is new. I checked for broken wires in the column and on the signal switch. All good. I read that the hazard switch on these early Z's can cause these issues, so I pulled it and carefully took it apart, cleaned, re-assembled, and now I have brake lights! I also have turn signals....kind of. Now, when the key is in the run position the right green arrow is always on. If I signal left it blinks fast and both green arrows light up and all correct left signal lights flash fast. If I signal right the green arrow flashes at the normal speed and the right side exterior lights flash at normal speed. Also my gauge lights still dont work, and I checked the dimmer dial thing by the way. Could all of these things be related to the hazard switch? And whats with the green arrow staying lit, fast left side, slower right side. Any ideas? Thanks.

My 71 finally back from the body shop!
When I spoke to Peter Brock he told me the best size wheel is the 15x6 with 3mm offset. He said these cars perform best with this size wheel and to stay away from the wide and tall wheels. Wide wheels look cool, but he says they do rob performance. This is based on the fact that I am running a mostly stock drivetrain. I suppose if you have tons of horsepower, then the dynamics change.
