Give it to me straight....How Bad.
240Kconvertible, What kind of spray pot did you get, did you get it off of the internet? I have been thinking I will need something like that. Thanks, Mike

Thanks for sharing. Glad you and your z are okay. As I was reading I kept hoping everything finally turned out all right. Your car reminds me of my first 240 as the color is the same. Mike

Fusible Link Blows Before key turn key
One way to test is to hook a 12 volt light bulb or buzzer in place of where the fusible link is. That way you can disconnect wires until the light/buzzer stops going off, don't have to burn out a fusible link to test. Or, try disconnecting all the ignition switch wires and start with just the 12 volt input to the ignition switch and the 12 volt output as a starting point, maybe verify that much operation with a voltmeter and go from there.

Well I feel like an idiot
Both of my frame rails are pushed up in the middle due to some sort of past high centering though the drivers side is much worse (maybe 1 1/2 inch upwards). As I hammered the floorboard down on the passenger side with a short 2X2 as a drift and a ball peen hammer (ours feels heavier than a standard hammer), I noticed that the frame rail after I targeted it seemed to be pushed down straighter a bit too which was more than I had hoped for. Maybe this will work on the other frame rail that is much worse? Maybe a longer 2X2 and a lightweight sledgehammer would be in order so that I would be swinging outside the car so I don't risk hitting the interior of the car with the hammer? I don't care about the way the floor looks so much but an area in front of the driver's seat is noticeably higher than the rest of the floor under my foot. As I tried to straighten the passenger side frame rail I was careful to hit on either side of the frame rail on the floor as opposed to hitting in the middle of the upward curve that is over the frame rail. Doesn't look to me like it was completely destroyed I think most of it survived. The flames were very brief. Mike- X-Ray view of internal body cavities 240Z
Hi Adam, Two people I know have backed you up on the idea of forget the grease, both have worked with aircraft and have noted grease turns milky white when it absorbs moisture. Getting the POR-15 in the dogleg cavity will require a dauber of some kind and an inspection mirror. I may try home made wax oil afterwards to protect what I can't get with the POR-15. Thanks for the info, Mike- Reading a damaged metal engine bay plate
Bob, I'll be darned I didn't know the VIN was on the firewall, I just went and looked and sure enough it is there and matches the VIN in the other places. This website is a tremendous source of Z information. Thanks, Mike H.- Reading a damaged metal engine bay plate
Sorry, I exceeded the file size limit of 1 MB so it got truncated to a much smaller image. This new picture should have a much higher resolution. It is reversed (mirror image) to make it easier to read the backside. I was wanting to further verify the VIN (it does) and to get the engine number in case that matched (it doesn't). Thanks for the input, I didn't notice the file was too low in resolution. Mike- 1972 240Z RIP (and what to keep)
Greg, Assuming I was in the running for the 240z roof, you may have it before me if you wish. If you can't get it I will take a run at it if it is available to me, I live about 4 hours or so from where it is. Hopefully I can get the side mirror. There is a local guy here who has at least 30 early z parts cars but doesn't advertise them. Perhaps 20 or so are in a barn; the gentleman who has them inherited them. His business name is Idaho Z car and it is in Nampa Idaho. He won't sell to me though. I think I made him mad at me because I wasn't interested in buying an expensive coil upgrade from him. My car is stock right now; even has points, I may put the pertronix back in that was in there when I got the car, that is my idea of a performance upgrade heh heh. Have a great day, Mike- 1972 240Z RIP (and what to keep)
How many hours is the drive from Boise to Moscow as I am in Boise? Are any exterior emblems (where it says DATSUN), drivers door mirror, rear view mirror available? I also have an interest in the roof to get rid of a sunroof, I feel similar to your local person on the work involved, don't know how to cut off a roof (sawzall?). Can the headliner be removed and put back on, I am not sure who might know that though.- Quarter

Hi Gary, I just noticed the quick reply option. I have seen an old VW rabbit that dumps the cowl water into the engine compartment on both sides in front of the floor pans. The z has enough trouble with floor pan rust already though. I will follow your advice on the cowl drains. I plan on using grease on top of some other treatment, ospho and/or rust bullet/ POR-15. Not sure what is best approach for difficult to access areas like air vent in cowl area, hoping long skinny brushes can reach where my fingers can't. Mike- X-Ray view of internal body cavities 240Z
Thanks for the dogleg pictures, they are very good. I may have to make a new hole inside the car to gain fuller access to the dogleg; the porthole there may not provide enough. I pulled the inside finisher back a little and looked with a flashlight through the porthole; no surprise, I can see rust in there. I bought some long skinny brushes at bed and bath that are on steel twisted wire that can be bent into different angles. Good idea on ospho; it would be a good thing for this area. I'd love to get a camera in there with a light on it.- Reading a damaged metal engine bay plate
The metal engine bay plate on my 70 240 was damaged due to what looks like the inspection lamp dragging back and forth across it for years making it difficult to read due to the heavy scratches. I took it off the car and cleaned it up and noticed the VIN was more readable on the back due to the impact apparently from the labeler that Datsun used. Hi, Does anyone know if there is a set of X-Ray type views of various parts of a 240Z or pictures that show these areas with the outer metal surface removed? I am particularly interested in the lower part of the dogleg just in front of the rear wheel and other rust prone areas as I am thinking of packing those areas with chassis grease (poor man's POR-15) to stop it from rusting. I lost my last 240 to rust don't want to lose my current car that way. Thanks! Mike- Picked up a 71 240z
