  1. I know its been a while. Any luck?
  2. I installed the clutch with no problems and it works great, thanks all.
  3. I bought the Exedy based largely on your advice. It should get here in a week or so. I will let you know how it goes.

  5. Update; I replaced the ring gear using an Oxy/Acetylene torch at my buddy's shop and saved myself $45. Here are some YouTube videos I that helped a bunch.. I would suggest you heat it up on blocks like in on the first video. Also, a mechanic told me that you can use a propane torch which I unsuccessfully attempted. It didn't help that the torch wouldn't stay lit. Still, I would suggest you use a Oxy/Acetylene torch. It was much faster and easier. We heated it up and it dropped right on. Just make sure it seats all the way down. Hope that helps anyone planning on doing the same. http://m.youtube.com/#/watch?feature=related&v=yYvGXTDjY4w http://m.youtube.com/#/watch?feature=related&v=_XW1-5mPSsY Good luck and thanks to everyone for your advice. Welcome! Like stated above, Wolf creek. If you search "Mikuni Carb Identifier" on Google you will find a page to ID which Mikuni's you have. I have the same set up.
  8. I found a Clutchmaster Stage 1 on Ebay for $278. I am worried about buying a "cheap" clutch in fear that I will have to replace it later. I honestly value you guy's opinions though. And appreciate all the humor...
  9. Either way, it is simple to check. The electric fuel pump (IF SO EQUIPED) will be mounted in front of the tank. So jack it up and take a peek.
  10. Well, I don't know about diagrams, but My 73 had both.
  11. What clutch would you recommend? Centerforce, ClutchMaster, ACT, ???? I am leaning toward the Centerforce Stage 1. I want it to grip more than stock, but not be tough to drive. It will be used solely on the street, but it does have a somewhat built motor....
  12. Iwill jump in here. I had the same prob. It would run fine if I started it often, but if it sat, it wouldn't start. It turns out it was the electric fuel pump. I would agree. Prob a fuel problem.. First, make sure there's gas in the tank. Sounds dumb, but its easy to miss if you're focused on it being a mechanical problem. Next, Nissan designed the Z with two fuel pumps. An electric pump at the tank and a mechanical pump on the front of the engine (right side). Turn the key to "ON" and make sure the electric pump is running. you should be able to hear it. If not, buy a universal pump from any auto parts house. Just make sure it is for a carb veh and not for fuel injection. (I should also add that you need to make sure that the PSI is correct for your application [i.e. twin S.U. carbs, tripple Mikuni's etc..] There are a lot of threads on here to answer that question for you if you search it). If that's not the prob, remove the fuel line AFTER the mechical pump and turn the engine over. There should be fuel pumping out (be sure to have a container for the fuel to go into. I used a throw away tupperware container). As stated above, you need 3 things for combustion, fuel, air and heat (spark). Hope that helps. Chris
  13. Picked up the ring gear (for a 78 280) and it looks to be identical. I will be putting it on in the next couple days. I will be replacing the clutch also... any advice? Brand etc. On a budget and primarily for street use...
  14. Thanks everyone for your advice... I had it machined today and found the ring gear to a 280 at Autozone for $25. It will be in tomorrow and I will be able to compare them. If that one doesn't work, I will get one from rock auto. Thanks everyone for your advice. I will let you know how it goes.
  15. If I buy a resurfaced one will I need shims?
  16. Yes, occasionally it made noises while starting. Can I take it to a shop to have the ring gear replaced?
  17. Will the flywheel from a 280z / 280ZX work?
  18. @ Olzed: some of the teeth edges are ground off.. @ Wade: Thanks for the input... that's exactly what I wanted to know... I am going to get a resurfaced one.. Chris

I dropped my trans in my 240 to replace the rear main and discovered that my flywheel needs to be replaced. Searching the internet, I have found resurfaced flywheels, factory replacement flywheels and performance flywheels. My question is which one should I buy? The car has a built L26 and a 4 speed which I am thinking on swapping for a 5 speed. Also, what clutch should I use.... the Centerforce clutch i put in years ago still looks good And I need to do this on a limited budget...
  20. Jeff... here are pics of the Rotor and Shaft with #1 @ TDC.
  21. @ Jeff - Will do. I will try to post pics after work today... @ Zed Head - I don't want to take things apart... That's why I am asking you fella's. I believe the carbs are not the problem since I can get it to run right when I remove the Dist. adjustment screw and go past where the screw limits it. As far as using a light on it, It doesn't idle. So i am not sure how to use the light without it idling. Honestly, after your post, I am ready to shoot the darn thing... There are no Z mechanics within reasonable distance of my house or I would just take it to one. Plus, it is now my mission to get this figured out. As I told Jeff, I will post pics of the shaft/rotor later today. Thanks for your input..
