Message to the GUYS of CZCC
As McLuhan put it so succinctly, "the medium IS the message", although he was referring to television, . None of us are professional writers (i don't think) and yet we are using little two-dimensional squiggles on a screen to try and convey not only our point of view on some subject, but also our emotional state about said subject. Depending on each reader's interpretation, Mikewags statement could be construed as either; factual, ironic, demeaning, insensitive..... Emoticons were invented to help express the writers intent and reduce the possibility that they might be misinterpreted or taken in the wrong context. In fact that's exactly what Mikewags did in this case, and still his intent was mis-interpreted, . Even when dealing with people face-to-face its easy to misread their body language or take things the wrong way. When Im on the Inter-web and Im not sure about the "intent" of something Im reading, I try not to read anymore into it than whats there. If im that concerned about it I will ask the writer for a clarification. This (plus my tinfoil hat) does wonders to ease my sense of paranoia. cheers, p

Half Exhuast
FWIW, on my '83, I have a 3.2.1 header stock to the CAT, then just pipe out to the rear of the car. Didn't plan it that way, but when the old muffler tore off after getting caught on a curb (don't ask) I just added a strraight piece of exhaust pipe until such time as I replace the muffler. Im now having second thoughts about replacing the muffler at all. As it is now, at idle and low rpms, it sounds throaty, but not loud or harsh, and under hard acceleration it sounds ferrari-like, especially at the upper rpms. No bark, no resonance. When the time comes I think I'll run one piece of custom-bent stainless form the CAT back.

Looking for a great color
Everybodies perception of colour differs so radically that it is almost impossible to acurrately describe in words the colour that you are looking for. For what its worth, the following link is to a car under restoration (Greg's car) that definitely falls into the "eye-popping" "arrest me officer" range of orange. If nothing else, it will help you refine the "orange" you're after. cheers p http://picasaweb.google.com/wgmauto

inconsistant missfire?? Help!
From the sounds of things, you're randomly "missing" fire rather than "misfiring", so it sounds more like an electrical issue rather than fuel related. A new fuel filter should confirm that. That being the case, as mentioned in previous posts, the most obvious culprits would be a bad connection(s) or worn distributor.

Custom Taillight panel?
Man. that is some awesome job you're doing on that '76. I've never seen a restoration/modification that complete. Is Greg independantly wealthy, or one of the owners?? Either way, is he looking to adopt??

outer hatch weatherstripping!!
One little additional piece of advive from the "been there, done that" file. It is very easy to inadvertantly "stretch" the weatherstripping as you are installing it as it is somewhat elastic. "Pre-tensioned", the weatherstripping will forever be trying to return to its normal, shorter length, and will eventually pull off.

Video: weekend away with the Z's
Awesome ride. You must have had a blast driving through the twisties. I've always wanted to tour Australia and doing so in a Zed would be the ultimate vacation, but I dont know as I'd ever get used to driving on the "wrong" side of the road. cheers p

starting problems on a 77 280 AT
It's been a few years since I did the swap, so I can't remember which are the relevant wires. I'll definitely be able to check for you by the weekend at the latest. I'll send you a PM if this post isn't still on the board.

The Exhaust Debate
Due to circumstances beyond my control (read...no money) I was forced to improvise when my muffler unexpectantly departed my '83 ZX at speed. In order to prevent exhaust fumes from entering the cabin until I get around to replacing the entire system, I ran a piece of straight pipe where the muffler used to sit. So from the CAT back is just exhaust pipe. The sound is throaty, but not loud at idle and normal acceleration, and has a wonderful V8 growl when you mat it. What it most definitely does not have is that annoying resonnance at certain RPMs that I keep hearing about with some systems. Anybody ever purposely gone that route for their exhaust system?

Searching for original 240Z leather key holder
I never cease to be amazed by the amount of effort our members go into regarding Datsun/Nissan related minutiae. I love these posts, and I hope nobody takes offense, but they remind me a little of that old chestnut about why college politics are so viscious.....because there's so little at stake. . Keep up the good work, I gotta go drive my Z.

Tar undercoating removal
Heat or cold both work, but cold is much cleaner and faster, as I discovered while removing the tar mats in an unheated garage in the winter in Ottawa. Chilled or frozen, the mats shatter quite easily when struck with a hammer and putty knife, and don't leave any residue. Using dry ice in the summer would produce the same results in a more comfortable working environment. Cheers

Just bought Z #3, 1973
Nice catch Bob. Definitely a keeper. Frank. Funny you should mention the tie-down hooks. Up here (Canada), they were thought to be tow hooks. I've never seen a Zed without both front and rears. Was it common practice for dealers in the U.S. to remove them prior to sale?

random stalling
Usual suspect in situations like this; a fuel issue. Debris in the gas tank that randomly blocks the intake tube or a blocked fuel filter are the first things to check. Does it happen only if the engine is hot, or can it happen on start-up? If only when hot, and you've eliminated the filter and crud in the tank as possibilities, then it could be a vapor lock. Not likely the fuel pump if your '72 still uses the mechanical pump. It wouldn't cause random failures like this. Cheers p

Yes. The purpose of the inhibitor switch is to prevent starting unless the car is in neutral (or 'park' for auto trannies). When I swapped out an auto tranny for a manual (which did not have the inhibitor switch) I had to connect the two switch leads before the car would fire. So the default position of the switch is 'open'. It closes, and completes the circuit, when the tranny is in neutral or park. Connect them together, tape them well and it should fire up.

Is this the next Z?
Looks like what the Z could have evolved into had it been a Porsche. Regardless of the year, a 911 is easily identifiable as a 911. IMO, with regards to the Z series, Nissan lost its bearings in 1984 and has never regained them. The 350Z may be a fine car in its own right, however from a styling standpoint, its no successor to the 240.

How much do you know about Datsun coming to America and the story of the 240Z
, no-one is trying to "expunge" or denigrate the Nissan name (at least I'm not). However, the car that I fell asleep lusting over as a teen was a DATSUN 240Z. Whenever possible, after school I'd go to the local DATSUN dealer and literally drool over the objects of my affection. BTW, the other "object of my affection" that I drooled over in those days was a girl named Betty. The fact that her "official" name was Elizabeth doesn't change the fact that to me she was and always will be Betty. Cheers p

How much do you know about Datsun coming to America and the story of the 240Z
Alan, you've just answered your own question. Here in Canada, as well as the U.S. the cars were sold by 'DATSUN' and were and always will be DATSUNs regardless of the parent company's official name back home or the reason why they chose to market their products here under a different name.

Z Car Hell Uncovered
Mystery solved. At least its a relief to know that they won't get crushed (hopefully) anytime soon. thanks Tony. p p.s. Carl. I was speaking metaphorically, . You are right of course. Haven't made beer cans from steel in decades. Shame too, for anyone who remembers how to "blast" beer, . Just my age showing I guess.

Z Car Hell Uncovered
Thats the really scary part. With scrap prices so high more of these salvagable Zs are going to be turned into beer cans. What appear to be just "parts" cars to you, are for those of us in the rust belt, prime restoration projects. Here's hoping somebody can rescue them before they become mince meat. p.

Graduating to a Z...
Welcome aboard. Going from an Esprit to a Z, eh? You're moving up in the world, . I don't know how familiar you are with this site, but it is without doubt, THE best website for all things Z. The forums are great, the resources incomparable, and it never ceases to amaze me the amount of time that members willingly spend to help another members with problems! Look forward to seeing pics of your Z. p
