MY MY - it's looking lovely!!! You've pulled ahead of me now! I'm just finalized mine for paint now. I'm waiting for Dupli-color to send me some Blue Metallic so I can add it to the Silver to make a custom Blue-Silver Metallic. I'll be painting the inners later this week and then will shoot the exterior shortly thereafter. Then it'll sit for a long while because I have another couple of project I want to get a move on.... At least I can watch yours go together....and DROOL!!

The welds look OK to me too - it's all in the dressing afterwards. Are you gonna dress them?
  3. The tape is there so you can sand up to it, but if you go over it's OK. It not only gives you a straight edge, but as it protects the area it creates a high spot - the ridge you need. Just got the right fender installed and sprayed the second and (hopefully) final coat of high build on it. Wet sanding and painting the inners this weekend!!
  4. The technique I learned is to tape off above or below the line, then sand with a long board to the tape. On the quarter, because this line ends (almost disappears) at the curve of the rear wheel arch you can really only tape off BELOW the line, then sand from the top, down to it. Once you get a nice straight line, remove the tape and then sand from the bottom up to the line trying not to erase it! On the door you can tape and sand from above and below line, giving you a nice crisp line. Once you're done sanding from both sides and you've remove the tape, just make sure not to erase the line by sanding over it too much. Hope that helps.
  5. Ready for primer - Here's she is with a first application of high-build epoxy: Now i'm sanding....and sanding......should finish sanding the first coat of high build today, then I'll spray a (hopefully) final coat tomorrow. Next weekend a final wetsanding, then (HOPEFULLY) PAINT....
  6. All I have left to do before putting the high-build primer on the 240Z is the doors. There's so much paint on them they needed to be stripped and being large and flat I decided to use the heat gun and scraper. The left door was a replacement and had been painted several times, with several different colors... The right door was painted twice, silver each time: A quick run with 80 on the DA and they should be ready for primer too!

  8. **** I hope it last MUCH longer than 10 years - maybe THAT'S why it's not used in restorations!!! I'll have to research it closely....
  9. Absolutely the way to go. I've used the 3M before in a shop setting, but not in the restoration shop. With everything being clean and a flange as you mentioned, it should be easy peasy!
  10. That actually a GREAT idea! Never thought of it as I always weld everything in, but in this case it's the way to go. I have to add some filler anyways and doing it the way you described would be very little extra! THANKS!!
  11. It was as easy as a couple phone calls.... Just be sure to get the "Euro-Spec" one. The parts (girl...) forst told me it'd be $1100.00 but I was told by a member here (240dkw) he bought one for about $200, so I called his dealership in Calgary, AB and got the right price ($240CDN) and part number. Called back to my dealer in Saskatoon, SK and then they got it right: $240 overnighted from AB, no shipping. It's only wrapped in a thin foam packing but it was perfect.
  12. I finally felt good enough to get off my duff and did some major sanding on the 240 today! The car had been painted twice previously, leaving a LOT of material that was best removed - especially from the cowl grille - so I stripped a few of the parts down to metal with 40 grit on the DA - locked to spin. Luckily, the hood had been replaced at some point and it had NEVER been painted! The underside is actually original paint in very good shape! Unfortunately, the roof had a sunroof cut into it at some point in the cars life and although I don't mind having a sunroof in the car, the roof has lost a lot of strength and some of it's shape. I debated filling the hole with metal but that would take like 30 hours of work - minimum - plus all the hassle of removing and replacing all the interior roof parts. Let me ask - would you?

This really is the fun part. I always drag my butt through the body and prep stages until they're (finally) painted....then I try to take my time detailing and sorting all the parts that are to go back on. This summer is a little piece of hell for me because I have 2 cars in prep/paint stage, but the payoff will come this winter when I'm in your position!
  14. I hung the new fender on the car and found out that a TON of filler had been added to the headlight bucket to get it to line up with the old fender! After removing all the filler, it lined up perfectly: Sometime in it's history, the other side had it's metal HL bucket switched out with a fiberglass one... Lines up well though - Just for fun, I detailed and photographed my other rides today: Shop truck -
  15. Just got my NOS Left Fender. It came to $270, which would have been about the same as Black Dragon ($190) once shipping and duty were factored in.
  16. Nice score if that's what it is! Looking forward to more pics!
  17. Looking good - on your way!

Mine were from Tabco: Welcome to Tabco Looked like this:
  21. In between hours of sanding I take breaks by doing some of the mechanical work. The carbs were in pretty good shape overall. Time to get back at it!
  22. So who got it - are they going to restore it - and are they going to join this forum??!!

That is AWESOME to see how much good, unfilled, metal you have on you car! You should blow that photo up to poster size and frame it for your garage. The race to finish is still on Dan - but you having it at a shop is giving you an edge - although NOW I'm REALLY motivated!!! Think we're still on-target to meet up (with our Zeds) in Lloyd next summer??!
