Removing Emission recirculation, is it worth it?
To remove the nipples in the exhaust manifold you will need a quality 14mm open end/box wrench. I used a reciprocating saw to cut the common rail into sections and then cut them flush at the nipple for easier access. By searching these forums I found the correct sizing and a fantastic place to order the small bolts to plug the holes left in the exhaust manifold and the the holes that will be left in the intake. The whole process is quite easy, maybe a small pain in the back from leaning into the engine bay and reaching into for most of the process :classic: thor

Just bought a 1973 240Z, won't start
To desmog or not to desmog. I am revitalizing a '71 that I would guess had the smog pump belt removed very early in its life. I am desmogging it now. The plumbing of the smog system is is about 20% full of corroded material. On my '71 the emmision stuff was quite simple. A pump that injected fresh air into the ballance tube of the intake and into the exhaust manifold at each port. My system had a leak on the common rail for the exhaust injection which prompted me to go ahead with the desmog project. If there is now visible corrosion or leaks, you aren't forced to remove or repair. I would suggest that if you have the time, ambition and can fight the urge to keep your machine off the road, desmog it. It will tidy up that side of the engine nicely. It may take a little bit of grunt work as the nuts and hose clamps are *stubborn and a *little tough to get at. I also am using a reciprocating saw on the exhaust section to allow a box wrench or socket to loosen the nuts on the exhaust ports. Wall of text to you :classic: thor thor

Reviving after 8 years parked
Initially I was going to get the Z right on the road and slowly revitalize. I have since decided to slow things down and stay off the road until complete. De-smog Cut some new carpets and have edges bound Remove aftermarket radio and speakers Figure out no drivers brakelight No passenger seat belt. Missing lap section from door side Order z-therapy SU DVD thor

Reviving after 8 years parked
Everything is going well. Changed oil and cooling system flushed Cleared rodent nest from air cleaner housing and tail light panel area Added 5 gals of fresh fuel and drained tank *no particles found in drained fuel but did find a couple booger sized flakes in the old fuel filter No driver side brake light Found a portion of the Cali emission rusted clean through. The belt for the pump removed at sometime previous and conveniently stored in the rear area, so I sealed off the carb balancing tube leaving only the brake assist line intact * I would like to refresh the carbs before adding more fresh fuel and firing it up. Should I go as far (or as little) as to clean the carbs while they are in the car before firing or let sleeping dogs lie ? I wished my enthusiasm and excitement could come through in my posts, I am thrilled to have taken on this project as the car is so very clean and the rewards of a dependable and finely engineered car are but a few hours of work away. The under hood utility light needed only a bulb to make me smile everytime i flick that little switch. That light should have a voice emote that says *Congratulations ! You're a winner ! Anyone else in the mass new hampshire area? Happy hump day tomorrow ! thor

Correct Battery ?
HI, does anyone have a part number or brand of the correct battery? Shouldn't it be terminals to the front side of the car with the possitive terminal on the engine side? My battery from auto-zone is terminals to the front with the possitive terminal under the pop-up access panel. thor

On The Road (In Transit)
The Z is finally heading to Mass for some end of the summer and fall fun, after 8 years of storage in Idaho. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the auto-transport persons involved will appreciate, love and care for my little gem. But all I can think of is Ferris Bueller's Day Off, that 1961 Ferrari 250 GT California and those parking garage attendants. AAAAAAAAAGHHHhh!!! Estimated delivery September 2. thor
